2015-2016 University of California - Davis Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone think/asked if we'll hear back this week? (for those that also got the delayed decision email)
God that would be nice. I had 2 schools I was supposed to hear back from in October. Davis is stringing me along and the other school is getting to the last 2d of its window (hoping they won't drop the ball too). I just want to hear something, darnit!

I apologize if this has been asked before, but which secondary prompt on the first page of this thread should I use (I'm pre-writing)?

The first one is extremely brief, with only 2 prompts plus 3 activities. The second post has a much more thorough secondary, but it states it is from last year - should I ignore this one? Also, does the character count include spaces? Thanks to anyone who can answer.

Both posts are accurate...if you look through, you'll see the same 2 prompts in the 2nd post. The additional questions are all tied to specific programs...MSTP, PRIME, etc.

Character counts include spaces.

On second glance, the first two prompts were reduced to 500 instead of 1500 characters this year. Just to be sure, the additional essays (for PRIME, etc.) are still 1,500 characters with spaces this year?

No, the additional programs are 600 characters I believe. 600 or 500, I can't remember but def not 1,500.

EDIT: just checked, special programs are 600 characters, experiences are 750, 2 essay questions are 500.

Thank you!!! A 600-char essary is much different from a 1500-char one 🙂

Ah, sorry, I wasn't paying attention to charCount, just the questions! Good luck to you!

Good for you. No need to give others false hope though. What I was told was literally directly from the dean. I'm sure there a couple exceptions but it's better to be realistic and listen to the dean. They review apps pretty quickly too.

They used to reject a good portion of people in october, only diff now this is they hold onto people's apps longer. you were probably just assigned a higher numerical score in the initial review of your app that put you in the pool to be interviewed later in the cycle.
I'm an MS1 at Davis right now, I can tell you that more than a third of our class was in the exact same situation as me. Davis does review apps quickly, but they review as they go. It's not like you only get one chance to get looked at. I also really doubt you actually heard that from the dean here because our dean is all about making sure everyone gets their fair shot and not hanging onto applicants for no reason.

Hi guys! I'm also an MS1 at Davis and am happy to answer any questions you have about classes, the Davis community, student-run clinics, etc. Davis is a wonderful place.

@eleventy @Storph So what's the deal with UCD not giving out financial aid offers until after the deadline to drop all other acceptances?
I'm worried I would be forced to drop any other acceptances (assuming I get anymore) before knowing the cost.
Should I not expect to be able to compare financial aid packages before deciding where to matriculate?

@pDeluxe any insight on the whole 'delayed decision' thing? I wasn't under the impression that this sort of thing was their MO.

lady on the phone was extremely nice. I submitted end of July. No secondary. lol doesn't seem like the best of news, but I shall remain hopeful 😀

Does anyone know if the post-secondary application review is done out of order? I was complete over 2 months ago but my status still shows up as "completed." But I know people who submitted their secondaries after me and have already heard back with an update to their application status...

Every stage of this process, at essentially every school, proceeds nonlinearly. The only thing you'll learn from watching the timelines of people around you is how quickly anxiety levels can spike.

Appearances are deceiving. It's like in sociology how there's a "front stage" and "back stage" and the whole concept of professionalism. Just because they present themselves one way doesn't mean they really operate that way. Davis has a very good reputation for all the right reasons, but the way medical school handles itself in admissions definitely has me thinking otherwise, despite the idealism given here, and they're also not very transparent from what I've seen. Even though real transparency isn't that common the school offering better explanations to applicants when stuff like this comes would do wonders.

They're also apparently running behind, so even though we all hate to hear "just giving it time" is the only thing we can do.
Oh sure...I intend to do so, and I post on here in lieu of pointlessly annoying them with my questions. However, I feel that a certain measure of curiosity is justified when I was one of the very early interview dates, was told I was guaranteed a decision by a certain date, and then was not notified of the delay until after the possible acceptance window. I'm not really upset; I totally understand that delays happen. Still, this is the only place I am actually feeling anxious about, largely due to the circumstances, and that would be alleviated with a few details.

does anyone have an idea for how many students have been interviewed to this point? Maybe someone that asked during a recent interview? Thanks

Anyone know when the next round of decisions goes out? I'm assuming (hoping) us deferred folks will get lumped into the next batch and it'd be nice to have an idea of timeframe.

Got accepted today. Interviewed October 16th.
Hopefully this wait is over, then!
If another batch goes out and we're not in it I will probably start taking it personally (aka thinking they're doing it on purpose) 🙁

Congratulations!

Out of how many? Also, Should I be worried if I haven't received an II, I was complete at Davis 8/26? 2015 UC Post Bacc graduate.
Nobody can answer that for you. All we can do at this point is wait and keep reminding ourselves that no news is good news.

Has anyone received an II lately? I just went through the last few pages and it seems like there have been no II in a while.
II received on 10/30. Complete 8/25. IS, ties to Davis community. LizzyM mid 60s. First (and only) date available was mid February. Good luck to those still waiting!

WOW, mid february?

Anyone know when's the latest they interview? I wouldn't think anything passed Mid-March..

It's getting so hard to wait without emailing them for clarification on this deferral thing. They were so clear about what to expect after the interview, it's hard to change over to 'everything is completely unexplained' mode again. I thought that, good or bad, I'd have answers by Oct 15 and now it's just...indefinite? Possibly intentional because they didn't want to accept me? I don't know what to think, and with my departure from the country looming and no acceptances, it's getting more tempting to email then for more details. I don't want to be one of those super annoying nagging applicants, though.

I can appreciate that this is stressful, even with my optimistic perspective I feel the absence of a decision weighing on me. However, I cannot imagine anyone at UCDSOM 'intentionally trying to stress us out.

If they were not interested or unsure that we fit with the next years class that they are building, they would have rejected us or placed us at the bottom the waitlist. It makes no sense for them to keep our applications active if they are not giving our applications serious consideration. I suspect they may have a limited number of acceptances that they can extend this early in the cycle and are are holding onto our applications to review along side future interviewees.

Hang in there! No news is good news!

Not intentionally trying to stress us out...but there is a difference between "we didn't get to these apps" and intentionally deferring them. Being intentionally deferred is a bad thing, and if they're holding us to review alongside future interviewees, we're the 'iffy' candidates. So, basically, what you're describing is exactly what I was hoping was NOT the case, because that is straight-up bad news.

I would think that if they simply didn't get to us, we would be at the top of the list for the next set of reviews, but that since there have been acceptances since the Oct 15 batch, but no decision for me (or, I'm assuming from their silence, the other deferrals)...it's looking more and more as if it was intentional 🙁 In that case, no news is finally not good news. It's "you're not good enough" news.

I think they interview through the end of March, but can't swear by it. I was blown away by the date (and a little bummed), but consider it more time to practice for the MMI? :smack: I am comforted by the fact I know M1s who interviewed around that time last cycle and matriculated.

Anyone who was verified in July/Aug still pending decision?

Similar to UCLA, wondering if anyone international have received secondaries or IIs from UCD?

I don't know who you are but:

1. You need to chill - why are you taking these decisions personally? There are like 10,000 applications floating around, they couldn't make it personal if they tried.
2. WHY are you fighting the urge to email them? Use a different email address than your AMCAS, don't include your name or ID and ask whatever question it is! Worst case scenario = no response.
3. If you have zero interviews you're allowed to be nervous but stop sounding so defeated!

1. Personal? Not exactly. An intentional deferral would be a bad sign for actually getting in, is all...and this place is my best shot AND I loved it there.
2. Because I don't want to be annoying and nag them. It's not about getting in trouble for it or anything; I won't communicate with them without putting my name on it, but I avoid bugging adcoms because I recognize that I am merely one of 10,000, and if we all email them their lives will suck. I generally don't email because it doesn't do anything except waste their time with my demands for reassurance. I prefer to bug SDN for that 😛
3. All the interviews in the world won't help if my red zone stats suck. I had 2 early interviews that I thought went very well. One is already back - waitlist, and not for stats - and I'm worried that Davis has passed me over. If I struck out on both of those, I don't fancy my odds going forward, period.

I think you should ignore number 2 and ask anyways. It's their job. They get paid to do this - it's not a free service that you're abusing.

Once you get an interview you have a real shot of getting in - scores don't matter once you get one - so just wait out for some more, I'm sure you'll be fine.

Scores still matter...they never go away entirely, but yeah, they already decided your scores are good enough if you get an interview. I'm just running out of time before I leave the country, so I'm getting antsy. Normal waiting times I am also fine with, but it's disconcerting to be bumped out of the usual schema without further explanation.

Anywho, you're right, you're right...I'm chilling. Sorry. 😛 Thanks!

Just wondering if there are any acceptance calls today? :\

They told us 2-4 weeks, but my host got the call even before that.
Nice!
Sorry I was grumpy before; sometimes I get frustrated that they're getting to recent people when they haven't gotten to some of the September folks yet.

Understandable! This whole process has got me (and I'm sure many others) walking on eggshells.
