2014-2015 Wayne State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can someone please comment if the following courses are required for applicants in the 2014-2015 cycle? I applied using MSAR where these classes were listed as recommended and not required but "entering class of 2017" is throwing me off since we would technically be the Class of 2019. This is kind of urgent so any help is appreciated!

Recommended Coursework (required for entering class of 2017 and beyond)
Biochemistry
1 semester
Ethics (preferably Medical Ethics) 1 semester
Statistics 1 semester

Clearly means the class which starts in July 2017 since I am class of 2017 and didn't have to take those

There's a shuttle too that is a bit cheaper than a cab!

Did other ppl accepted receive an email for AAMC background check?

How is the food around the school?

Hey I'm just gonna chime in for a sec...

For anyone curious about good food within a few blocks of the school, here are some reasonably affordable options that come to mind:

Question for current students: my boyfriend's mother is getting married the first weekend of this coming October and wants to fly us down for Friday-Sunday. Are there usually classes with required attendance on Fridays? Is it a big deal if you miss them/is there any chance to make them up? If there are required classes, are they in the morning or afternoon/when would they end? I understand there is probably variability between years but any incite would be greatly appreciated, as she is looking to buy tickets ASAP.

You are currently scheduled to have an anatomy lab that afternoon and that is unlikely to change. However, you can probably miss it if you talk to your lab group and Dr Jackson, they are usually pretty understanding. I would wait to buy tickets though.
Follow the link and click on Year 1 Calendar and go to the proper date. http://year1.med.wayne.edu/

I actually think you'd be fine to miss. It does involve communication with Dr. Jackson -- who is the dean you would be going to for excused absences and whatnot -- but provided you conduct yourself professionally and do not make a habit of skipping out of things you should have no problem missing something for a family event. Since the date does not conflict with anything major (exam or whatnot) I don't see why it would be a problem to schedule the flights now. You can talk to Dr. Jackson right when school starts.

It is SO easy! They just want to get to know you, be yourself, know your application.. It's actually kind of fun.

I just wanted to confirm something I read in earlier pages - is it true that post-secondary (pre-interview) rejections come my snail mail and not by email?

So I received notification today that my status didnt change; however, I did hear some very VERY good news! For those of you that I have communicated with, you know I have interviewed a few places and was waitlisted at all of them. Except MSU CHM, I was referred to ABLE which I was very strongly considering. Apparently Wayne has a post-bacc program as well, and every year they choose seven students who don't get into the matriculating class a chance to do the program for guaranteed acceptance into the following years class. Here's the good part, all tuition and books are completely covered, and on top of that they give each of the seven students a stipend to live off of to focus solely on the program and doing well! The department called my pre-med advisor and told her that they were pushing for me to get into one of those spots for this next year if I don't get pulled from the waitlist this year! I was told I just had to maintain a 3.0 GPA (which is not an issue). So no matter what, I have plans now that I can also have in store! 🙂 Not guaranteed yet, but there's a "high possibility" that I will be one of those students! Best news I've heard all year (I'm including the entire application process not just 2015 😛)

Anybody else interviewing on 2/2? Kinda wish I had gotten one date earlier... Less waiting that way.

I'm interviewing that day too! Are you going to the lunch & tour? If so, I'll see you there!

hey guys, im so out of application season right now.

accepted to wayne state a while back, am i supposed to be doing anything right now other than FAFSA? finished my background check a few days ago.

If there are any current M1's out there: do you think it's necessary for incoming students to do a cram review of A&P before classes start this year?

I'm a current M4 and no... dear God no.

Pre-studying has been covered ad infinitum on these boards and the answer that current med students give is universally no. Spend your last true summer of freedom doing something fun, like drinking. Everybody does just fine without any pre-studying.

I just wanted to mention there was a blizzard or so that interrupted interviews yesterday or the day before. Not sure if that will effect later interviews. But thought some might find the news interesting.

I had my interview yesterday. They gave people the option to reschedule if possible, but myself and a few others still interviewed. I'm not sure if the office was able to contact everybody scheduled, but we were told that barring any other snow days the offer date and everything else should remain unchanged.

Do you know the offer/decision release date for February interviewers? I interview the 23rd and was wondering if I would hear a decision in February.

The next date is Feb 25th. Good luck!

Hey guys,

I was accepted a while back but I have just started looking for housing. I think I would like to live on-campus so I could get used to Detroit and then move out in my second year. Can anyone tell me how I can go about applying for on-campus housing?

Thanks!

Just got my packet in the mail 🙂. It says to "please send a brief note of acceptance". What do they mean exactly by that? Just a typed letter that says "I gladly accept my acceptance"? lol

Just got a II! Complete way back in August.

Also got an II today. I was complete in August. MCAT 32-34, cGPA <3.4

However I've already been accepted elsewhere and I will be withdrawing my app. Good luck to whoever gets the spot.
