2015-2016 Columbia University College of P&S Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sorry still working on my SDN lingo could someone please tell me what +1 means!!!!

The next posts in this thread should be about Columbia P&S specifically.
Columbia P&S is specifically the only school that
  • Provides their students with complementary netflix passwords*
  • Blasts Kanye West's "Graduation" on loudspeakers during match day**
  • If you manage to squeeze in a quick dab dance during an exam and none of your neighbors notice, there are zero consequences***
  • Checks in with you regarding your mental health more than your mom does****
  • Can guarantee that you will gain 10 pounds of lean muscle (or whatever your fitness goals may be, I'm not a mind reader) in your first 6 months and/or look way more attractive than when you first started*****
*Not actually true
**Also not true, but willing to start a petition
***This is actually 100% true
****Also totally true
*****Not sure if true, but I'm going to keep telling myself this cause it helps me sleep at night

Enough of a palate cleanser, Wedgie?

Are there any events the evening before the interview?

I know that Columbia is receptive to ITA updates, but is there consensus on what exactly is appropriate for "in the area"? I'm from california and will be interviewing an hour or so outside of Manhattan. Does that qualify? It's just such a long trip to keep making..

That is definitely fine. You should email them.

I had emailed then an ITA request, they replied back saying that I should upload that request to the portal. So I guess upload is the better option?

Upload it. I sent them an ITA a few months back, and they acknowledged it, but nothing came out of it. When I got my II, my interview date ended up being a month after I was last in the NYC area haha. So idk if they can quite necessarily accommodate ITAs since they're so busy.

If you're from the west coast I'd do any school in a 200 mile radius!

That's good to hear.. I thought if it's passed my ITA email's stated time, it would mean that they passed on me for sure but I guess there is still hope.

anyone scheduled to interview for Bassett on the Dec or Jan date?

I just called them, they told me to email, I emailed, and the whole thing was sorted out same day. Though this was back in the last day of August so maybe they weren't as busy then.

Just curious, when does Columbia sends out its last invites and when are the last interviews?

I submitted a little before that and I got an interview invite today, so maybe they're not quite to you in the queue yet?

Just cancelled my December interview here. I hope someone gets it. Good luck to all!!!!

Can anyone comment on what would be an appropriate "update" to make on the application portal. I understand admissions is receptive to these updates, and I recently received word that I got a new job they might be interested in. Thanks!

I updated my app (here and at all other schools) with a sort of brochure/flyer that documents my participation a prestigious summer program next year and provides a finalized course description of what I'll be teaching.

I really don't think there's a hard and fast rule for what you can update with, so long as you believe it will help your application. If the new job will nurture their interest, I'd probably update it. At best, an update will help your candidacy, at worst, it'll do nothing.

Do ya'll think it's a good idea to send an update specifically to your interviewer and to general admission committee (would be same letter content wise)? Problem is, idk interviewer's email..

No, just send it through the tab on the applicant portal.

yup and yup. Available dates: umm I think it was only M,Th, and F of the last week in January. Nothing in February, not posted anyway. BUT I made an immediate ITA phone call and they fit me in the day after another one in mid-Jan so hellll yeah 2-for-1. Sorry can I say that on here? Stats range 3.9/522/5'8"
