I'm honestly very calm - actually over the whole thing and if he wants we can continue this over PM because it's probably very annoying for the others to read. You can't expect me to take him seriously after the (albeit brief) exchange that we've had and, quite frankly, calling him out as a troll/clown shouldn't be anything to wave a red flag over.

where do med students go for food? on campus? how is the food? ive eaten at main campus and its not bad. Any good places to eat in wash heights? i got my joint sylvias in harlem, wonder if theres any good hispanic places uptown like that.

Hi, so there are a lot of options if you're living in Bard or nearby. In terms of fast food, there's a 24 hour subway, 24 hour mcdonalds, chipotle, popeyes, starbucks, wendys, and dunkin d only 1-3 blocks away (wendy's is the furthest and it's maybe 3-4 blocks). There are also a lot of local restaurants around that aren't too expensive. There's a tavern, some brunch places, an italian restaurant, a lot of Dominican places, several delis, a gyro cart, a fried chicken/burger place, and a bunch of others I'm forgetting. Additionally, you can sign up for the Bard Hall mealplan which is 1-3 meals/week depending on your plan but for an extra couple bucks (I think it was a $6 one-time fee), you get two large pieces of tupperware to take whatever food you don't eat at dinner back with you and store it in your fridge, and they an hold A LOT of food. The food is pretty decent (not gourmet, but still tasty). There are also a few grocery stores around, and if you're the type of person who needs organic food or whatever, there's a trader joes on the upper west side like 10 mins away on the subway.

Bottom line, you won't have a problem with food.

Just to set the record on in the area letters for Columbia based off of an email I received from them: #1 They should be uploaded to your "Application Update" section in pdf form #2 They use it to try to accommodate the date you provide should they decide to grant you an interview.

Objection! That Trader Joe's on 72nd is not 10 minutes away on the subway! You could be waiting for ten minutes just at 168th street if you miss the damn elevator down to the 1. Plus, you don't want to be that person on the packed train with a million bags of groceries.
 
Is anyone here applying to the PhD to MD program? Trying to get a feel on how many people with PhDs are applying to med school.
 
I will have a PhD by matriculation but did not apply to that program. My background did not prepare me to do an accelerated MD in my opinion.
 
My PhD is in Biomedical Sciences, so I thought I might try it. One less year of loans also contributed to this decision. I already have too much student loan debt from undergrad. That was a real shocker when I finished grad school and received my first bill. No more deferment... until, of course, I matriculate into medical school.
 
We have quite a few people in our class with PhDs who are doing the 3 year program. They're a smart bunch (and there are definitely more of them than I initially expected).
 
Does anyone know the exact format of Columbia interviews? Is it traditional or MMI? Closed or open file? Etc. For some reason this information isn't explicitly stated in their II e-mail or anywhere on the website as far as I can tell...

So a friend and I were recently discussing the prerequisite requirements for P&S include "Two years of Chemistry, one of which must be Organic Chemistry, both with labs". Our issue is whether one full year of lab is required for the necessary year of organic. I read this to mean that both the Inorganic/Ochem courses must have some lab portion, i.e. a year of gen chem + lab and 2 semesters of Ochem with 1 semester of lab would be OK. My friend insists this requirements means that we need a full year/2 semesters of organic lab courses. My friend called the admissions office and says their answer was inconclusive (I didn't make the call so I don't actually know what they said). What do you guys think?

It depends on how your school does things so there is usually some grey area. I imagine if your school offers lab for both semesters, you should take both.
 
I'm pretty sure those are soft requirements, higher ranked schools are actually more flexible than the lowers from what I've seen recently.
 
If you're applying right now @cxra, do not take an extra semester of lab on the extremely off chance you get in to P&S. Figure all this stuff out post-acceptance
 
how long did it take any of y'all to hear back about student hosting? my interview is next week but I haven't heard anything from them so I'm wondering whether I should make backup plans!
 
II at P&S!!!!!!!!! Ahhh!!! omg!! Unreal. Silence from all other schools. LizzyM 71. Complete 8/12. I am on cloud 9. This is incredible. Columbia definitely has a holistic review. I come from a no name college and have severely lower stats than their median. Guys, dont lose hope!!!!!

Anyone have luck with in the area updates to the portal? I can only afford (as far as time for my thesis and money for rent) to go to NY once, and it'd be a shame if I had to pass up on the chance to interview here.

No 🙁. I received an II a few days ago and they weren't able to accommodate me due to all the interview slots being booked. Just didn't work out. Looks like I'll be making a second trip to NYC later this year. They are very nice though, so it's still worth a shot in my opinion!

I will be in the NYC area from 9/3-9/18. Worth a shot to send an in the area email? I know slots are probably all taken up but do you think it will help show that I am really interested in the school?

1. Today is 9/23 already if I'm not mistaken. You mean October?
2. No. You showed your interest by applying. Don't turn ITA emails into an underhanded way to get an II, it ruins it for those people who are actually trying to save on transportation costs. Send one if you need to due to time constraints.

1. Yup I meant October.
2. And it would definitely be helpful to interview when I'm already in NY since I have a full-time job and I'm using all my vacation days for interviews + am struggling to pay for flights and accommodations. Don't want to turn an ITA email into a plea for pity though.
