2015-2016 University of Connecticut Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Medical schools normally accept 3x as many people as are seats available from what I have heard. I wonder if this is true for UConn, because they have about 75 IS seats and only around 200 interviews.

From what I've heard, most people who get in end up going, unlike other state schools so maybe they take that into consideration?

Was there a group interview with the Dean( Like previous years) or did the mock discussion replace that. Also did the 2 interviewers you had know everthing about your application? Thank you for your help!! This is my first choice school and I have an interview coming up very soon and I am very nervous.

The initial meeting with the Dean is reduced to make room for the mock discussion. It is very similar to previous years aside from the time aspect. The 2 interviewers had my AMCAS.

Try to be relaxed, confident, and most of all enthusiastic! You will do great. My advice is to read through your AMCAS and secondary the night before. I also found that making one or two bullet points ("talking points") per each activity was really helpful for me. During the interview I then had talking points to reference that I could apply to questions I had not prepared for or previously thought about. For example, the interviewer may ask, "what has been your greatest failure." I would wait 2-4 seconds, reply first by restating question (which gave me more time), and then recall an applicable idea/talking point from my activities. It ended up being a great response. 🙂

It is also my first choice and cannot wait until I hear!

Did you apply ED? Do you know how many people applied ED in your interview?

I did not apply ED. And I am not aware of anyone in my interview that did. I do not think it wise to apply ED unless you have an incredible MCAT/GPA.

I had at least two I knew of out of the eight in my interview group who applied ED.

According to MSAR UCONN interviews 50% of IS applicants. That is much higher than I was expecting

I recently interviewed at UConn. It was really fun and everybody was very friendly. They have a lot of good things going for them like TBL, SCP, and the addition of the Bioscience CT.

I agree - every single person there was approachable and helpful. I love their new team-based learning approach and SCP.

I was also complete around 2-3 weeks ago and haven't heard anything - not even a complete email. I know it's still early but UConn's a top choice for me. Does anyone have complete/II dates they would be able to share? Thank you 🙂

Complete 2 weeks ago. Not sure how quick of a turn around they have but hopefully I'll here something soon!
I have friends who have applied in Late July/Early August and have not heard anything from UConn yet, not even II.

Thanks for that.. I guess UCONN is slow with the II from what I've also seen in past threads.

That's unfortunate. I figured since it was a state school with very low OOS, they would have less applications overall and be more quicker in their process. I suppose not!

Not UConn. They tend to get a lot of applicants esp. since they are increasingly becoming more prestigious and have a lot great new changes like TBL.

Was the group interview hard? Did they ask any tricky questions during the group interview? Thanks for your time.

I wouldn't call it a group "interview"; it was just us going around the table introducing ourselves and talking about our hobbies for a few minutes.

I agree also it was cut short to fit in the mock TBL exercise. As a matter of fact, not everyone in my group interview had the opportunity to talk.

TBL stands for team based learning?

Does anyone know how uconn revisits apps with mcat updates? I finished my app and submitted my secondary in July, was complete July 24...but i had a future mcat date in amcas and my score was released on august 18. Just wondering when they will revisit my app and make a decision about II? I called admissions about this once but the lady I spoke to just assured me that my app would be looked at once the score was available to them, she didn't seem to know anything else about time frames. And at this point, its been over a month since the score came out. Anyone in a similar situation of having taken the mcat again after submitting your secondary? It's been dead silence from uconn since my complete e-mail in July...

Wait..Uconn sends complete emails? i never received one

Sorry, I meant the e-mail that confirmed payment for the secondary. I never received an official complete e-mail, only posted in the portal.

Does anyone know if they are receptive to post-secondary application updates? I recently got a new job in the medical field and wanted to update them but didn't quite know how to go about doing so...

I know several applicants who have applied to UCONN SOM pretty early in the cycle and did not hear back yet, and they are pretty qualified ...do not lose hope!

Yeah, I figured that my first interview would be at my state school but that was not the case! Still holding out hope for UCONN though!

Hi guys,

Just wanted to see if I shld call to ask about this or if it's normal. I submitted my secondaries in July, and online portal said "application complete at July XX." My letters of rec were sent about a month ago. Never received a "your file is complete" email which seems normal from this forum. But my status on the portal still says "application complete at July XX." Not sure if that's referring to my secondary being complete or my whole file. I just wanted to make sure my file was complete and all set. Thanks!

I don't believe there is a complete email.

Thanks! That's what people have also been saying. Does the portal status change though, once your file is complete? Mine stayed the same as what it was when the secondary was complete.

If your secondary didn't submit properly, the portal would still give you the option to submit the secondary. If this is the case for you, I'd email/call them.

any recent II's???? very quiet thread...
Yup, got it last week.

Congrats on the interview! When were you complete?

UCHC tends to have a reputation for out of state difficulty. Anyone have stats of percentage of the class these applicants make up? or perhaps percentage of non-traditional students?

I found this on their website:
Class of 2019 Medical School Profile

  • 98 students – includes seven M.D./Ph.D. candidates (56% women)
  • Average age: 23
  • 87% Connecticut residents
  • 45 undergraduate school programs represented – 35% UConn; 9% other Connecticut schools
  • 18% are underrepresented minorities
  • 88% majored in science and/or health-related topics as undergraduates

II! Complete 7/31, OOS, LizzyM ~ 72.

I have lived in CT for the last 6 years as an undergrad and then working, so that likely helped. I did claim residency for a different state on AMCAS though.

Is the entire thing a group interview, or are the personal/specific questions like "why do you want to be a doctor?" asked in a one-on-one setting?

I have mine tomorrow and it's my first traditional one!

The group interview is only at the beginning then you have activity and 2 individual interviews. You get asked why you want to be a doctor in the individual interviews
