2014-2015 Wayne State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The question of letters of interest/intent or update letters comes up a lot so I asked someone in the admissions office and this is what they said to me. Update letters can help if there's been some sort of major change that wasn't represented on your application when admissions reviewed it. Publication, different position, something along those lines. Letters of interest neither help nor hurt your application for much of the application cycle. However, I was asking for people who were post-interview and who were kind of languishing on the waitlist. Knowing the above, though, I would be surprised if a letter of interest would be all that helpful prior to receiving an interview. An update letter that reflects a significant piece of new information would probably be useful for them to know, however.

EDIT: sorry, didn't read your message that said you got an interview. Congrats! Good luck this cycle!

EDIT #2: The time specifically when letters of interest/intent can help is very late in the cycle (the weeks leading up to first year orientation) when they aren't sure if out of state students in particular will be willing to move at a moment's notice. If you are out of state and find yourself still on the waitlist during that final month, that is the time where a letter of interest will potentially help you the most.

Does anyone know if Wayne is open to pre interview update/interest letters? Submitted my secondary a month ago and haven't heard anything

Has anyone interviewed here yet? I'm curious as to how it was....

Thanks! Gave them a call and they said they accept updates at any point in the cycle. But I got my interview invite before I had a chance to write one up! Any other October 13th interviewers?
Me!

Quite relaxed. A single hour-long interview with an optional lunch and tour (which you would be silly to decline.) I appreciated the efficiency of the affair and left with a very positive impression of the school.

Likewise, having interviewed at other schools though, I would like more info on Wayne State before leaving…I bet if they did "put on more of a show" applicants would leave with an incredibly greater idea on what WSU has to offer because I've heard what students take out of their time here is truly exceptional.

Anyone interviewing on 10/27? If you're flying and need a ride let me know. I'm driving down from the Upper Peninsula and I'll be in the area the weekend before staying with my sister.

Thanks! Are you an M1 at Wayne? How do you like it so far?

I'm M3 at Wayne, have liked it very much. This year has been great so far although I will say there are some things that do not run perfectly. Every year has been better than the last as far as I am concerned. Let me know if you have any questions!

Can you elaborate on things that haven't run perfectly?

I don't think it's any different here than it is anywhere else (from what I can tell talking to other med students). Maybe it's slightly different at smaller schools (easier to schedule 50-100 students rather than 290) but the usual breakdowns in communication occur. Emails about next rotation information going out later than you'd prefer, etc. Doesn't happen all the time but people are busy and breaks in communication happen. I've found everybody -- clerkship directors, administrators, support staff, etc. to be very responsive though so I have no complaints.

I've been complete since 8/17 and still no II. Anyone else in a similar boat?

+1, complete right around then. I'm IS and thought I had a reasonable shot at Wayne.

I remember hyper-analyzing all of the stats and EC's last year during the application cycle so I thought I'd try to add a little comfort (or anxiety) to the lives of all of the SDNers this year 🙂
  • OOS
  • 26 yrs old. Sort of non trad.
  • 3.8 cGPA 3.9 sGPA
  • 10/10/11 MCAT
  • ~100 shadowing hours (cardiothoracic surgery and interventional radiology)
  • ~ 150 volunteer hours (pediatric oncology floor)
  • "life experience"
  • not a cookie cutter Personal Statement
If I could offer my top two pieces of advice to you...
  1. Just relax. Be yourself. Even though these are very important people (the admissions folks), remember that they are people like you and I. If you have a reason to call the admissions office, just call and talk to them like they are regular people. Because they are. With that said, be courteous and professional. And probably avoid calling them for info that is on their website. Duh.
  2. Show them that you are (hopefully) a compassionate, responsible individual who has some level of social adaptability. Have something to talk about. I guess thats where "life experience" comes in handy.
If you receive a secondary invite, you're doing well. Since Wayne does a thorough pre screen, a high percentage of secondary invite recipients are accepted.

Here is my timeline of events for Wayne (last year):
  • Primary Completed: 9/16/13 (submitted & verified earlier but received MCAT score on 9/16)
  • Secondary Invite: 9/26/13 (by email)
  • Secondary Submitted: 10/13/13 (by email)
  • Secondary Received by Wayne: 10/14/13 (I got an email)
  • Interview Invite: 11/5/13
  • Interview Day:12/2/13
  • Accepted (by email): 12/18/13 (I think they dish out their acceptances in groups; once a month or something)

Same here. I'll have interviewed and probably given a decision at another OOS school before hearing from Wayne :x I figured I'd hear first from them, if anything

Just booked my hotel room for this weekend , super excited to see the school.

Same here :/

EDIT: I've been so anxiously looking over this board that I just replied to your reply of my post . . .

Same here :/

I called them today to check my status. All they said was, "We received your secondary and you'll hear from us in a few weeks." I could not tell if her tone was positive or negative... *sigh*.

Just received the secondary late last week. I know they screen heavily pre-secondary but is it still worth it for an OOS without stellar stats at this point in the cycle?🤔

How long does it typically take to find out if Wayne State is sending you a secondary? I submitted my primary to the school on October 1st, but haven't heard back yet.

Does anyone besides Macropipette have this information?

Mine took 19 days, but I applied to Wayne early. My AMCAS app was verified July 11 and I got my secondary on July 30th.

I submitted my application on 9/4 and got my secondary within a couple days. I completed it ASAP...does anyone know the general turnaround from secondary -> II for Wayne?

I got my II just under a month after submitting the secondary.

Hey, I submitted my secondary within a day of receiving it back in August and received my interview 2 weeks after that.

Hey guys,

I have a question. I know next week (22nd) the first set of acceptances are being released. Does anyone know how many acceptance they give out each round?

I think Wayne aims to fill approx 1/6th or 1/7th of their class on each offer day. They send out offers once a month starting in October till April I believe.

4th year at Wayne here. I'm pretty removed from the application process and will not be able to speak to the finer points of their admissions correspondence, but I can speak about our class demographic and profile, as well as anything else about the school. Godspeed to you all! I have thoroughly enjoyed training here.

Received an interview invite on Friday! My 23rd birthday was Friday! I called my advisor extremely happy, apparently they called her to let her know and she was waiting for me to get the e-mail. She had some clairvoyant thoughts about me calling I guess! 😉

Scheduled for November 18! Then the following week is my second at MSU CHM.

It's going to be a busy two weeks!

Okay. IS. Very Non-trad applicant.
cGPA: 3.42 sGPA: 3.2
28 MCAT
Over 2500 research hours
Decent amount of volunteer hours/clinical exposure.
Several EC's.
Very significant upward trend from freshman year.
Submitted July 7th
Verified late July. Secondary two days after verification. Secondary submitted by early August. Didn't hear a word until this past Friday. Best. Birthday. Gift. EVER!

Keep your hopes up guys!!! 😀

You and I sound very similar in our applications--same MCAT, lots and lots of research, non-trad, instate, etc... but I'm 27, not 23. I'll be interviewing at both MSUCHM and Wayne within the next week and a half. I hope your interviews go well too! 🙂

Did anyone expecting a decision tomorrow get an email saying it will be delayed until next month?

No...and I only interviewed last Monday. When did you interview?

Edit: You interviewed the same day. Did you have a morning or afternoon interview?

Same day in the afternoon. Was looking forward to hearing from Wayne tomorrow

I interviewed early October and didn't receive this email (Canadian applicant btw)

I interviewed in the morning. Maybe they just didn't get to you. If I remember correctly I think they met during our lunch.

Oh wow. Talk about bad timing 🙁

Did anybody that interviewed in the afternoon get this email?

Hey guys,
I am interviewing in november. My interview is in the morning and plan on taking the tour and lunch with the medical students. I was wondering if I take a flight out of DTW at 5:40pm that evening, would that give me enough time to get to the airport?

Plenty of time.
