2014-2015 Wayne State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Recieved email on July 11th confirming my AMCAS, still waiting on a secondary. I am out of "secondary writing mode" but am excited to knock this one outta the park if I receive it. I should probably pre-write but that idea of pre-writing and being rejected pre-secondary would be too awful.

Is there anybody here, whose application was verified late July receive a secondary application invite?

What do you guys mean complete? When you sent your primary or do we have to send in rec letters?

Submitted my secondary today! Last one 🙂 let the waiting game begin lol

I'm OOS, and haven't received the secondary yet. Should I call them and ask for one? (if so, how would I go about doing that?)

For Wayne State students; Wayne is my top choice, but after earning a mere 28 (7ps/11v/10bs) on my MCAT, I am petrified that they wont give me a chance to even submit a secondary. I just got the score back on Aug 12 and was considering retaking but don't know if I'd be ready by the mid/end-september date that they accept scores up until. s3.6/c3.7 (but last 21 credits post-bac science work 3.8 so I'm thinking they will use 3.8 for my sGPA)
Pretty strong healthcare experience/career changer who works at DMC currently, lots of volunteer and leadership activities with strong essays.....Wayne is my top choice and I'm wondering if I even have a chance with that 7 in PS??
Any classmates with similar scores? Or chance that they will look at my app that holistically? =(
Thanks for any input!

I'm not a Wayne student or even a med student so I won't be answering your questions, but I have a question for you. Why is Wayne your top choice?

I am currently a M1 and know of medical students here with MCAT scores in the upper 20's, so I think its safe to say that you won't be counted out just because of a 28. With that said, at any medical school, a lot is based upon the impression your whole application has on the reviewer who is determining whether to send you a secondary/interview, and that can be for better or for worse.

I'm pretty sure not everyone gets a secondary, so I'd just wait patiently.

Thank you for the input glomeruli!

Wayne is a top choice for me because of the clinical rotations in DMCs system; the patient population is not often matched across the country on the basis of lack of primary care and advanced disease states /multiple comorbidities and poor access to/compliance with care. Challenging to say the least 🙂
I also enjoy living and working in the area so that's a large factor. Finally, the clinical faculty I have had the privilege to work with and learn from are fantastic and I'd be honored to get the opportunity to learn from them as a medical student.

As a current third year / second career med school person with a questionable application (low GPA, 30 MCAT) I say go for it. You say your essays are strong (mine were too) .. if Wayne likes your whole app I do not believe your MCAT will be too much of a factor, although through things people tell me you should be prepared to explain yourself in your interview if you get one. You're in state, you work in the area, you love Wayne .. you have a lot going for you. I obviously am offering no guarantees but there are definitely a lot of strong students here who had upper 20s MCAT. I don't think you're far off the mark and if it doesn't work out this year you can consider retaking it (pushing yourself into the 2015 form, though). I'm a big believer in just going balls to the wall with the application thing and not letting your confidence sag if you have to do it over again (I put myself on a three year plan for applying). There's also a ton of reapplicants walking around this place. Apply with that score, give it a few months, if it's not looking good then prepare for a reapp (apply July 1st if it comes to that) and decide if you wanna take it again.

Has anyone been notified yet that they are complete or any idea how long it takes?

Just received a secondary earlier today, anyone know how hard they screen?

Hey congrats on the secondary! Do you mind sharing when your primary was verified and when you applied to Wayne State. I was verified mid June and still haven't received a secondary.

As for the screening, I don't think they have hard cutoffs but they screen on a case by case basis.

Thanks! I was verified in June but added Wayne July 9th, I doubt they're going in order though. Would be interested in seeing the total number of secondaries they send out vs. primary apps they receive.

Just received my secondary to Wayne! Confirmation email from Wayne on 7/22/14.
I also got that confirmation email on 7/22. Hoping I get the secondary soon! I just have a few left before I can nothing but wait..and maybe start sending letters of interest furiously as the months go by 😉

Can anyone post the email address that you received the 'confirmation of primary application submission' email from? I want to make sure it didn't get blocked from my email or something. I know that they might be behind because its such a busy time, but I have not received anything from them and I submitted my primary to them on 8/13.

[email protected]

It takes a while for them to send me that email, I think it was about 2 weeks after verification for me!

Thank you for your interest in Wayne State University School of Medicine. We have received your verified AMCAS application.

We prescreen applications before determining if a Secondary Application will be requested. We will begin to review applications the week of July 28. The review process can take up to 6 weeks. We thank you for your patience at this busy time of year.

You may submit letters of recommendation through AMCAS at any time. We will notify applicants from whom we are requesting a Secondary Application via e-mail.

Just got rejected pre-secondary via snail mail 🙁 Knew it when I saw the small envelope.. ah. Good luck all!

1200 according to last years thread. Don't know how accurate that source is though.

Wow that seems like a very small number, compared to the amount of apps they receive. 5000 apps for 1200 secondaries seems TOO stringent (on par with Vandy secondary rate I guess?).

Still waiting on that secondary invite...got 'em all pre-written and everything =/

just got the rejection via snail mail 🙁

on the bright side, i was too burnt out to prewrite wayne state's secondary hah
