2015-2016 University of California - Los Angeles (Geffen) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think this got lost in the above shuffle. Pls respond.

I'll bite. Incredibly supportive faculty (I have 3-4 mentors already!), tons of research and clinical opportunities (I'm a month in and am presenting a paper at a regional conference from research I started once I got to ucla, and I also have been I touch with ~8 physicians who are enthusiastically willing to let me shadow), and a really good curriculum (exams every 8 or so weeks at the ends of the blocks, but there are weekly self-assessments that don't count towards your grade that help you keep on track and see how you're doing. Plus true pass/fail! Plus good mix of lecture, PBL, small group labs, and clinical skills/doctoring workshops). I'm really happy here 🙂 if you have any more specific questions, I'm happy to help!

Thanks, that sounds great!

I was just practicing my MMI, and I felt like I could answer most questions in less than 3 minutes, and even then, I feel like I'm rambling. How are the MMI questions asked? Are they more conversational with dialogue back and forth? Or will I need to talk for the 8 minutes?

It totally depends on the particular interviewer. But based on my own MMI experiences at several schools, my general advice is don't babble just to fill space. Give a thorough response, but don't just ramble. It'll work out!

Well more like early afternoon but I try to not refresh my email every five minutes in order to conserve some speck of sanity.

Primary July 21
Secondary Received: July 29, 2015
Secondary Submitted August 2, 2015
Interview: September 9

Edit: They just emailed me. Interview in 5 days. Gulp. I may have lost said speck of sanity.

Do you mind telling me if you are IS or OOS? Thank you!

pieology replaced that hot dog place?!??!! YESS.

and umami is fantastic but always manages to dent my wallet.... 🙁

Does anyone know if they send out an Interview day schedule? I only know the time I need to be there, but I have not received any additional information.

I don't know about you guys, but I had a very bad experience when I called the admissions office with a question today. The receptionist was an incredibly rude, impatient, and condescending woman. I asked her about a discrepancy on the school's website FAQ and last year's MSAR regarding IS/OOS residency. The school's FAQ says that UCLA doesn't prefer IS, yet last year's MSAR showed that proportionally more IS applicants got more interviews. She acted like I was attacking her and the integrity of the school and accused me of being rude even though I knew she was the one who was. I apologized for being "rude" just to appease her fragile little ego. And she acted like she was the superior one all along. Then she resorted to rabbling on to discussing random things that wasn't even related to the question I originally asked...but I just listened. At the end, she asked me if I could give her my name so she could check the status of my application for me (I didn't even request this from her) and I was thinking H*** no. I bet she wanted to look me up and tell the Dean to reject me or something. But I politely said "No thanks but thanks for the offer." Then she just slammed the phone down and hung up on me like she was really angry I didn't let her know my personal information. After she hung up, I thought F*** you. I have never had an experience with any other medical school like this before. After this admissions cycle, I'm going to write a letter to the dean telling him or her how rude the lady was and how she discouraged me from continuing my application process here. I honestly think she should be fired. I can just imagine her doing this to all the thousands of other applicants who call. I'm an OOS applicant and I'm wondering if people in LA (or big cities in generally) really are this mean. I'm pretty disappointed that such an elite school attracts such low-level people to work for them.

Funny how professionalism is an essential quality for students but not staff :/

I mean, that is a kind of aggressive thing to call about. It would be easy to come across as trying to catch them in a lie or call them out somehow, so it's not really surprising that she acted as if you were attacking the integrity of the school: face it, you kind of were.

When I called the admissions office, I had a very pleasant experience. When I interviewed there, everyone I interacted with was kind and respectful. Sorry you had to experience that.

Now that I think of it, I guess I can see where you're coming from. I honestly just wanted to know which was correct, but I can see how it could sound like I'm trying to question the validity of the school. Thanks for helping me look at it from a different perspective. It made my day better 🙂

I don't think it was wise to call about that. Why would you call and ask this if you already applied? I am sure she overreacted but it sounds like you poked the bear that is all overworked admissions offices right now.

Yeah probably wasn't a great idea. She did seem kinda busy and put me hold in the beginning, so clearly they are very busy people who are probably pushed to the limits and ready to explode.....

And THIS post made my day better! I was worried I was just being a dick, myself. Thank you. \

I think we've got both sides now, no need to poke anymore bears on any side of the cave!

I originally thought you were being a dick, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized you do have a very good point, so no harsh feelings 😛. I think it's always important to be able to see things from others' perspective and I feel loads better after knowing that I should be more careful about what I ask about and to learn to not take things too personally...Thanks everyone for all of your support. It really made my day better. 🙂

Whole thing took 5 hours.

Hey! Looking through the earlier posts, it looks like you had an interview this week? (Congrats, BTW!!!) I was wondering if you might be able to give any details of the day? I can't seem to find an agenda or any real clue as to what I should be expecting. Are they still conducting the 20 minute one-on-one interview after the MMI? If anyone can give details on what to expect, I would greatly appreciate it!

Also, has anyone been placed with a student host? I'm interviewing on the 21st and I am yet to hear back...

Hey Elynn, if you haven't head back from your host. try to e-mail them again. Are you doing the afternoon interview?

Thank you! I actually decided to call in since I work about 10 minutes away and I wanted to see if I could make a meeting time. Congrats on your interview by the way hope it went well! 🙂

Thankfully I had a different experience than @Pink Panda . The receptionist was very polite, but hey that experience semi-prepared you for an MMI scenario! Great to know you kept your cool as much as possible

So there is a morning and an afternoon group, and I think both start with tour of the school (ish) by medical students (who were really really nice and explained a lot and really sold the school), then MMI in morning group, then the two groups met and had lunch while listening to a speaker/asking questions. Then the morning group left and the afternoon group did MMI.
I don't know how much I should say about MMI or what's posted, but basically it was MMI plus a twenty minute pretty casual (and fun) interview one on one with someone. Then that's it!

Thanks! I think I will go ahead and email the student hosting service today.

I'm in the morning... bright and early at 8am! Are you in the afternoon?

Awesome! Thanks for the info. I'm SO excited, but a little nervous. Getting basic details helps a ton! I'm so glad to hear that we don't show up and walk straight into the MMI!

I am in the afternoon session. Good luck to US !!

When did the interview begin for UCLA? They said on the website October to February but I noticed some people here already interviewed?

So looking at the UCLA website it seems that the earliest acceptance given is Jan 15. Is there any advantage then to interviewing earlier if both dates would be before jan 15? I could interview at UCLA in October, but pushing it to December allows me to combine with another trip to southern California. From an admissions standpoint would this be a bad move on my part?

Thanks for any input!

Congrats! Complete same day...hope my ship comes back around!

Good luck and have faith. I never would have guessed that I would get an II but I did, so I guess they really look at your app as a whole. Believe in yourself.

Is anyone else still waiting for a secondary? Primary complete June 16...🙁

I am..but I pretty much have settled with the fact they're probably not at all interested in me. Not sure how true this is, but I have heard they don't like taking their own undergrads so...=/

Yes, still waiting on a secondary here. I have accepted the possible reality that I will never get one.

They started last week, not sure why

Edit: Actually, because they said that at this point they have over 8000 applications. That may be why.
