Could you tell us when they're scheduling interviews for?

Pretty much. Seemingly very low stress and conversational type interview. Check the SDN feedback, and also pm me if you want more detail I'd just rather not put everything out there. Still kind of anxious until all the papers are signed, the white coat is given and my butt is in the seat come july 2015

edit: expect some questions about your hobbies( came up 2x), what makes you unique, why wayne, be able to answer questions about things in your app. obviously this is all general interview stuff which is why i dont mind sharing. pretty easy going. both my interviewers (two cycles) were very kind and easy to talk to. definitely not the type who grilled me about every low grade or any nonsense like that go into the interview with confidence and good luck

Does anyone know what they mean by "sending a brief note of acceptance" (it's in their official acceptance letter form)? Is it just saying that we are accepting the offer?

Hey guys, does anyone know where I can find the most recent residency match lists for students? I've only seen the 2011 one, but I really want to see more representations of where (in terms of specialties) students are able to match into as that's pretty important for me. Thanks!

I don't have a copy of the most recent match list, but I can definitely tell you based on people I know personally that Wayne State students match into great residencies all over the country. I have one friend who went to Wayne that ended up at Georgetown (ENT) and another friend who went to Wayne that is now at Yale (Rad Onc). Another friend of mine, an MS4, is interviewing for residencies right now, and he just got an interview at Mayo (Radiology).

Thanks JPA! The 2011 list didn't seem to match too many people into OB-GYN or surgery which are two fields I'm really interested in, which is why I'm pretty curious about it!

Last year :
GS: 17
Nsurg: 4
OB: 13
Ortho: 8
ENT: 3
Uro: 4
1 each in Integrated Plastics and Integrated Vascular

Pretty standard percentages, match rates are driven by student interests primarily.

Thank you so much!
No problem. As you look at match lists keep in mind that the matches (specialty and program) are VERY student dependent and not necessarily a representation of the school.

2014 surgery and Ob/gyn match also included: vanderbilt (general), loma linda (ortho), Detroit Medical Center (ob/gyn), DMC (neurosurgery), St. John Hospital (general), Northwestern McGaw/NMH/VA (ob/gyn), DMC (ortho), Texas Southwestern - Dallas (ortho), Christiana Care Delaware (ob/gyn), IUC/Mount Sinai Med Center (general), Grand Rapids Med Ed Partners (general), Henry Ford (prelim / urology), Indiana U (ENT), Beaumont (ob/gyn), DMC (general), Colorado-Denver (ob/gyn), Cleveland Clinic (ob/gyn), Wayne State (ENT), Colorado - Denver (general), UMass (ortho), Grand Rapids (ortho), New York Medical College (ob/gyn), University of Michigan (plastics), Barnes-Jewish Hospital (general), Beaumont (ob/gyn), University of Arizona (urology), SUNY-Brooklyn (general), University of Kentucky (ENT), Henry Ford (general), Beaumont (general), Henry Ford (neurosurgery), Albany Medical Center (ob/gyn), Icahn School of Medicine St. Lukes-Roosevelt (ob/gyn), UC San Diego (ortho), Beaumont (general), Akron Medical Center (urology), Tufts (ob/gyn), DMC (urology), University of Iowa (general), UC San Diego (ortho), University of Pennsylvania (general), Case Western (ob/gyn), Loma Linda (general), St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor (general), Beaumont (general), Henry Ford (neurosurgery), Loma Linda (ob/gyn), Case Western/Metro Health (ob/gyn), University of Michigan (neurosurgery), Baylor (general/academic)

Sorry for the format but that's what i could gather from the match list. I think i missed a few too.

Thank you so much!

I interviewed in 2011 but I changed my interview date to be more convenient to my thanksgiving travel plans. I was living on the east coast at the time, got my interview date for December 10th or so, asked them if i could change to some time closer to the Thanksgiving holiday (when I would be traveling to see my family in Ohio), and they worked with me to schedule me in to an open day on November 18th. This saved me an additional trip so I'm thankful to both the school and my boss for being so accommodating.
Thanks

II today! IS, LM 70+, complete late August, that was definitely worth the wait

II today, IS complete early August. I think they waited just a little to long to send me an invitation, so this one may go to one of you guys.
Mind if I ask for your stats? I was complete around the same time and I'm starting to get worried. I thought I was competitive enough for WSU :/

I am above both of their medians

Thanks to everyone who gave me housing suggestions! Seems like I'm going to end up buying a car, but I guess it's not a huge cost in the long run. After my interview yesterday at MSU CHM I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up at Wayne.

Out of choice? and if so, any significant reasons?

Out of choice? and if so, any significant reasons?
Yes out of choice, although there's always a chance I wouldn't get in. There are a couple reasons:
1. I don't like the split campuses, and the fact the I might have to move after two years.
2. It's more expensive. Years 2 and 3 are 45k instead of 30k because there are 3 semesters instead of 2. I believe it's around 30k all 4 years a Wayne. Plus the average debt at graduation is over 50k higher at MSU if I remember correctly.
3. Clinical experience, it didn't seem like there was much opportunity to work with patients in your first 2 years at MSU
4. General environment, I just felt more at home at Wayne. And this is coming from a MSU undergrad.

I think that for a lot of people it would be a no-brainer between Michigan and Wayne (with people choosing Michigan), but a decent amount of people have selected Wayne over UMich and I think it's always interesting when they do. I think your reasoning to get more experience working with folks with health care disparities is solid rationale that other people have considered. I also think that the volunteer landscape of first and second year is a *huge* draw and will largely be what you make of it. The history behind some of the volunteer programs goes back to work that some of our alums had done back in the 1970s (like Robert Frank, whose name is now on our student run free clinic) that was based on students just going out and doing volunteer work unbeknownst to anyone at the school (shelter outreach, etc). The co-curricular program sprang out of that as a way for students to earn credit for their hours they would spend volunteering anyway. Some students like the co-curricular program, some don't, but even out of those who don't enroll in it there's a solid chunk who do solid and extended volunteer work with different places around the city. I think our volunteer landscape is one of the biggest draws and what makes Wayne unique.

Now that I'm in third year I do have to say that I think Wayne seems to create great doctors. I've been really impressed when I have an alum as an attending/senior resident/junior resident. I observe, for the most part, how well they navigate the doctor/patient relationship and just in general how good they seem to be. Whether it comes out of the curriculum specifically or whether this is just a byproduct of the environment in which we happen to learn, I'm not sure (and at least to me, it doesn't really make any appreciable difference). If health disparities is your thing, you will have a rich and varied pool of mentors from which to select, pick their brains, learn about their frustrations and high points of practicing here in the city. There's opportunities to get pre-clinical experiences as deeply as you are looking for/have time for in every sort of population you'd be interested in working with, and if you are an active and engaged student you will build good relationships with administration and be able to do whatever it is you are looking for. The infrastructure is already built.

No worries regarding your questions/thought process in terms of your med school choice. I don't think you're dissing schools, there are a lot of elements to consider. I did not have a choice when applying to schools but I am very glad that I got accepted here. It's been a great fit for me. Hope something out of what I say helps! Not trying to convince you one way or another, just presenting the experience as I've had it here.

I think it was actually a price break down of 80k more than Wayne…
They are changing the clinical experience part of MSU for next year though, I just don't know how.
I also felt way more at home at Wayne when I interviewed there, although MSU did have a strong family environment-- it was very homogeneous when I interviewed, and I'm not sure how well I'd fit in :/

Also, while we're talking about different medical schools in Michigan, how would someone compare UMich med vs Wayne? During my UMich interview I met someone who told me how he regularly kind of dwelled on the idea of how med school would be different if he hadn't gone to UMich (he was interested in health disparities like me) and had gone to Wayne instead. I know this is comparing a "top 10" med school with Wayne, but I don't really trust these med school rankings that are based on acceptance rates/average MCATs/NIH fundings etc.

Also, another edit, I don't mean to diss any of these schools in the least…they all have some incredible strengths and getting into any of them would be/is a huge honor, I just really appreciate any advice in helping narrow down where to go to med school…I really do want to go some place where I'll be incredibly happy and confident in my decision.

Very Informative post! but i think a better comparison when it comes to clinical exposure and family setting is between UMich and OUWB or between Wayne and OUWB.

Hi all-I'm OOS, received secondary pretty late though I was verified 6/23. I was marked complete on 9/16/14. I've not heard back yet, and am in the range for stats. Anyone have a sense from previous years if Wayne offers II for quite some time still or if time is almost out? I heard the other day that someone said that at this point in the cycle 85% of II have been given out and I'm just curious. Wayne is a top choice for me and I'd love the opportunity to interview there.

Don't let the "85% IIs have been given out" scare you. It may be true for some schools, but it's not a trend. My interview was scheduled 3 weeks in advance, Wayne picks 1/6 of their class each month. Going from that...it seems that they will be interviewing at least into March...and if trends are still correct, they're only scheduling for the end of November right now. Good luck!

My interview was scheduled 3 days in advance; the guy next to me was scheduled one day in advance! And I think 1/6 of the class is filled every decision release.

Does anyone know if II are given by email or snail mail? I called the office a couple days ago and they said a decision has been made on my file and I'll probably be notified in a couple weeks. On SDN I'm hearing that they're only scheduling November interviews so I'm having a neurotic feeling that I got rejected 🙁

My II came via email. Don't worry too much, it's not over yet! 🙂 at my interview they gave us a sheet of admissions release dates that go all the way to March (and on in April if needed).

Gahh, and here I am getting nervous over semantics since they said I'd be notified in a couple weeks instead of sooner. Guess I can't change my decision now anyways!

thanks for the info! really helpful! my interview is this thursday...they originally schedule me for 11/25 but I had a scheduling conflict so i called and they were super nice about rescheduling!

Does anyone know the chances of getting off the alternate list?

I've never had an hour long interview yet. Can people who have already had their interviews chime in on their experience? Anything you thought you could have done better? Anything to watch out for?

Not to scare you, but my interview lasted for an hour and a half. I actually really enjoyed talking with my interviewer. The interviewer took notes on my application, and essentially went through all my activities and asked me questions about them. The flow was very organic and the time honestly flew by. Just remember to smile, know your application well, as well as be able to relay WHY you want to attend WSU SOM. The anticipation of the interview is the worst part: once you are in and chatting away, you will be fine. Best of luck!

do u know what the release date is for november?

Rejected by mail the other day. Aside from emphasizing how they didn't find me competitive, I thought it was nice they offered to discuss what I could do to improve my application.

Good luck to everyone still in the process!

Do they send an e-mail in addition to the regular mail?

Is your username in reference to the candy bar? They're so amazing!

I didn't receive an email about the rejection. No electronic communication from Wayne State at all since they confirmed my primary was received (1st week of Sept.).

Sorry about your rejection, hope you have better luck at other schools! Parks and rec is awesome... too bad it's ending

I have a question for any current med students. How is the rent in midtown and where do most students live? Thanks!

For the first two years, not having a car will be inconvenient at best, miserable and time-consuming at worst. Some of my classmates don't have cars- I don't know how they manage it. You will need a car in years 3-4. The majority of students live in Midtown surrounding campus, or Royal Oak. Hamtramck and Grosse Point also have a decent number of students. All of them except Midtown require a 10-30 minute commute. Within walking distance in midtown, Studio One and University Towers seem to very popular with students. I would also look at the Park Shelton, Ellington lofts, and the Union. Those are the only ones I know of that are a comfortable walk. The farther away you go, the more options you will have. There are also options downtown, but you would probably want a car if you lived there. If you don't prefer city life, Royal Oak may be the most comfortable for you-it has a very suburban atmosphere there.

As far as cost, it varies a lot. I think University Towers is like ~$350/month/person with multiple roommates (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Some of the studios and single apartments throughout downtown/midtown run as high as $1000-1200/month. Most of the people I've talked to in Midtown (myself included) are in the $500-700/month/person range.

Does anyone know what the acceptance deposit is to hold your spot? I'll be hearing from them 11/26 and I want to plan ahead in case I get good news.
