2015-2016 Columbia University College of P&S Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just to verify, who hasn't received the Bassett email?

As for those that did, did it include this note?
"Please note: Your application is under active consideration by the Admissions Committee. Changing your program from regular MD to the Columbia-Bassett track will not affect your application to either program."

Columbia is a big reach for me and it was the first secondary I submitted, so it wasn't great. Hopefully I might still get an invite.

Yes -- it says the same. I'm guessing the email is likely going to everyone out of fairness, but maybe not.

Such a crock. Why do you have to play with my emotions like that Columbia...They've sent this email the last two years, unfortunately I don't think it is applicant specific.

I had that. Don't know what it means.
It means what it says? That your application status is unchanged and Columbia was just doing a little advertising? There is nothing to overthink here, guys

I found the email kinda funny. At least they put Bassett in the email title lol

I figured it was a mass email, sent to the trash along with all the other school spam.

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take, but to be honest applying here is more like a half-court shot. If you have limited funds, I'd go for a school that's more of a lay-up or 3-point line shot. But that's just my opinion, and I don't even play basketball.

Everybody wants to be the one making that Carli Lloyd miracle shot, tho!

My LizzyM score is under 65 and I applied here. The catch is that I'm non-trad with some strong ECs and pubs. Waiting to see if Columbia really does a "holistic" evaluation or if that line is purely for show. Will update.
To be fair, if you don't get an II it doesn't necessarily mean that their review isn't holistic. It's a very competitive school and they're looking for the best of the best in all areas.

I didn't get the Bassett email... so not sure if it went out to everyone

Hey everyone,

For those looking to learn more about bassett (no, it's not just a "rural med" program), I really recommend reading some of the student testimonials found here: http://www.columbia-bassett.org/students.php. I'm not in Bassett, but I thought I'd assuage a few misconceptions in case anyone is on the fence about applying.

Misconception 1: Bassett is a Rural Med Program.
False. You do a lot of work in cooperstown, but the emphasis is on physician leadership training, quality improvement, and developing longitudinal relationships with patients.

Misconception 2: Everyone in Bassett does Family Med.
Nope. I know several bassett peeps who wanna do surgery. Again, Basset really is more about leadership training and system's theory and quality improvement than it is a family med thinktank.

Misconception 3: Bassett is, like, totally separate from P&S #outsiders
All basset students take the first 1.5 years of class with "regular" med students. We do all the same things, join all the same clubs, go to all the same bars, live in the same dorm (unless you're too cool for bard, which you're totally not don't even start with me). Basset students may have a few "extra" seminars and requirements on the side, but it's nothing super demanding, and it certainly doesn't pull you away from the rest of the class.

Also if you get into bassett, you get like an annual grant of $30,000. So that's pretty swell.

Again, not in Bassett. Just thought y'all might benefit from some extra info. Enjoy yo' weekend!

GUYS can we stop reporting whether or not we received the Basset email? I feel like there is pretty strong evidence that the email is going out to all applicants. It's an advertisement. Stop reading too much into it.

I, too, got the Bassett email. I was complete early August. I had also visited the Bassett site multiple times a day for around a week or so because I heard they track hits to gauge interest in the program. Lastly, I had organic OJ and a multigrain PBJ for breakfast that morning.

Just OJ? Not orange + peach+ mango juice? Weak, Bassett won't take you. See ya in Carib

I didn't get the Bassett email, but I wouldn't expect to since I already applied to the Bassett program.

Who else applied to Bassett? It's my absolute top choice.

Why did you apply there if I may ask? Sorry if this is a stupid question but why would one want to go rural when you could be at Columbia? (Besides the financial reason)

Edit: also, appreciate the nod to evangelion. Great anime...

Because I'm interested in going into rural medicine after I get my MD, so I want the chance to try it out. But on the other hand, I'm also a city person who has lived in NYC for years (a certain school might be my alma mater...), so the Bassett program is the perfect chance for me to do both and make an informed decision when the time comes. Plus I love the focus on longitudinal clinical experiences.

Eva is my favorite anime. While I was studying for the MCAT, the pun just sort of hit me.

If you can't see how that was funny you're too far gone into neurotic SDN madness to ever understand.

Oh no neuroticism on my part at all. As a matter of fact I'd be shocked (and delighted) if I got an interview here. I just logged on to post my "stats" after getting the e-mail, so I wasn't yet aware of the general consensus. Judging by your post history, though, you seem to be a lot more invested in keeping up with these threads than I am. Makes your statement a little ironic lol. Best of luck to you during the rest of the cycle, though.

Haha ok. Says the person who neurotically reads through another user's comment history. Good luck.

Yeah, case in point, you don't get it lol

(Just to spell it out, we're basically making a joke of the fact that you felt the need to share your complete date after getting an advertisement admissions email. So we assume that you didn't understand it was a generic email and literally means nothing, and that points to neuroticism. So we poked a little fun out of it, no hurt feelings, just a laugh)

Oh loll. I guess I did need it spelled out.

Thank you omg

For those of you who received the Bassett email and are planning on going ahead and writing that essay, do you actually just submit an update with that specific title on the update page? How long are you guys making it, ~250 words?

funny watching the premeds squirm in their pants over an advertisement email sent to everyone. did anyone just get the email telling us to recheck our emails for the original Bassett email? Getting concerned 😉

Anyone who submitted in late July or August get the Bassett Email? Didn't get it but I'm thinking (hoping/praying/crying) it may be sent to applicants in waves

If I'm looking to inform Columbia that I'll be in the area, should I send an email or upload a document to the "Additional Documents" tab on the application portal?
