2014-2015 University of Virginia Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey, I had two really quick questions:
1) For current students, is it possible to gain state residency after the first year? If yes, how easy/common is it?
2) Also, is there any OOS that is turning down their state school/a pretty big scholarship to attend UVA? If yes, would you mind letting me know why you made that choice (here or through PM)? I loved UVA but the extra debt keeps lingering in the back of my mind.

Thank you!

I turned down a school that would have been significantly cheaper for UVA because...
1) I felt I would be happier at UVA. The people were happier, the students seemed to have more support, and, as I was considering a traditional curriculum over NexGen, would be spending significantly less time in class. Additionally, the other school was A-F grading compared to pass/fail, and I felt that would be an additional burden off my psyche.
2) I felt the opportunities were better. I firmly believe that any education is what you make of it, but I felt that had I chosen a more competitive field, I would have better connections and opportunities at UVA compared to the other school.
3) UVA does give a significant amount of financial aid, which eased the burden for me some.

I am IS. Hopefully we will! Basically that my application is still being reviewed.
IS URM or ORM? I have a 3.6 sGPA/3.4 cGPA/31 strong ties to VA and this is one of my #1 schools.

Congrats btw

Has anyone received financial aid yet? Or do you know when we can expect to receive it?

I was told hopefully next week. If not next week, definitely before April 30

Has anyone heard back regarding their financial aid package yet?

^ haven't received mine yet.

I know that UVA is P/F but is it a true P/F or are their internal rankings?

got it too. it worked exactly how they said it would. just wondering has anyone heard anything about other scholarships like alumni ones? just wondering if that would have been in the award letter or when they give those out. not that i'm expecting anything but i know they have a few of them.

All my alumni scholarships were included in my award letter, but you can inquire with the financial aid office. They ar generally pretty nice people.

Internal rankings are kept for AOA purposes, but are kept private... No mention of rank in your deans letter nor can you personally inquire.

Do Dean's letters include a quartile rank? I know some schools include "code words" in their Dean's letter, such as "outstanding student" or "exceptional student", which signifies a quartile rank. ("outstanding" means top quartile, etc.) Does UVA do something like this, or is the Dean's letter completely devoid of an indication of rank.

Also, I just wanted to mention that the Financial Aid package, just the need based one, is fantastic here! This place might just be quite a bit cheaper than my home institution, where I have in-state tuition!

As far as I could tell when I read my deans letter, there is no indication of rank on it.

With hesitation, I withdrew from UVA today. I hope my spot goes to someone on here!

Can any current student speak to whether people are able to gain in-state status while studying here? I called the office and they said you can never achieve it as a full-time student

With great reluctance, I have withdrawn my acceptance to UVA. Congratulations to everyone who will be attending this school next year and good luck to everyone still waiting!

Withdrew with a heavy heart today :/ this one was difficult since it was my first acceptance and I loved UVA so much 🙁

Withdrew today. This was an extremely difficult decision. I loved UVA. Good luck to everyone.

All these withdrawals are getting my hopes up. Too bad UVA doesn't usually see much waitlist movement 🙁. Any other waitlisters still holding out for UVA?

I am. I think waitlist movement is incredibly variable, so it isn't unlikely it moves a decent amount this year.

Hi Everybody!

I was wondering if we have a Facebook group or some group for accepted class of 2019. I am going to be moving here from CA in July, and cannot wait to meet you guys. Looking forward to meeting all of you!

Never thought I would ever say these words, but I decided to withdraw. UVA is a wonderful school, but I did not quite feel the fit.

And as for waitlist movement, apparently more students are applying to more schools on average, which could result in more waitlist movement across the board. Food for thought!

A friend of a friend got pulled off the alternate list today, so there's definitely going to be some movement. Good luck yall!

Glad to hear I'll have a fellow West Coaster in the class!

Would you happen to mind sharing if they are Virginia residents or OOS?
+1, I remember reading somewhere that they use the WL to even out the IS/OOS ratio. Wouldn't surprise me if both of these applicants are IS.

For any current UVa med students following this thread, what's your opinion regarding living near campus versus living within driving distance?

Well you don't get parking near med ed as a med student, so I would definitely live walking distance or a short bus ride. They give out parking permits for specific rotations during third year (surgery, etc) where you have to arrive before buses start running, but that's about it. You can purchase a parking pass for the U-hall lot as a med student, but you would have to take a shuttle from this lot to the med school (10-15 min) which makes it fairly impractical for most students.

Thanks for the feedback! 🙂

Does anyone know if the Powerpoint that was presented to us during the interview day is anywhere online? I remember it being very good...and unfortunately they did not give us any supplemental handouts. I know a lot of information is on the website, but I was hoping for a sample first year schedule (it was in the presentation), curriculum map, and some other random stats.

I don't know about the ppt, but I found the following pages.

Anyone looking for housing? 1-bedroom apartment available at Rugby McIntrye - 2nd floor unit with hardwood floors, close to campus! My brother already signed a lease there but just got accepted at his in-state school. MSC will be handling a new lease on this unit. Please contact me for more info.
