2014-2015 Wayne State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How do you send update letters to Wayne? Is it just through their admissions email posted on their site because I can't find anywhere on their website that says that you can or gives you info on how to do this.

Hey guys,

I'm in a dilemma...I interviewed on Jan. 13 and thought the interview went well. At the end of my interview, the interviewer said something like "I wish it was up to me but it's the committee's decision." I thought this was a nice reassuring statement but my friend also received a similar statement when he interviewed at Jefferson but ended up waitlisted. I was supposed to hear back in January but they emailed me a day before saying that my interviewer couldn't make the meeting and so my application will be reviewed and I will be notified by the February decision date.

Now I'm worried that my interviewer may not remember me as well or his excitement may have dwindled. I didn't even email him a thank you letter (I know stupid of me). So what do you recommend? Should I email him a short thank you email? What can I include in the email? Or should I just sit tight and wait a week? The last stretch of waiting is the toughest..ah!

I think it'd be a little late to send one now and just look like you're doing it to get brownie points.

I know it seems like brownie points...that's why I haven't sent one cuz it may work against me too because it's so late :/

It is what it is at this point, and I wouldn't try to send a note to the interviewer right now. I am sure the interviewers take notes on each applicant, and write down what they consider the selling points for each candidate, so they don't forget anything or confuse two applicants. There really isn't anything you can do right now that would have a good chance of helping your more than it hurts. I wouldn't worry, and hope you get good news!

Hey guys,
Does anyone know when we should send our official documents to get registered (transcript, passport, etc.)?

Anyone else have acceptances to MSUCHM & Wayne and wondering which to choose? Feel free to PM if you feel more comfortable.

been on alternate list since i interviewed in early November... anyone else in my boat and just want to vent? lol

I'm assuming accepted students will get a more in depth email as to the timeline of turning in documentation and making other arrangements as well?

I just took a quick glance through my old emails. Last year's class didn't start getting emails until July and they were reminders about deadlines and specifics about orientation/financial aid/registration. I would be proactive about sending in transcripts and the health form/immunizations- its one last thing you have to worry about and it is a mess if you get to orientation and they don't have something they need.

Anyone interviewing here this coming Monday?

I was placed on the Alternate list on 12/23 and my status was unchanged as of the January notification date. Here's hoping this Wednesday is gonna be a good one 🙂

what kind of car are you bringing to Wayne. I have a BMW X3 and I just wanted some feedback fro current students or Michigan-ers if its safe to drive a BMW around in detroit area.

Why wouldn't it be?

I did my entire UG at Wayne. Yes it is plenty safe to bring a BMW to midtown, as long as you are cautious (don't leave anything valuable in the car or in plain sight) you will be okay.

Did you have significant updates? I am really eager to send them a letter on the off chance that it will get my application another look, but I don't really have much of a significant update....is it worth it to send a short letter of intent/update even if I haven't had an interview invitation?

I guess it depends on what you deem significant. Mine was about new work experience and Dean's list recognition.

Primarily I meant it as a means for me to reiterate my desire to go to school and hopefully serve the community where I've grown up. So I would say it was more of a letter of intent than a hardcore update. I can't say if the letter got my application reevaluated or if they already intended to give me a II, but I like to think being proactive helps.

Best of luck!

got the email saying im still on the alternate list, interviewed back in november -0-

Same 🙂 although now I'll be playing Titanfall guilt free.

ive been playing CS GO recently after playing 1.6 for a while, now getting sick of games and doing netflix marathons
having an acceptance is pretty awesome

Good luck, man! Hope you get off the waitlist! Congrats on EVMS! (I creeped your comments haha) No CS GO for me, only 1.6 🙂 Been playing since it came out. Even played CS before Steam existed haha, back when the introduction of Steam was seen as a bad thing/nuisance.

If you haven't already checked out Marco Polo on Netflix, check it out! It's pretty cool. I'd say it's a 7-8/10 show and has serious potential for Season 2.

Have you already sent an update letter/letter of intention? Maybe before the next decision comes out, you can send one. Congrats on EVMS, dude! You're lucky you got in close to family. I'm from California and I'm Asian so no such luck for me. 🙁

thanks man, yeah california is definitely tough to be "in state" since everyone living there has as much competition as being OOS in other states.

i haven't sent any letters to wayne, since getting accepted i've pretty much become the laziest person in the world and now i realize we've turned this thread into a 1 on 1 convo

sorry all i'm just bored at work

Accepted via email. Is there any deposit forms that I have to send in? Will it come via mail? It seems like a very generic email without my name on it. I hope it isn't some sort of mistake..

Interviewed 12/16, still an alternate.
In state, 3.85, 31.
Maaaaaan.

Alternate. Interviewed 02/02.
OOS (International) with a LizzyM around 70.
Wayne has great clinical opportunities, but I don't think I'm the best fit for this school.

I'm not a student yet (but I hope to be!), however, I've lived in the area my whole life and there's loads to do--especially with the city's recent revival.
The music scene is on point; there are heavy music venues, as well as coffee shops with open mics and electronic music venues all a stone's throw from the college. There is also a bustling artist's community, as well as countless fine arts offerings like the DIA. Between those and the enormous array of restaurants, parks and social clubs around the city, there's plenty to keep you occupied. Plus Royal Oak and Ferndale are both relatively close and offer more fun things to do.

Many people enjoy living in Detroit cuz of the local attractions. Comerica park is within walking distance if you enjoy watching baseball games. COBO hall is also within walking distance (Auto Show, Boat Show, ect.). People talk about local bars/hangout spots in Detroit or other downtown cities (ex. Royal Oak, Ferndale, ect.) which are within 30min drive. Belle Isle is a huge park located on a little island bout 15 min drive away from the school. The Detroit River walk is a cool sight near all the big auto buildings.

As for the school, I think it is a great fit for me because of how relaxed school environment is. Attendance is not required and all the lectures are video/audio recorded which is a huge bonus for people who have those days where they dont want to go to class or for people who go to class but would enjoy having the recording available to them afterwards. There is a ton of research opportunity on campus where you can work with professors in a variety of science fields. This gives you the opportunity to build your CV and network. As for the clinical experience, I have heard that the associated hospitals offer a diversity of cases that you wouldn't be exposed to at many other schools.

I'm accepted and i play CS 1.6..... played in cal main and esea main, send me a pm cs1.6 players

Quick question regarding update letters - how significant of a change should it be?

I have a non-first author manuscript accepted for publication in Nature Communications (not Nature though, how I wish!). If I have an interview in March, is it necessary to send an update now, or just try to slip it in during my interview?

Since you already have an interview scheduled, either way would be fine. Your interviewer may or may not have a chance to read any updates (my interviewer seemed to be reading some things on my application for the first time when we met), but if they do read it ahead of time, they may ask you about it. On the other hand, it would be a very pleasant surprise to pull out of your sleeve if at any point you feel the interview has gone a bit stale/boring. In general, though, my interview was quite fun, so I wouldn't worry about it. 🙂 Also CONGRATS!!

Does anyone know if you're supposed to send something in to accept their acceptance? (lol) Does that information come with the official letter sent to our mailing address? How long do we have to reply, and how do we reply? Is the deposit refundable or nonrefundable? I couldn't find this info on the Accepted Students page on med.wayne.edu

@tl91 @1bls2g you have 3 weeks to respond to your acceptance which will come through snail mail. If you're paranoid of not receiving the letter after around 2 weeks shoot them an email and they'll send you an electronic copy of your acceptance letter which includes instructions to accept. No deposit required 🙂

Thanks! I'm a bit nervous for the interview, but your experience sounds really reassuring so fingers crossed I get a similar experience. Congrats to you on your acceptance!!!

Gracias y de nada. The interview really was a breeze and we mostly talked about things completely unrelated to medicine off my application. Think of all the interesting things on your app and about yourself and be prepared to discuss them! Good luck to you!

Thank you! Oh, and no deposit? WSU really is a very considerate school 🙂

Got an interview with oakland beaumont medical school going to see what they have to offer before I made my decision to stay with Wayne or not.

once we complete our fafsa, when do we hear about financial aid packages?

To all the M2-M4 Med students what is the good and bad about this Wayne Med school?

Good- opportunity for most anything a med student can do, I think a lot of the faculty are pretty great, can see every Lions football game on tv, big class, every 4th year coming back from away rotations raves about our clinical experience compared to other places, only 3-4 required lectures in the 1st 2 years

Bad- reputation not the greatest is some fields, microbiology labs(can be a + too, but I hate that **** ), on campus coffee shop is bigby, traffic

I'll update as I think of more. Ask if you want me to expand/clarify something
