2014-2015 University of Texas Southwestern Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
OOS complete 5/13. Should I consider myself 'silently rejected?' Lol
I remember having a friend receive an II in late November/early December. Not the end of the road yet!

How much emphasis do they place on research during the info sessions and interviews?

I know this has already been addressed, but I thought I'd pitch in: they put what I'd consider an "average" amount of emphasis on it. They certainly highlight research opportunities and discuss it, but they don't shove it down your throat. On of my interviewers was a PhD in my area of research, so we certainly discussed it, but only for a small portion of the interview. The other didn't mention it at all.

This might be a silly question, but did they provide free parking for applicants? I got an email saying overflow would be allowed to park in the faculty garage.

Just did UTSW fairly recently, yeah parking is free. Parking at North Campus before the Friday afternoon events was full though, they ended up letting us interviewees park right in front of the buildings.

Interview invite tonight for the 11/8, 11/15, and 11/22 weekends! First interview invite and I'm so excited/nervous!

Stats: GPA- 3.73, MCAT- 33

App transmitted October 9 and I had already submitted my secondary prior to that.

Would love any advice on what kinds of questions to expect and what you all felt went over well!

Thanks in advance and good luck to everyone!!

Sighhh. I guess I was passed over. 3.84/3.76/31, complete 9/15. So disappointed, but I knew I was an underdog here anyway.

I don't think you were necessarily passed over! I was complete in May and didn't hear back until October! You were just complete in mid September so there's still plenty of time to get a II

My II options were 11/15, 11/22, or 12/6 so still a lot of dates left!

My stats are very similar to yours (3.8/3.9/31), and I was complete on the first day it was able to be complete. Still no II for me either.

What other interviews do you have?
I've interviewed at TCOM, which is the only other Texas school that I applied to. I'm a Texas resident, but I applied according to places I would like to live with my family. DFW was the only place in Texas that has a medical school that my wife and I would want to live. I was pleasantly surprised by TCOM though. I wasn't going to apply there at all, but I'm glad I did and I would be happy going to school there.

Yeah, I've only heard from UTHSCSA so far. I applied to TCOM quite late.

If anyone could help with this, I would really appreciate it! So...I'm an OOS applicant and my TMDSAS was transmitted early August, but I haven't heard anything from any of the UT schools I applied too. Out of all of them, UT Southwestern would be my top choice for a number of reasons. Most personal to me is that my significant other is current in grad school in Ft. Worth. We've had to go through five years of long distance already, and although I know we can survive another few years before she can relocate to wherever I end up going to med school, I would be the happiest and luckiest man alive if I could finally end up in the same city as her. Of course I can list other reasons more pertinent to academics, research, clinical opportunities, etc.

With my sappy story out of the way, I'm starting to lose hope that I have any chance to get into UT Southwestern, especially as an OOS applicant. My question is: how can I update the UT schools (in particular Southwestern) with my gap year activities? I would be able to provide an update on my research internship at the NIH as well as a very strong recommendation letter from my PI. Does anyone know if the UT schools are receptive to updates like that? Thanks again for any help!

I don't think they will take another letter of recommendation if you already had 3 on TMDSAS. As for the update, you can email them about it to the admissions email. However, I'm not too sure how receptive they are to updates before an interview. Maybe someone else on here knows about that.

Good luck! I'll be rooting for you!

You can send additional letters to their admissions department. Also, if you call them and talk to them about your situation they will tell you what to do. I haven't received an interview, but they have been very willing to talk to me about any question I have had.

If you applied broadly in Texas, you should get in with those stats. Good luck!
Every school on TMDSAS. I am a nontrad with a kind of weird background, but decent ECs. Social science research, 3rd year teacher, two Bachelor's degrees. My brother and sister are English professors who helped edit my PS. I just hope to get in somewhere!

I'm a non-trad as well. 28 yr old USMC veteran.

Your resume sounds like a good one. I would be surprised if you didn't get in somewhere with that broad of an application.

Thank you! I'll definitely give them a call and see what I can do in my situation.

Is anyone else concerned about going to their interview at UT Southwestern with the cases of Ebola in Dallas? I plan to drive instead of taking a plane. For those who have been, did the Ebola virus come up in the interview at all?

Lol. Texas Health Presbyterian Dallas isn't a hospital that UTSW rotates at. You should be okay. Just watch out for any :barf:

Actually we do rotate there
I was about to say, the MS4 who did my tour mentioned that she had a couple friends who were having to fight their way through news crews to get into the hospital, lol.

Other than that, ebola wasn't mentioned. And no, you honestly shouldn't be worried. It's at a completely different hospital in a different part of town, and as long as you don't touch any bodily fluids while you're there (highly unlikely) you're safe anyways.

Not at my Southwestern interview, but my interviewers had a good time with the joke while I was at UTH. Never expected that kind of banter during an interview, but I guess it goes to show doctors in general have great senses of humor.

YES! Very fortunate for that! I was initially scheduled for 11/15 but found an earlier date just today.
Are we not eligible for prematch if we interview at Texas schools on 11/15? I thought UTSW prematches until December 31st?

Yes, you can still prematch after 11/15. However, the bulk of the prematch offers will probably be handed out on 11/15.

Got my II just a few hours ago!! Trying to decide between the 11/1 interview or the 11/22 interview. Do you think the 3 week difference will have much negative impact?

Edit: the negative impact is referring to the chance to pre match here

I made the ultimate mistake. I copied an essay from another Texas school. In this essay i talked about where i want to practice and how i want to follow my mentor's footsteps as someone who worked at a medical school (he went to a different texas school); i also complemented this other school in the UTSW secondary. UTSW just sent me an interview invitation. Should I go? Do you think they read it? I honestly thought that would've killed my chances, but I am very glad for the opportunity too.

I don't think UTSW really considers the supplement before offering interviews. They probably do after the interview though. I think you should just go.

Yeah, @Earl Simmons is right. My friend got an interview to UTSW without sending in a secondary.

@Earl Simmons and @WhereDaCoffeeAt, thanks a lot for the responses. I will attend the interview anyway. Is it too late to fix this? or can I ask them to allow me to resubmit an updated secondary? I emailed the education coordinator in August about it but he never responded or called me back. Would it be futile to contact the director of admissions to ask if I could resubmit one?

Sorry, I'm not sure I have advice for that situation itself.

Has anyone attended the Friday morning clinical rounds/dinner that night? What are people wearing to these? I know it says slacks and tie and that a jacket is recommended but are people wearing suits still or just the slacks and sportcoat? Thanks!

You definitely should wear your suit to clinical rounds (*everyone* was wearing a suit). Since most people attended both the morning/afternoon sessions on my interview day, we were all still wearing our suits to the dinner. If you were just coming for the afternoon portion, I think it would be fine to wear slacks/shirt. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! I didn't want to be the only one in slacks and a sport coat if everyone else was wearing a suit haha

Nah, you do you. Everyone wrote the same suit for Friday and Saturday, which is kinda a no-no for me personally. I only went to the Friday afternoon bit with a blazer, tie, and slacks (a bit fashion-forward at that), and I didn't feel like I stood out.
