MD only, they are on my md apps if you're interested. How would you compare the MCW interview with the Utah "gauntlet" interview?

Congrats on your interviews, I have one at SLU, Creighton and VCU but I have yet to hear from a couple that you are interviewing at already, namely Miami and Rosalind Franklin.

You probably haven't gotten an interview yet because you are OOS, have any OOS gotten an II yet? There aren't a ton of spots, but you are pretty competitive.

yes, there have definitely be OOS applicants with II.

There were several OOS'ers at my interview.

same... though i think dr. chan implied there would only be about 40-50 OOS applicants interviewed (and a similar number of Idaho residents)

Yeah, and I was told by a woman in admissions that there are no more than 14 spots in next year's class of OOS students.

correct. my understand is this is fixed by law, or at least the minimum percentage of the class that is IS is fixed by law, and ID contracts a certain number and then they remainder they have decided to allocate towards OOS applicants.

Correct. Because the state legislature allocates state funds to the medical school, 82% (or something close thereto) of the seats are required to be reserved for Utah students. The state of Idaho also contributes some funds to the U's med school to reserve some spots for Idaho applicants, in lieu of the fact that their state doesn't have a medical school.
Approximately 400 interviews will be held for Utah applicants and the other 100 (perhaps a bit less) will be held for the Idaho applicants and the out of state applicants. As has been mentioned, this is the first year where the U isn't simply interviewing all Utah applicants who meet the minimum requirements but is instead being selective about who interviews.

I heard of the OOS interviews about 30 are for Idaho and 70 are for general OOS

I would say this sounds pretty accurate. I know they get roughly 120 to 140ish Idaho applicants in a given year if my memory serves me correct.

What confuses me is that if they are giving more instate interviews (400) out than usual (which in the past seems to be in the 350 range), how can they be more selective in the interview selection process (not simply selecting everyone who is average or above average in 5/7 areas) ?

They are giving out fewer interviews.

Last year they interviewed about 570 applicants, and I think that was about 500 IS. this year they are trying to interview 500 total (~400 IS). Add in any increase in IS applicants (not sure if there is much of one or not)...

82% of seats (100 spots) go to Utah residents. However, Utah has redefined what they consider to be a Utah applicant. "Our new policy states that: [Anyone who has] graduated from a Utah high school, college, or university" is considered for one of those 100 seats. I added the bolding for emphasis. The process is more selective this year, secondary to the fact that there are many more applicants applying this year for the same number of seats that existed last year.

From Univ. Utah Admission's Facebook page:

For 2015, we are increasing the class size to 122. With this increase there will be 14 positions available to non residents, 100 positions for Utah residents or non-residents who graduated from a Utah high school, college, or university. The 8 Idaho positions will remain the same.
  • There will no longer be a restriction on the number of times an applicant can re-apply to our school. In the past, applicants were only allowed to apply 3 consecutive years. We have eliminated this policy which will allow applicants to apply as many times as they would like.
  • Our residency requirements have changed. Applicants no longer need to have Utah ties, be a member of a population group underrepresented in the physician workforce, or apply to the MD/PhD program to be eligible for consideration.
  • Our new policy states:
    • A minimum of 82% of positions (100 spots) are awarded to Utah residents or non-residents who graduated from a Utah high school, college, or university.
    • Eight positions are reserved for Idaho residents.
    • The remaining positions are open to all applicants, including non-residents.
  • Because of the change in residency requirements, we anticipate receiving more applications for the 2015 application cycle. In an effort to expedite the distribution of secondary invitations to our applicants, we will not pre-screen AMCAS applications for eligibility requirements. All applicants will be invited to complete secondary materials. However, only those applicants who meet the minimum of all 7 criteria and are average or above average in 5 will be eligible for further consideration.
  • Historically, we have given applicants 45 days to complete their secondary forms and submit their letters of recommendation. We are changing this to 30 days.
  • With the anticipated growth in our application pool, we will limit the number of interview invitations to approximately 500. This means there could be an advantage in submitting an application earlier in the process. Applicants who meet our admissions criteria but have a weak application may not be offered an interview.
  • For the 2016 application cycle, scores will be accepted from tests taken in 2015, 2014 and 2013. If the test is taken more than once within 3 years of application, the scores from the latest test will be accepted. Example: If the MCAT is taken in 2014 and again in 2015, we will only accept the 2015 scores.

I'm still waiting for a confirmation call but I listed Nov. 10th as my highest priority date. It was the earliest date available.

I was complete on October 8th. I finished my secondary toward the end of August but was waiting on MCAT scores. My MCAT was received by the admissions office on October 8th, which is when I got the official "complete" email.

Thanks, ScentOfPeace. Interviewing is a nerve wracking process and it's great to hear that you had an overall positive experience!

When is everyone predicting the first acceptance will go out? Last year it was in early November.

They are doing so many things differently this year, I don't think it is possible to predict when they'll start. But I must say, early November does sound reasonable.

Yeah, I just got the "hold" email. Does anyone know of holds that turned into II?
What did the email say, just that your app was placed on hold until the committee discussed some more things or...?

"Thank you for applying to the University of Utah School of Medicine for the 2015 application cycle. We have reviewed your application and found that it meets our minimum and average requirements. However, due to the increased number of applications we received this year, we will only be offering interviews to 500 applicants.

Your application is now placed in the "Hold" category. If interview space becomes available, we will contact you to schedule an interview."

So I guess that means that they've handed out 500 interview invites.

Anyone else get an invitation to apply to the MD PhD program? Was it just sent out to everyone? Perhaps they aren't receiving enough applicants for the program.

I got that email. My guess is that it was sent to everyone, but I have a lot of research in my application.

I also got that.. and I thought it was a rejection email..

I got the hold email too. Pretty bummed. Wondering if you others on hold are IS or OOS?

hey guys, been reading for a while now and figured i could join in. OOS applicant. interviewed last week. now the waiting game begins!

My prediction for when II's would start going out (Sept 18 I think) turned out to be later than when they happened (Sept 4 maybe? They were around that time.)
For the first round of acceptance phone calls I predict... October 29. Last year, the first acceptances went out Nov 12.

Welcome! How'd you like Utah?
loved it! I really like the curriculum and a lot of M1s told me how much they enjoy it. They also really promote group learning and that's something very attractive about the school. Who knows though they only accept 14 OOS applicants so it's going to be tough!

Probably a good prediction. I'll go with November 5th. Hopefully we will be one of the lucky ones and hear back relatively soon.

Yeah, it seems like most of the students are really happy here. Good luck though! Hopefully we will be classmates this time next year.

Thank you! Good luck to you as well! Crossing my fingers we'll be in the group that finds out our status before March 15th
