2015-2016 University of California - Los Angeles (Geffen) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those people who received secondaries have you guys completed (or will be complete by graduation) all the Prerequisites. I've already graduated and I only have half a year of math (UCLA won't accept my AP credit for the other semester). My AMCAS was verified in early June, OOS 3.8/33 and I'm still waiting on the secondary. I'm starting to think it's because I didn't list statistics as a course I plan on taking before matriculating.

Hey, I had AP/CLEP for General Chemistry Level I (1st semester), so I assume you took higher chemistry classes? If so, you should be fine.

Thanks for the response. How many higher chemistry/physics classes do you need? I only have 1 chemistry class and 1 physics class currently. And do they need to have lab?

I got the secondary but I only have 1 semester of upper level physics and 1 semester of upper level chemistry when UCLA requires a full year of each with lab. I'm not sure if I should complete the secondary though since I don't think I meet their requirements...

Thanks for the reply, this is encouraging to hear. Are you still in school or have you graduated? For me all I would have to do is take a statistics course the summer before school starts, and I can take some cheap community college statistics. (I would have no problem doing this if I was starting medical school at UCLA)
But for you it seems like a lot of classes to make up, if you decided to attend UCLA.

No problem. I'm still currently in school, so I have 1 more year left to make up the classes. But I'm not sure if I want to go through that trouble. I definitely wouldn't want to repeat gen physics and gen chem the summer before med school.

I have half a year of math, also because my APs are not accepted. Still got a secondary, but I did list stats as a future course.

I emailed them about that, and they said they send secondaries regardless of prerequisites, but I'm starting to think b/c I didn't list that I will take stats in the future they may not want to send me a secondary. It's a toss up right now; it's been 2 months since they've received my AMCAS (7/2/15 is when schools could first receive primary apps) and I still haven't received secondary. Then I see people in this thread who just finished their primary a week ago and get a secondary.

Is the transcript due before application is reviewed? I cant figure out why its on the applicant status page

I think it's part of their decision after the interview.
Why on earth would it be? All of that information is already in AMCAS...getting the official transcripts is just a final double check, like reviewing your background check. It provides no new information to them, but would greatly increase the amount of logistical work during the cycle.

anyone has an interview on the 21st of September?

Is there a specific address we use to mail transcripts or just use the admissions committee one on the portal?

@bluemachine any way I can PM about specific questions about UCLA? 🙂 I don't think I can since it doesn't appear on your profile the "start a conversation" option lol

I totally understand , same here too much of excitement. I'm freaking out, they have a much earlier date than you. meeh !

When is your interview? I still can't seem to find the student host program. Would you be able to direct me to a link?

usually the student host program is reserved for those that live far away from campus (aka OOS/out of country). but if you feel like you really need a student host, then feel free to reach out to the admissions office to ask for the link

What difference does it make whether you travelled 8hrs (IS) or 12, if it's not a day trip you need a place to stay. Not that they're obligated to provode that, I just don't see the point in differentiating between interviewees.

you have a point and tbh, i dont know. but from what ive heard, they only really give the link to those OOS. maybe because if everybody requested a student host, we wouldn't have enough to accommodate all of them? not sure

I used this one:
STUDENT ADMISSIONS
DAVID GEFFEN SOM AT UCLA
17-253 EAST CENTER FOR THE HEALTH
SCIENCES BOX 957035
LOS ANGELES, CA 90095-7035

Does anyone know if UCLA is receptive to "in the area" emails? I will be flying in from the east coast for another interview and would love to minimize trips if possible (of course willing to fly out again though for UCLA!)

i got my application receipt email on July 7th and i haven't heard anything since then.... am i screwed?lol

I don't know about UCLA's policy, but most schools try to be accommodating for situations like this. They understand that traveling for interviews are expensive, and schools know that most likely if they are inviting you for interviews so are other schools. The other day the AAMC had a webinar and the three panelists (all med school admissions deans) said they try to help students coordinate interview dates if they will be interviewing in the area with another school.

Can anyone verify the address to send transcript after accepting interview? After accepting the interview, I lost access to the transcript instructions on the address to send transcripts to.

This was posted by another user and I want to verify it is the correct address. Thank you!

Does anyone know if the admissions committee prefers that both of the two letters from instructors come from science instructors? Thanks!

Does anyone have any tips for the interview or the type of questions they might ask?

II received 9/3, secondary submitted 7/28. LizzyM 77

Just a heads up about scheduling for those still waiting to hear from UCLA: when you're invited to interview, UCLA doesn't give you the option to choose an exact interview date. Instead, you list the days of the week (M-F) that you prefer to interview on and specific dates that you are NOT available. Using that information, they then assign you an interview date. Consequently, it may be more difficult to get the exact date you want in the case that you were trying to schedule socal interviews closer together.

Does anyone know how far out they are currently scheduling interviews? Or how long it takes to actually schedule the interview after you receive the invite?

Just now at 11:40?? When were you complete?

Well more like early afternoon but I try to not refresh my email every five minutes in order to conserve some speck of sanity.

Primary July 21
Secondary Received: July 29, 2015
Secondary Submitted August 2, 2015
Interview: September 9

Edit: They just emailed me. Interview in 5 days. Gulp. I may have lost said speck of sanity.

Also, does anyone know the process for sending in transcripts? There aren't any instructions on the portal. 🙁

Why would you send one in? They already have your grades...generally transcripts are sent after acceptance, but prior to matriculation simply for verification/record-keeping purposes. Does UCLA have some bizarre system I don't know about where they purposefully increase the amount of crap they have to sift through without gaining additional information?
