2015-2016 University of California - Irvine Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I may just be reading too much into this but does having a "Student ID" on the upper left corner of the status page mean anything? I've been checking every other day-ish since I submitted and that just appeared today. Previously only my name, AAMC ID, and the link to activate UCINetID were there.
I'm pretty sure everyone gets that on their application eventually. I've been complete and under review since 7/16 and didn't make the first round of interviews so I don't think the ID is indicative of anything.

Alright, sounds good. Thanks!

I was curious about the Disadvantage Status. So you can only fill that out if you claimed you were disadvantaged in the AMCAS, otherwise you're not supposed to?

Most likely that they will only look at it if you indicated disadvantaged status on the AMCAS so that they can evaluate your application under further context.

If you didn't and filled it out anyway, I'm sure they simply wont look at it.

Congrats to those receiving II!

For the personal accomplishment essay, do you think it would be better to talk about helping a friend overcome depression/alcohol abuse, getting over my fear of driving (I was in a major car crash when I was younger and only recently got my license at the age of 23), or working as a volunteer research assistant and then being the first undergrad offered a paid position?

Those are all great topics, but personally if I were to read essays like these I'd probably want to read about the second one the most.

Thanks! That was the one I was leaning towards

So my primary app was received almost 4 weeks ago (confirmation e-mail from UCI), and my status has not changed. Does that probably indicate that I didn't get a secondary? I would have expected it to change to "Not Awarded" if I had been screened out...do you guys think I should contact them?

If we were complete BEFORE all these people that are getting interviews, is it safe to say that we've been passed over (aka rejected, for now) or put on hold to be re-reviewed? Does anyone have any insight as to how the timing of invites work?

No, it is not safe to say any of those things. Schools in general may not review apps in order. Just be patient.

Sad, looks like I might not be able to apply here after all. Was finally getting around to this secondary, but the prereqs of having an upper div Bio not including Biochemistry mean that I don't fulfill the prereqs aka auto disqualified. 🙁

I guess I should save the secondary fees, but one less chance to stay in Cali.

  1. For the activities page, is it better to just to list the organization name? Or should I list them out exactly how they are titled on my primary application?

  2. For those with II and took a gap year. Did you actually describe your motivations for your gap-year activities? Or did you just provide a brief description?

You can always fulfill that last prereq before matriculation.

I got an interview without having finished the prereqs, so I'd still submit an application!

Just got the axe here, LM 72-74. IS. Sucks since I really like this location. Complete 7/20

Yeah around 6:30PM PST, via email. CA is crazy man, just wondering which schools will bite on my app.

do you guys know if a flatout rejection this early is not a good sign? I see that @Cawolf also got the same early rejection and was wondering if this is an indication of anything

It's obviously not a good sign, but it shouldn't worry you too much. Everyone is expecting some rejections.

I frankly wish more schools would just make up/down decisions.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to it. It hurts, but on the bright side, one less thread to monitor and one less Application Status page to keep revisiting for updates 🙂 My first rejection came 3 days before my first II. It is a long cycle hang tight.

On the bright side I have had five II already, so Irvine just wasn't right for me. I don't think it is an indication of anything.

I figured that would happen more often than not with a GPA around 3.0. 🙂

Nah I don't think so. It's just that rejection is a huge part of the process. I know it's tough, but you will be OK. Best of luck with the rest of your apps!!

I was thinking the only positive thing out of this is that now I know some schools are reading my app. Been complete for a long time at other places with just silence

Does anyone know the chances of II for out of state applicants who got secondaries?

US NEWS: 1403 applicants for 76 interviews = 5.42%
MSAR: 1423 applicants for 62 interviews = 4.37%

I'm not sure which one is right, but they are relatively close.

I guess it's a mystery how many of those 1400 applicants receive secondaries?

I read on their website that 3,500 receive secondaries out of 5,000-6,000 applicants. Not sure how that is separated out of the IS/OOS, but a little more than half get a secondary so maybe by that calculation you could expect 8-12% chance of getting an interview if you are OOS.

It's getting close to interview day and I haven't heard back about student host request or meet the med students event. Book a hotel now and cancel if the host program pulls through, or wait it out?

Same. I want to email them, but I'd rather not pester them.... You do it! 🙂

Edit: I got a student host yesterday, I think they were just busy finding spots for everyone.

Is it still possible to get a secondary from here if we haven't received one yet?

Does anyone know if they require 1, 2 or no Biochemistry classes? I'm confused by the wording on the secondary, where it asks for 4 semesters of Chemistry that must include Inorganic, Organic, and Biochemistry. My interpretation is that they want 3 semesters of inorganic/organic and 1 semester of biochemistry...

I think you are right about the 3 semesters of inorganic/organic + 1 semester of biochem since it all needs to add up to 2 years. Also, they require either 1 quarter or 1 semester of biochem and it cannot count as a biology requirement.

Just submitted!

Amcas verified 8/12, secondary received 8/19

Still the only UC secondary I've received as of now. LizzyM 71

Does anyone know what the interview --> acceptance rate is? I always thought for the UCs it was quite high but I don't want to delude myself

Rejected...OOS, LizzyM 71, Complete 7/17

Didn't get an email yet, just saw that my status for interview changed to "Not Awarded" last night at midnight.

Sighh, second rejection, and this one kind of hurts. I guess my chances were slim anyways, with ~4% interview rate for OOS

II with no email, check those portals the silent updates are real! Complete 7/19

Hang in there! The cycle is finally starting to kick into gear 🙂

II received via email on Sunday, 8/30 @ 6 pm. In-state, ORM, LizzyM is 73 and I was rejected when I applied last year.

Secondary received 7/15 and submitted 7/18.

Congrats bruddas. I hope I receive some good news in the next wave:nailbiting:

Just wanted to say, the interview yesterday was amazing. The students and faculty were very friendly and kind. They made the environment very calm and nurturing and low stress. My opinion of the school elevated even more because of everything I learned and the atmosphere that surrounds the school.

How is the interview? Was it really casual/conversational or more formal?

The whole day seemed pretty relaxed. The admissions staff went above and beyond to take care of us.

The interviews overall were pretty casual/conversational with the faculty interview going into more detail about your file. Best thing to do is relax; think about the big picture behind any of your given activities/why medicine.

Really hoping for some good news this Halloween! Good luck everyone.

For those rejected/invited to interview, how long was your interview status "under review" before you were notified of your fate?
