2014-2015 Wayne State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
On the instructions for accepted applicants page that you get it says you have to send in a transcript upon completion of your last semester and "from all other colleges that you have attended.". Does anybody know if it means colleges you attended after your submitted your amcas application or just all colleges you have ever attended(basically the same thing you did for your amcas application)?

Good- opportunity for most anything a med student can do, I think a lot of the faculty are pretty great, can see every Lions football game on tv, big class, every 4th year coming back from away rotations raves about our clinical experience compared to other places, only 3-4 required lectures in the 1st 2 years

Bad- reputation not the greatest is some fields, microbiology labs(can be a + too, but I hate that **** ), on campus coffee shop is bigby, traffic

I'll update as I think of more. Ask if you want me to expand/clarify something

Can you clarify on which fields don't have good reputations and which do? Also what do you mean by 'campus coffee shop is bigby'

I'll take this part: http://www.biggby.com/
They are all over Metro Detroit. Fun fact, when I was growing up the chain was called Beaner's Coffee, until they were sued because of their offensive name (which I'm sure was not intentional, although they obviously could have done a better job naming their business). They kept the same logo but randomly decided to call it Biggby Coffee.

Biggby is like one of those gas station coffee.

Interesting...Guess I'll buying my own coffee beans and press or something, lol. Damn I'll miss California

Yeah their business sucks and their coffee sucks. Best coffee in Michigan can be had at Zingerman's and Comet Coffee, both of which are in Ann Arbor. I'm not sure how many options you get in Detroit, although fortunately there is a Whole Foods near Wayne's campus which has decent coffee.

Yeah, Biggby is not so great. But if you're picking a medical school based on what chain of coffee shops they have, well... you have bigger problems than you realize.

But Detroit is hardly lacking for good coffee. There's Anthology, Astro, Commonwealth, Roasting Plant, Great Lakes, Stella Good, Urban Bean all within a few minutes of the school (and plenty more that I can't think of off the top of my head). Commonwealth and Great Lakes are within walking distance. There's also a Starbucks just down the street if you're into terrible coffee.

Emergency seems to have a pretty good reputation and word on the street is that the neurosurgery departments reputation isn't what it could be. I think the coffee shop has been pretty well covered

[QUOTE="joker2400, post:

Compare to Oakland medical school Wayne have more opportunities because of the funding they have.

I had copy this from another student in here:

1). Research. For NIH grants: Wayne = $70 million, OUWB = $2 million, CMU = no data. Wayne is also building a new $90 million research facility able to house 500 researchers, which should be complete in 2015.
http://www.freep.com/article/201403...y-Multipurpose-Biomedical-Research-Building

2.) Clinical Experience. First year residents affiliated with the following schools' teaching hospitals: Wayne = 570, OUWB = 104, CMU = 29. I used number of residents to approximate size of departments and hospitals. In other words, a small community hospital may have a dermatologist, but is unlikely to have dermatology residents, and therefore the complexity of the cases they see will be limited. I also used it as a rough measure of the size of the hospital systems. Check out the size of the departments you are interested in below.

Neurosurg at DMC, yes (although there are some guys like Mittal who are very well regarded). Neurosurgery at HFHS is still very strong.

"Strong" in a department also depends on how you define it. Are you talking about academic productivity? Strength of the training program and clinical skills of its graduates? Ability to match into competitive fellowships? Because those are all different things and highly variable within departments depending on the institution. Even Man's Best Hospital with it's ivory tower and USNWR #1 this and #1 that has weaker departments. In surgery for example, there are graduates of extremely prestigious programs who have CVs a mile long who show up on the first day of fellowship and can't operate because they were scrubbed at the ankles behind a fellow or two who was actually doing the case.

There are a lot of subtleties and politics that go into the strength of a department - plus even if you have an idea as to what you want to go into now, most people change at some point, and some vacillate very far from what they thought they were going to do as premeds. So, picking a school based on the strength of their department of ___ is probably not the best strategy. Because what is awesome as a premed might be very, very different when you're doing it for 14 (or 24, if you really hate your life) hours a day. Go with where you feel the best fit is for you in general. The rest will fall into place.

Remember too that you aren't bound to stay at Wayne for residency either.

You make some excellent points. I was referring to Dr Szerlip expressing his belief that Wayne students do not match as well as they should. Also, by reputatio I was referring to the ability of the department to help our students match where they want to.

Another good thing would be the length of our breaks. We get ~6.5 weeks off btween 2ND and 3Rd year which seems pretty good after talking to one of my buddies at adifferent school today. Also our summer break last year was 13 weeks IIRC, giving you plenty of time to do some app building activities and also work in plenty of relaxation

Would you say that is enough time to finish step 1 studying?
I think thats plenty of time considering my friends has a shorter break in their medical schools and used that to study for boards

Haven't used that time for studying yet, but I plan to take 5 weeks to study and a week to relax staying in may. We have many people who do spectacularly in that amount of time or less. The rumor floating around the school is that the average for class of 2016 was 232. I think our curriculum is set up to allow you to build a solid foundation for step which is the most important thing. We have Tuesdays and Thursdays off, except 5 physical diagnosis sessions as scheduled on those days, dec-mar. Giving you plenty of extra time to work in step studying. We also have 2 in house review programs

If you go to Table 2 on "Page 9" (the 11th page of the pdf) you will see that the average Step 1 for U.S. Seniors is 230. When I was touring Wayne State they said the school average was 'definitely higher than the national average' as a strong point for the school, but is 232 really any significant difference from 230? I don't know how scoring works for the exam so I don't know if a 2 point difference is something to rave about. Is WSU better at preparing its students for the step 1 than other schools with "big names" like Stanford, as a random example?

I think having a score above the national average with our sample size is something to brag about.

I am not sure about the bolded as I have no idea what other schools provide for step prep outside of their lecture/lab curriculum. We have the PRIME step prep program which is led by 3rd and 4th years. This program is based off of UWorld and First Aid so the school has provided these for us at no cost the past couple of years. One of the pathology professors leads a lunch-time review course starting in January covering a lot of the more important point for boards using questions from various sources. She also provides a handout which contains selected information that she thinks is important for all of the topics covered.

Interesting, thx

any current med students know when Wayne announces their financial aid awards?

Rejected via snail mail pre-II, post-secondary - I was complete early Aug. No love from my home state.

Been on the waitlist since December, sent a letter of intent and hoping for the best. It's a hometown school for me and I plan to stay in the area if possible so Wayne is definitely my top choice.

My interview experience was probably a unique one, unfortunately not in the good way.... My interviewer fell asleep (almost), multiple times! It got me super nervous about if I was boring him or appearing completely uninteresting, and I ended up saying only half of the stuff I wanted to say..Given all the positive interview feedbacks posted here, I was really looking forward to a nice conversation, but... disappointed. That being said I loved everything else about the school and was super impressed by research opportunities and the school's commitment to the communities. But after my interview I think it will probably take somewhat a miracle for me to get accepted here

Does anyone know when Second Look is? I emailed a week ago, but no response...🙁

Don't feel bad most interviewer are IDIOTS anyway they didn't have enough sleep or had been interviewing lots of students at the same time without any break.

GPA- 2.5 MCAT- 22

I had a really pleasant interview actually. She was attentive and it was more like a conversation than anything. Definitely wouldn't say my interviewer was an idiot by any stretch.
That said, definitely don't feel bad about a shoddy interview man. It happens to everyone and I'm sure with such a rigorous interview schedule they'll take the length and intensity of the procedure into account

Protip: Don't go around saying that the faculty of a medical school who interviewed you are "IDIOTS."

OUWB is right up I-75. Have fun there. Or anywhere other than Wayne, really.

They are IDIOTS just not all of them. All these students took the time and work hard on their essay and then had to fly in for the interview then these IDIOTS interviewer has to fall asleep on the interview.

So...when it comes time for housing, when should OOS students start looking? And where do most OOS students live?

Rent: ~$800/month x 48 months = ~$40,000.

That's if you don't do residency in Detroit. If you plan/hope to, add at least four years worth of rent..

With real estate prices what they are in detroit, you can get a pretty decent place for less than $100k. Of course you want to research and visit the neighborhood first. A roommate paying even $300/month would make the house $14k cheaper over 4 years also.
Not an option for everyone but something to think about.

probably NOW!

DAMN EVERYTHING IS HAPPENING SO FAST!! I CAN'T PROCESS THIS! WERE GONNA BE STARTING CLASSES in 4 MONTHS :boom:

I have a friend who pay 350 per month. rent def isn't $800 in the area

You should start as soon as possible. Most of the convenient locations surrounding campus fill up very quickly and probably have long wait lists already.

How would someone OOS go about trying to find an apartment now? Are there any resources to help make this process easier?

To my knowledge there is no great resource, other current students, to finding housing. OOS have a couple options at finding housing.
1. You can do extensive research online and trust your own judgment- most places will allow you to sign leases online/snail-mail.
2. You can find an IS classmate/roommate that you trust and is willing to look for you.
3. You can come to Detroit and find something (it is extremely difficult to find immediate housing near campus-don't wait until the week of orientation).

If you give some more specifics as to what you are looking for in housing, I am happy to try to point you down the right tract. We have students that live as far as 60 miles outside the city and commute- there are a lot of places in that radius. I know the midtown/downtown area well, some about Royal Oak, and not much about the other suburbs. Let me know if you questions, I'm happy to help. The class of 2019 Facebook page is up now, you might check there too.

Your friend either 1) lives in a less than desirable area/house or 2) has roommates, which I already mentioned. You can't find a nice house in a nice area for $350/month.
My point is also not to quote rent prices. It is to say that you/we will be spending a lot of money on rent, and that housing in the detroit area is relatively cheaper than around the country. Therefore there is a smaller gap between the amount we will pay for rent over 4 year's time and the amount we could pay for a house, making a home purchase a more viable option.
Below is a link to the rates for on-campus housing, in case you haven't seen it.

Owning a house and having it be cheaper than, or even the same as renting is far from a slam dunk. Also, isn't going to be nearly as convenient if you match to a residency program in Texas and can't unload the place. That being said there are some very reasonable nice places in Ferndale and Madison heights if you have the ability to make a down payment and get financed

M3 here.

I was definitely surprised by the rent prices in the immediate area when I moved here. Midtown is crazy, and getting more expensive as they renovate the area. I had to move out of a place because it was increasing to 900 dollars a month (for my share of a 2 bedroom). I moved to a cheaper place but rent has been increasing every year. There's places around that I think you can get 300-400 dollars rent in but I would do massive amounts of research before going in with assumptions.

Also, I second that everyone who is interested in living close to school get on a waitlist NOW. There will be M4s moving out of places, so there's active turnover, but it can take a while to find the right place. What I would recommend is getting on the class of 2015/2016 facebook page for apartment openings and stuff.

Congrats! Go to the Mazurek Medical Education building (you should have the address). Ask the lobby attendant which floor to go to for your interview (2nd or 3rd, I forgot which one). Then walk around and find the admissions office that you were directed to in your email (probably the Office of Diversity and Inclusion or whatever it's called). Have fun! Relax!

Thank you so much. I hope it goes well. Ill report back after it goes down!

The admissions office is right out of the elevator/stairwell through the double doors at the end of the hall. It's easy peasy

If you truly believe that you did not have an acceptable interview, you should consider writing to them and requesting another interview.

It's sad that some people haven't had good experiences. I had a great time in Detroit and my interviewer was incredibly attentive. He had reviewed my file and had a lot of personalized questions for me. I would have liked to speak to a second faculty/clinical interviewer but my tour with the students was also great and I felt very respected. I hope to hear good news in a few weeks, but regardless, I am very happy with the experience.

Thanks, I never thought of requesting another interview. But it has been a while since my interview, so I've probably missed the optimal time to do so. Plus I worry that it would look like I'm trying to blame my interviewer for my blah performance. Tricky situation.

Just had my interview. My interviewer was an angel, he was such a nice guy! However the receptionist told me that my interviewer usually takes the whole hour. He only took about 20-30 min with me. If felt very fast. Im a little worried especially since March 25th is the last scheduled acceptance release date. Can anyone else tell me if their interview was similar to this.

You be fine mine was only 30 min. They just want to get to know your personality

mine was 45 mins and i too was concerned about not hitting that hour when i walked out, but hey i got an acceptance.

having said that, it's very difficult to predict how interviews go. hope for the best!

Haha I wasn't planning on living there but holy hell, cockroaches and bedbugs? Must be a health violation. How can they allow that to happen and still be open for business? Disgusting.
I call them and they said it very safe as long as you don't go out after 7pm. LOL
At least Wayne Medical school will give all students hands on experience with live patient that are shot , stab or beaten to death everyday. But a safe place to live in downtown Detroit ? NO
