2014-2015 University of Utah Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This makes me just a little bit nervous. At least 3 or 4 schools at which I'm applying have indicated that the applicant volume is larger than expected. This sounds like a tough year to to apply!

they say this every year... anyways, if you are instate you are competing against the instate pool, which likely hasn't grown much...

I think it is always a tough year to apply???

Of course it is. It just seems like many schools expressed that there are more than expected applicants. Since number of spots didn't really go up (Utah being an exception) the numbers would suggest that there might just be a little bit more competition than usually this year.

This and the U changed their in-state definition to include a large applicant pool (people who went to college or high school in Utah). It's not really worth worrying about, but this could definitely account for the increase in applications.

its already been this way....

"Tell us about a difficult or challenging situation that you have encountered and how you dealt with it. In your response, identify both the coping skills that you called upon to resolve the dilemma, and the support person(s) from whom you sought advice."

here is the second essay question:

"At the University of Utah School of Medicine, we are committed to building a superb educational community with students of diverse talents, experiences, and opinions. What would you as an individual bring to our medical school community?"

Character allowance will be 3990 total for two questions.

A limit of 3990 characters.. does that mean we answer both questions in one big essay?
Are you guys splitting it about 2000/2000?

Thank you. I didn't know that. In that case, I doubt the in-state pool will change much.

I haven't received any secondary from Utah and my application was verified Monday from last week. Should I be worried?

No, I know they are making updates to their secondary application portal. Don't worry, it should be on the way. Wait until next Monday and then send them an email. If you're really anxious then email them Friday. In the meantime, work on your essay.

Got it. Thanks for answering!

Anyone received a secondary from here yet?

Does anyone know if the essay question characters are with or without spaces?

I'm pretty sure it's with spaces. And each enter counts as two characters when setting up your paragraphs. So it's usually +4 characters for each paragraph if you don't indent.

well, it has the essays posted in this thread. Limit is 2000 characters per essay. It also requires you to enter all your activities again in the format they like it (ie. list it in the categories they have and make sure you are average or above in 5 of the 7). 30 days deadline to finish it.

I am also hung up a little on their course requirement, namely the "Diversity" requirement. I must have missed that before. It says you need one course which
"must focus on the culture or current circumstance of a non-dominant population group in the United States; e.g. Ethnic Minorities in the United States, Introduction to Gender Studies, Gender and Social Change, Racial and Ethnic Politics, etc." I honestly can't think of any courses I have that fit the bill. I've taken plenty of language and humanities courses, but nothing about a minority population and their status in the United States...

If you look at their FAQs, you'll see that they invite you to email them to ask if certain courses qualify to fulfill that requirement. I am using a Latin American studies course: SPAN 355 at BYU.

Alright, thanks! Yeah, I was thinking of possibly using a Chinese course I took at BYU. Well, we'll see what they say.

Really? Most interesting... okay Utah, I'm all caught up now. Hit me with the secondary!

Besides the two main essays, there is a re-applicant essay (2000 characters) and also a "explain the learning pursuits in which you will be involved" essay if you are not taking classes this coming year (2000 characters).

So, they rejected my proposed class for the diversity requirement. Looks like I'm registering for another class!

Do you mind posting the instructions for entering extracurricular activities?

No problem. It has a space to enter activities for each of the 5 categories: Service, Leadership, Research, Shadowing, Patient exposure. For each, you need to enter activities, but only as far back as 2011, anything earlier won't count. You need to include hours and/or duration for each. For example, you need to include the # of hours for each physician you shadowed, how long your leadership experiences lasted, how long you did research for.
For Service, Leadership and Service categories you have 300 characters to describe each experience. For research and shadowing you only have 100 characters; for the research you just need to write the hypothesis for the research and for shadowing you just need to write the specialty of the doctor.

Thank you! So are we expected to used the same descriptions from AMCAS or what?

how did you find out that they wouldn't accept your proposed course? did you just give them a call?

Absolutely! It will probably be the personal route because it's more compelling shows who I am much better. How many characters will the limit be?

Does anyone know yet the character limit for the secondary essay questions?

I was beginning to think that they were just doubting my ability to follow directions properly... So, I've received four so far. Let's see who can get the most from them!
