2015-2016 Rutgers University - NJMS Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
More or less:

1. We value the qualities of cultural competence, humanism, and integrity in our school. What would you bring to our school?
2. If you're not an NJ resident, what are your significant ties to NJ?
3. Anything else you would like the adcom to know?
4. What are you doing this year if you're not in school?

Submitted the secondary. Fingers crossed! This is a great school!

Submitted the secondary earlier! Hoping for good news, I really like this school.

Anyone else submit yet?

If you are an in-state applicant, for number 4, do you put "n/a" or just leave it blank?
If you did research with a professor there, but it wasn't a formal research program, do you leave number 7 blank and put the information in number 9 where it asks for affiliation?

I would put N/A as opposed to leaving it blank. Someone in admissions once told me that leaving a question completely blank -- no matter how insignificant the question may be -- could be looked at negatively by an admissions committee.

So I submitted this before I got the email for it. Whoops. Anyway, they should have it on file then, right?

Soo, I am completing the Secondary now as an ED applicant and I want to know how you all approached the first question.

I applied last year and the first question was open ended, but this year they talk about specific traits (integrity, cultural competence, and humanism).

The question doesn't explicitly state that they want us to write about ourselves in regards to those traits, but I am assuming we should do that anyways, right? I might be thinking into this too much.

I think you should mention those traits but that is what that school is looking for in its applicants. They want to see how you demonstrate those traits that are important to them.

Any thoughts on whether it would hurt me to leave #5 blank? I don't really have anything else to tell them that's not already in my application...

You definitely should answer every applicable question. Anything left blank gives the committee room to insert thoughts and doubts. You want to present yourself to the fullest without leaving them guessing and to draw their own conclusions.

I too felt like I had told them everything in my application but was able to pull out a few more things to tell them. Maybe try talking about things you would like to do while at NJMS and your goals throughout med school.

Can anyone here please provide some insight on the interview? I have heard mixed reviews, and that it really depends on who interviews you.

If any of you can provide some insight as to the challenging questions you may have received, that would be extremely helpful!

How did you that lol?

Because on page 1 people said they were getting secondary invites to a public link, so I went to the public link and filled out the thing and submitted it along with my payment and everything, and since they don't screen it shouldn't matter when I submit the secondary if it's through a publicly available form.

Bold move cotton, lets see if it pays off..

Does anyone know if there's a way to check the status after submitting the secondary? Or is the confirmation email all we get?

Has anyone who interviewed after the first week heard back about decisions? Trying to figure out where they are with applications...

I talked with admissions today (about something unrelated to this) and they said that they will start reviewing the non-ED secondaries in a week or so

Any point in applying OOS?

Last year out of 2000 OOS applicants, they accepted 1. (from MSAR)

Edit: they accepted 2, if you count the international student 🙂

Edit 2: YES - you are right ** 2 matriculated, sorry about that. By all means, still give it a shot!

Isn't it one matriculant? That's not really the same as one accepted, wouldn't you say?

That's what I thought too... And I was technically just admitted as an OOS candidate so there is definitely hope. I do think that you definitely have to demonstrate why NJ is where you want to be however.

Oh boy.... That's gonna be a tough one.

Does anyone know what the process is like for the committee? Do they discuss your application once and decide or are there multiple rounds? I interviewed three weeks ago and they told me it will still take another couple weeks. I'm freaking out because it's going to be too late to apply to other schools if I am deferred 🙁

That is probably a good question for your adviser. They might be more familiar or able to find out than we are.

My pre-health adviser went to a conference with a bunch of med schools and afterword said that they did something odd at this school with IS/OOS status and that I should apply even though Im OOS. So maybe we have a shot. Maybe not. We shall see 🙂

It seems like the AdCom at NJMS reviews applicants for final decisions every OTHER Friday. No one here heard back within just a week of their interview (unless it was in the first round) so it seems they evaluate the interviewees from the 2 weeks PRIOR to the week of the meeting.

From the looks of when people heard back from this thread, that confirms it. Everyone who did get accepted heard back either the week of July 12th or 26th, usually early in the week (implying that the committee met on the 10th and 24th for final decision) . So the next meeting for final decisions should be this Friday, 8/7!

You are a ninja...im still waiting so according to your complex algorithm, hopefully early this next week?

BTW I believe its Thursday when they meet according to someone in this thread, and a current student confirmed it, but that shouldn't make much of a difference anyway

I interviewed the week of the 20th,
cGPA-3.85
sGPA-3.75
MCAT-31
EC: 2 years research, hospital shadowing, lots of TA'ing and tutoring, and a few school clubs
Congratulations! I interviewed a week before you and still haven't heard back 🙁 at this point it just seems like they're playing a cruel joke on me...
