2015-2016 Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Totally in the same boat! But a good boat to be in if you ask me 🙂 Was Dr. Saguil able to tell you which 3rd of the wait list you were on? Just wondering, because if he was I may drop him an email.
When I called and spoke to him, he wouldn't give me any info about my position on the wait list

Any current enlisted Air Force selects here? I'm currently Active Duty enlisted selectee and had a question about how your process for reporting to COT is going? Please PM me.

Does anyone know if there are alternate dates to do BOLC this summer for the Army? And/or leave permitted for a weekend during BOLC? Spent a year + some planning a wedding and am wondering if we will have to change things up due to BOLC..

Juliette - Talk with whomever is contacting you for commissioning and orders to active duty - Ms Taylor or your contact at USUHS? Ask them for options. There are alternate dates but it's not likely they would let you attend because you would come onto active duty much earlier than needed for your USUHS start date in August -- (Not an option the class started 17 March - 10 May). The next class is the one you will be in June 10 - July 23 and the one after that is July 14 - September 7th (too late).

If approved and your orders have a start date taking you straight to USUHS in early August/late July, you could postpone BOLC until after M2 or M3 during one of your electives/clerkships but that is a scheduling pain and might interfere with board test prep. Other USUHS students have done this but it's not common. Generally it's done because of late acceptance or UG graduation.

You could try to talk to someone at BOLC regarding a pass for that weekend. Taking boards is an acceptable day off, seems like your wedding would be too.

If you are already accepted to USUHS then ask to be added to the 2017/18/19 facebook pages and ask your question there. They would have current information and ideas as to how it has been handled recently and what approvals they needed for a specific weekend pass/leave for a wedding.

Does anyone know whether they are receptive to additional LoR while on waitlist? My clinical letter was quite dated and I'm now able to ask my boss at my new job for one.

It depends on which waitlist you are in. If you are in the Primary Waitlist I would add all the letters or all the additional work you have been doing. If you are on the Alternate Waitlist (such as I am), you should consider holding on to all that information and using it as an enhancement to your new application next cycle since the Alternate Waitlist is pretty much a long shot. Good luck!!

That was my concern, too. I am on the primary list, but I'd feel like i need to go all in either way. Not to say I've not lost very many poker games that way, though..

Many thanks for the input.

No problem! Primary waitlist is a good place to be right now so congratulations! Good luck!

Thanks!

Honestly, I've been on that list since November.. i feel like i must be ranked pretty low.

Most likely, which means all LoR and additional activities that you will present might be very helpful because just being on that list gives you a chance of acceptance (vs. the alternate). I would submit as much as I can because movement on that list will rise exponentially in the next few weeks. Get your ranking up before heartbreak day; that way once admissions starts making large movements you will be updated and ready.

@T800'sThumb I've also been on the list since November, but keep in mind there hasn't been a whole lot of movement (reported on SDN anyways). yet. I've seen probably 1-3 people from each branch get accepted off the wait list thus far. Most movement won't happen until Late April-Mid May. Also keep in mind that if you weren't fully medically qualified at the time you were wait-listed that they pull medically qualified individuals first.

Hang in there guys. April is just around the corner : D Hopefully there will be quite a bit of movement.

I'm sorry if this has been answered but how can you tell which waitlist you are on?

I just called the admissions office and in actuality there is no "primary" waitlist, you are either wait listed or put on the alternate list which is specified in the letter you got (so if it didn't say anything about Alternate, then you are on the waitlist).

Also, to individuals that asked above, I asked about updates and she told me that when a spot becomes available, that the Dean does relook at your application and will see any updates you sent in.
Thanks for the clarification! By any chance did you enquire about the current length of the waitlists?

Yep, its exactly what was mentioned. Your letter will say Alternate waitlist or plain Waitlist, which means primary. Good luck!
My letter specifically said primary waitlist. You can call it whatever you like I suppose, but there are two lists. LTC Saguil apparently prefers to call the waitlist the primary waitlist.

Definitely talk to the admissions office and get more information. Try to attend BOLC this summer with the rest of your incoming Army class and get it out of the way. At BOLC, you will have most weekends off and the instructors will almost always grant you weekend leave as long as you're traveling within the U.S. If a quick weekend wedding is something you want to do, notify Ms. Taylor when she processes your orders. Before BOLC starts you will also receive a welcome e-mail from their main contact person (for me, it was CPT Rayvon Stanley) and you should inform this person ASAP before you make travel arrangements that you will be requesting leave to get married. Leave is never guaranteed, but I see no reason for them to say no.

Your wedding is understandably important so if a weekend is not enough, you may be allowed to postpone BOLC until third/fourth year. Be aware that scheduling could be a pain as you might have to skip 2 clinical rotations or miss a spring/summer break depending on the class dates. People have done it in the past but it's pretty rare.

Thanks for the update guys! Hopefully the Navy list starts to move soon! 🙂 What schools did you guys end up committing to? Congratulations, btw!

CWRU in Cleveland. USUHS is a great school. It just boils down to the fact that I'm not ready to commit ~15~ years of my life to the military. I'm sorry it took me so long to decide for those waiting for a spot, but it was a really tough decision.

Awesome. Yeah, the commitment can be a bit to swallow if you're not career-minded for the military. Doesn't make much sense to commit > 11+ years if you don't plan on retiring from the military. Thanks for keeping us updated, and goodluck in all that you do!

Don't be sorry! This is a once in a lifetime decision which will determine the rest of your career. There is no other choice other than taking as long as you need to consider all the pros and cons, and to make a decision that you will not regret later in life. Congratulations on your acceptances, and all your future endeavors!

Apparently colleagues in the Primary waitlist are getting letters both saying either primary or plain waitlist. The fact that your letter specifically said Primary doesnt mean that all of them do or that our friends here did not get one that simply stated Waitlist (unless you consider that they are lying about it, which makes no sense). So, its not a matter of what I like to call it, I think its a matter of sharing our input in order to help our colleagues figure out their position in the admissions cycle. As far as the information that was gathered and shared here, we can say that applicants who are in the primary wait list (congrats!), have received letters that say Primary Waitlist, or Waitlist. So, whith this info. I would gather two conclusions. First, I would assume that both of them mean the same thing, and Second, that regardless of the information here I would advise our colleagues here to contact the admissions office if they had doubts of which list they are currently placed in.

Hello Everyone,

My husband and I usually monitor the blogs, but today we wanted to update all of you with some good news. The army wait list is moving! My husband interviewed in early October and was wait listed in November. He received the call this morning around 10am! We're looking forward to meeting everyone, and the best of luck to all of you still waiting for the call!
