2015-2016 Stony Brook University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got an email today saying that my application has been received and processed, just my LORs are missing...am I reading too much into it if the word "processed" is equating to "judgment already passed" in my head? Ugh
Don't fret - "processed" just means they've sorted your application materials and checked what you have turned in so far to see if you're missing anything else.

Can anyone confirm that the school requires an individual Cell Bio or Genetics course, or just course content consisting of these topics?

Biology
– 2 semesters with lab, one of which should include a course in cell biology or genetics

According to several incoming classmates, you may be able to convince them with a detailed course syllabus. I opted to take a stand alone course to avoid any problems.

Complete email today, I submitted 7/29 -__-
Why it takes a week to get the complete notification idk but hey! At least I'm in the queue now 😀

I got an email saying Secondary StonyBrook Application Received. For those that complete emails, did you get another complete email after that?

Yes

i didn't receive the complete email for a couple weeks, so i don't think there's a hard and fast rule on turnaround.

IS, stats are their median. good luck!

I think when you login it says they have a final decision ready 8 weeks from your complete date....is it safe to assume if you aren't given an II 4 weeks in you're probably getting a rejection?

Nope, I don't think any of us know enough to say that!

SUNYs love to send IIs when you least expect it. I'd expect a hold status or something rather than a rejection post 8 weeks.

I'm not 100% familiar with SB's process, though.

Hm, I'll go stalk the threads from last year and report back later on when I get the chance haha

EDIT: sarcasm

Dude not worth going crazy for. Go fuss about another school of yours and BOOM, 4 weeks will have passed

haha true, most schools haven't made timeframe statements like that though so I'm just curious!

They're usually vague and just say be patient. Which only makes me impatient-er.

chill
out

but also, how would i know what's safe to say? i'm not one of their adcoms after all haha

alright, schools generally do the same thing year after year with their admissions, was just curious if anyone knew of the policies since they mention that timeframe

everyone else can also relax now

noooo your old pic was so good!!! haha

I realized after I submitted that most people wrote like a paragraph. They said up to one page so I did a full-on 5 paragraph, 4000 character essay for each...OOS too 🙁

My answer to this question was about one page. I don't think the length is what matters dude, it's all about what you get across.

What did ya'll write about for the obstacle essay?

i wrote about playing a sport. definitely not my "greatest obstacle/challenge" essay i used for other schools' secondaries, but i must have done something right to get an II

my 2cents if anyone hasn't written it yet/is struggling to write it: it doesn't have to be related to medicine or even your biggest obstacle in life (if it is, more power to ya). just focus on writing something that's reflective, demonstrate self-awareness and explains how you grew from the experience

So did I. Anyone know if they silent reject?

I wrote almost a page for one topic, and 3/4'ths a page for the other. I wouldn't worry about it.

Anyone else complete for almost 8 weeks now? Totally forgot all about it until today when I was cleaning my inbox and clicked on the link to check my status.

I lied I was complete around then too, getting my SUNY silences confused haha. Good luck!
I really find the 'random reviews' that SUNYs do annoying.. if you are completed earlier you should have the opportunity first for a II. If not liked, put to the side for re-review later/reject on situations... But whatever, ugh.
I've been sitting on SBU, DS, and UB without notice and being complete since first week / beginning of second week of July.

Yep I got them all done in that timeframe as well! I didn't realize they all did random review though thought that was just UB?

I know DS has a non chronological review; it seems like SBU does too. I give up trying to figure out everyone's system.

If they do non-chronological review, how does the admissions office review then? By what order...?

you could be put into batches by stats, by geographic region (maybe state schools even do regions within the state), by committee letter vs. individual letters (which would need someone to check if they meet the requirements?)

all speculation, but i wouldn't be surprised if it's any combination of these or something i haven't even thought of!

State schools must have some very unbiased way of reviewing applicants I would imagine.. besides IS vs. OOS of course

IS New Yorker.

So far I've heard NOTHING from the SUNY schools, like brah, where's my II?

don't worry - it is still early in the cycle. my friend got a very late interview at stony last year and was admitted. SUNY schools are known for not reviewing applications in the order in which they were received

good to know, though I wish I knew before! I put those as my top priority and rushed to finish them lol

Just got an "application complete" email! God bless me with an II!

Did anyone else get an email saying that they were missing letters of recommendation?

I made them available on AMCAS since submitting my secondary. I'm not sure why they're "missing" as Stony Brook says.

Incoming first year student at Stony Brook. Was in the same boat as you guys last year, feverishly stalking SDN forums. Shoot me any questions you might have in regards to applying, interviewing, etc. Will update with information about everything else as I get more familiar with the school. Best of luck 🙂

Were you OOS or IS? Do you know how generous the financial aid is for OOS students? Recently got an II and I'd love to go here, but it's over 63k/year for OOS
