2015-2016 Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys! I am trying to make summer plans with my dad to go out to CO and hike. Do any of y'all know the dates for ODS (Navy and Air Force)? We want to try to plan around those in case I get pulled off the wait list. Thanks!!

Air Force COT: June 27 through July 29
Navy ODS: May 22 through June 24 or June 26 through July 29 (second session only as of 21 January)
Army BOLC: June 10 through July 23

Per an email from Dr. Saguil. Not set-in-stone, but likely correct.

Have been watching this thread on SDN for quite a while waiting to hear success stories and hopefully share one of my own so I decided to make an account and share if I'm lucky enough this year to get into USUHS. Interviewed 03 Dec, placed on hold status 07 Mar, placed on WL 15 Mar for an Army spot. Good luck to everyone here waiting for a spot!

Oh and by the way, congrats to all those that have already been accepted to the incoming class!!!

As of 21 JAN, the only option for ODS is the second session.

Hi! I'm a student in Class of 2019. For those who have been accepted, remember to join the Facebook group to get all the good gouge. Just search for the Class of 2020 group, request to be added, and wait for our external affairs officer to approve you. If you have questions you don't want to ask in the group you can message me here and I'll do my best to answer them.

For the rest of you - *hug* Hang in there.

Hello! We might have met. I interviewed on December 03 as well, and was placed on the Alternate Waitlist for an AF spot. Good luck to you!

I hope I get a call soon. The anxiety is starting to lower my sex drive.

I totally understand. My sex drive has not been affected... yet! But, I have developed what seems to be a bipolar disorder hahahha. I can be happy one minute and going loko the next  hahaha.

Me too!! I feel like I have good days and bad days. Trying hard to keep a positive outlook full of good days!!

Well guys, Im gonna' share my update just for support and entertained during these times of uncertainty. I was placed on the Alternate Waitlist and Im afraid it pretty much means "better luck next time". I feel absolutely honored to be placed on that list since it means that the program has considered me and didn't reject me (which is amazing). But, yeah... I talked to the admissions office and so far "statistically" there has not been movement in that list for the past couple of admission cycles. I never loose hope because each year is different, but stats are stats. Im already working on how to enhance my next application. Although Im very proactive and perseverant... it would have been a dream to get accepted this cycle. I have a family so each year I wait creates a little bit of strain on everyone. But, yeah... Fortunately I have all the support I need so, I know Ill be fine :highfive:.

I still keep myself very active in this forum since I feel we have all undergone this hard task at the same time and I cant wait to see the outcome for everyone! Im cheering for all of you, so COME ON! Keep me updated!! Woot woot!!!

Don't lose hope just yet-- you never know what could happen! I wish you all the luck in your medical endeavours-- you seem like a very positive person, which quite frankly is what the medical world needs IMO.

Aww, thanks a lot for your support and kind words! All the luck to you too!

Did you get an update from your admissions counselor about what to do to improve your application next year? I asked a few months ago and was told to give them 6-8 weeks. Nothing yet so I have been working off of the advice here and from my exit interview at my state school (more shadowing experience in different fields). Trying to figure out if their 6-8 weeks is typically 2-3 months or if the counselor just forgot about me.

I would definitely give them a call. Its been a while. And, No, I didnt get feedback... I kinda' have an idea about the reasons for mine, so decided to just work on my next application. Good luck!

Sometimes the feedback is good sometimes it's worthless. My feedback after last year was to get at least one new letter of recommendation. That's it. Didn't even get an interview this year.

heyy, Glycerine-- were you ever able to work your situation out? Perhaps defer admission or do something with submitting the paperwork late?

UCF allowed me to defer admission. Just got official word today that they accepted the request. They have been extremely helpful all along the way.

Wow... that's strange. There might have been other areas that they did not mention in the feedback where there was some room for improvement. Man.... :eyebrow:. Well, you should just take matters to your own hands and analyze your application so you can perfect everything you can before trying again and coming back stronger than ever. Its a long process so perseverance will be your best friend! ... and mine hahahaha cause I'm in the same boat. Good luck!

Eh... I got an early interview and was waitlisted early as well so I don't think I had any glaring issues. Also I increased my GPA, clinical shadowing, volunteering, and got 3 new letters for the next cycle. None of that mattered

I just wanted to say...if you get accepted you'll be living in the capital region, so you have to cheer for our sports teams! You should tune in now to root for the Washington Capitals in the first playoff game of the season tonight against the Flyers!

That makes zero sense. I'm so sorry that happened. But congratulations on your UCF acceptance! I'm sure everything will work out for the best in the long run : )

I'm glad you were able to get the deferment @Glycereine , it sounds like you had a stressful Rollercoaster of a cycle. Are you going to apply to USUHS next year (are you even allowed to apply elsewhere if you take a deferment?)

Thanks!

Can't apply anywhere else if you defer. Honestly USUHS kinda turned me off right now anyways. Great school but some bitterness lol. It's all good. Everything for a reason right 🙂

Well I didn't have to call, I ended up getting the email from my representative shortly afterwards. As you mentioned @Glycereine the feedback was not nearly as in-depth as I would have hoped. I am thankful for the input but I think it is a standard email of rewrite personal statement, secondaries, one new clinical letter or LOR, and show something significantly different since they will compare my entire old application to the new one. The phone conversation when I was informed of a pre-II rejection was more informative now that I think about. Using that original conversation, the inputs from here, and the aforementioned email feedback to hope for a better reapplication cycle.

Congrats on your acceptance and defer allotment. Best of luck, hopefully you can snag a HPSP/HPCP spot if you still want to.

Same, didn't get that e-mail 🙁
Me either, no email here. That probably means we're all more than 25 spots below the top =( or maybe I'm just being a pessimist.

But I'll be an optimist and hope that means 20-25 spots per branch.

That's strange that so many didn't get the email.. maybe it's another distro list mistake..

The email also mentions a potential new appointment group for veterans health and offers a link to a Google doc to opt in or out of consideration.

Yea that is quite strange. But that was essentially it. It mentioned spots opening up, Dr. Saguil asked that if you have been accepted to your dream school and do not plan on accepting a spot to USUHS to please let them know so they can remove you from the wait list, and then the potential veterans health positions that may not even happen until next year.

Hopefully whether you received it or not had more to do with the potential veterans health positions than your current wait list rank.

It said that it was 20-25 across all branches. I asked him how many people were on the wait list, and he told me there were still about 160 on the combined wait lists.

Ouch, that's a little disheartening. Did he say which was the longest/shortest?

That is disheartening. I feel like there hasn't been a whole lot of movement this year. Maybe that's just me though.

No e-mail + 160 people on the waitlist + only 20-25 offers across all branches = depression 🙁

Thanks for the info guys, even if there are a bunch of depressed premeds now.

Okay I'm done sulking now. Look on the brightside, for those of you that got the email, that probably means you're close to the top so you got a pretty good chance of getting accepted! 🙂

Anyone have any thoughts on e-mailing Dr. Saguil? I'm trying to weigh if I should bother him or if I should hold off- this is in reference to trying to weigh holding off paying to prepare to take the MCAT again for the next admissions cycle or waiting to see what happens on the wait list. I am trying to hold onto a measure of hope while trying to exercise a level of caution in preparation that I don't get in during this admissions cycle. I know that he can't tell me where I sit on the wait list, but I am trying to lean forward in preparation in the event that I do have to apply next cycle. I'm sure he gets a lot of people asking him this same question around this time of year.

I agree with you

I did. He was very kind and helpful as usual.
