2014-2015 Yale University Application Thread

What hospitals do Yale students rotate in?

I would say we do 80% of our rotations at Yale New Haven Hospital. The rest include Bridgeport Hospital (for pediatrics or OB/GYN), St. Raphaels (for internal medicine, OB/GYN), the VA (for surgery, psychiatry, or internal medicine), the Yale-New Haven Psychiatric Hospital and the Connecticut Mental Health Center (both for psychiatry). I have also heard of people doing a rotation at Greenwich Hospital, although that would be unusual. Waterbury Hospital used to be an option for internal medicine although it no longer is since Yale moved its primary care program to St. Raphael's. We also spend time at tons of local community medical practices (in New Haven, Branford, North Haven, Hamden, Stratford, etc.) for the outpatient component of our clerkships.

Did you do any away rotations at other institutions? If so, how do you think they compared to YNHH ?

I haven't done any away rotations so I can't really answer that. I will say that given the sheer size of YNHH (now the 4th largest hospital in the US), you will be exposed to every possible field of medicine you might be interested in. In addition, you will have the opportunity to take care of patients with extremely complex medical and surgical conditions, similar to those that appear as cases in the top medical journals.

Would you mind commenting on the open curriculum at Yale? How has it helped/hurt your experience as a student? Was it different than you expected? Did it take some getting used to? Thanks!

Which one did you get? I've been using the one called Dreamdays. It's really pretty and has (approx) dates for acceptances, second looks, white coat ceremony. Reminding me not to waste the precious days before matriculation.

I got Countdown Widget. It's basically a bare bones widget that puts the number of days left til decision day on my home screen and shows the proportion of days left since the day I started counting down 🙂...I've been thinking of it as kind of ominous actually but I like your take better. These days before matriculation are definitely some precious ones!

Has anyone tried to apply for financial aid yet? What do we put on the Certification of Information form where it asks for Yale ID number?

I tried to access my certification information form just now (because it said to do that before submitting) and I got a 404 Page not found error 🙁

Use IE & Google "Yale School of Medicine financial aid"
Then click on "forms & checklists" in the results.
Then click Financial Aid Application Forms on Yale's website. Then click the "certification of info" and download it. Good luck!

Worked this time! 🙂 Idk why it didn't work directly from the portal... interesting.
So do we send this in along with our tax returns?
*edit* I think I am going to put my AMCAS id in where it asks for the yale ID number!

WOW, I was blown away today (literally too with all the winds 😀). Absolutely loved Yale soooo much and I was also so impressed by how approachable, friendly and awesome the folks here were! Manageable city, amazing opportunities, support bled from every aspect of the school, flexibility... just amazing
@researchismymiddlename , pretty awesome, yes? I know that everyone loved you! Who could help it?

What do you mean by "open curriculum"?

"The Yale system"

Never call The Yale System anything other than The Yale System. Occasionally, we'll permit "The Best System", but that's on a case-by-case basis.

On a more serious note, the curriculum is fantastic. Without the stress of grades, we all have more time to dedicate to whatever we please, whether that be research, extracurriculars, or sleep.

Without competition, we all like each other more. And we're happier.

Students at other schools who are jelly spread rumors that we do poorly on Step 1 or on away rotations as a result of the yale system. This is a rumor. Most years, our step 1 average breaks 240, and getting all honors is more the norm than the exception (no cutoffs!).

Also, our match list craps all over most other schools. In 2014, we had 9 Derm out of 98 that entered the match. Derm + ENT + Plastics + Ortho accounted for more than 1/5 of the people that entered the match. Also, we tend to be "top 10 programs or bust" for residency: UCSF/Stanford/MGH/BWH/NYP/Yale/Hopkins eats up the majority of our graduates.

So, the system works.

Ok, off to get Yale tattooed on my back.

I wish I could like this more than once. Haha Just went from really wanting to go here to definitely going if accepted.

16 days to D day, who's counting

No point in counting if you ask me. Last year decisions went out on March 4th and they were told decisions would come out at a later date, too.

But then that does make it more nerve-racking. For all we know, decisions could come next week

Oh crap. *Gulp* :wideyed::nailbiting::scared:

I agree with this completely. The Yale System made my medical school experience so wonderful, I couldn't imagine life anywhere else. Instead of being stressed out of my mind for 4 years, I loved every minute of it and still managed to kick butt on the boards and do great in all of my clerkships.

We even have enough time to make these really awesome videos (both of which were just presented in the last week):

Have all interview slots been filled at this point? Haven't heard anything since I was complete in Sept...

How selective is the MBA program for current MD students?

Just got off the phone with Fin Aid office (after speaking with the super nice lady who gave us the fin aid session during interview) and learned something that I thought you guys might be interested in knowing as well:

On their website there is a step 4
http://medicine.yale.edu/education/finaid/apply/how_to_apply.aspx

4. 2015-2016 Verification of Income for 2014.

That only means you have to use IRS retrieval tool. It's not a separate form or item. 🙂

Apparently they are still sorting out decisions (as of a couple days ago) so it is unclear if there is going to be an earlier than expected decision release. In any case, good luck everyone!

I would say that medical students are pretty much guaranteed a spot in the MBA program. I have never heard of anyone who applied and was turned down. Some people choose to get their MBAs at other institutions though.

How does Yale send out its decisions again? I can't seem to remember what they told us on interview day.

Thought this was interesting:

2013-2014 Cycle: Decisions on March 4th
2012-2013 Cycle: Decisions on March 12th
2011-2012 Cycle: Decisions on March 13th
2010-2011 Cycle: Decisions on March 11th
2009-2010 Cycle: Decisions on March 15th

So, anyone want to take bets on when we will hear back? I'm thinking March 10th.

I think they said the 10th when I interviewed late January. But here's to hoping they release tomorrow !

I agree with OscarWao. Probably going to be a tuesday. Given that the last three years decisions have come out on tuesdays and with the new multiple decisions deadline i'm banking on tomorrow.

I believe on my interview day they said decisions would be released March 10th.

Man I really hope good news comes from Yale tomorrow. I've been put through the ringer with the Duke admissions office along with about 500 other disgruntled applicants this last week. Would almost certainly go here if accepted.

I believe it was "by" March 10th. Please be March 3rd!

I really hope we hear back tomorrow. Right now I'm trying to decide between UCSF and some others, but If I got accepted to Yale it would just be between UCSF and Yale. I really loved the campus here and all the medical students I met seemed really happy.

Best of luck, everyone. I particularly hope that you, @Willy38, and our other Duke marathoners are the first across the line here.

(Although we have to brace for the possibility that it'll be a lurker with a generic username who has never posted before and only posts once afterward to ask, "Does Yale give any full-tuition merit scholarships?")

I was told it's all need-based.
