2015-2016 University of Illinois Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Some of my partner's family lives near Madison. I've heard good things about it. UC isn't /bad/ per se....it's just... small? And far from everywhere.
Haha I guess we have opposite perspectives. I grew up in a small town and Madison is the largest city I have lived in. Unlike what I have experienced in Chicago and NYC, everyone is super friendly and outgoing. There is always something public to do whenever you are bored, and we have a great sense of community.

On topic: I was browsing the website and noticed that Urbana requires iClickers. Does this mean that lecture is required there. I remember being told that it wasn't when I interviewed at Chicago because I didn't fit into the seats at the lecture hall

And they're all fine cities where you'll get a good education and ample opportunities for research. I know people at all campuses and they each love it. Some people prefer/hate certain environments but it shouldn't affect your medical education.

That was kind of my whole point....UIC wouldn't have substandard education at one of the campuses. That just doesn't make any sense.

Read my post again - I didn't say anything about Peoria lacking in terms of hospital work. I guess what I meant by diverse patient population is in terms of ethnic and socioeconomic diversity in the patient population, not diversity in the treatments seen. Peoria really lacks in the Latino/Asian demographics.

Where did you get this 50% statistic from? People (like me) applied very early with the hopes of interviewing early (like me) with the intention of getting accepted post-interview (not me). Doing all of this fairly early gives you essentially a 100% chance of getting Chicago. If you read earlier in this thread, no one who requested Chicago was denied it (or at least posted about it) before Januaryish. I applied with the hopes of Chicago, and since at this point, I won't be getting Chicago, I don't plan on attending here even if I am ultimately accepted.

I would agree with you that people should not bother applying here if they don't want to do UPR if they aren't submitting their applications early. But many people who are interested in being placed in Chicago do apply early for this reason.

Also, man... you can't be comparing life in Peoria to Chicago with its 300,000 residents... Life in the 2 places is so different. And not to mention that Chicago has almost 10x the number of people living in it. And it's more of a cultural center in the Midwest than Peoria. And it's close to a large body of water. And it's got way better food. And on and on...
You're right; I'm sorry if I came across as combative. It's just frustrating that so many people (and I'm not including you in this statement) just automatically assume if you don't go to Chicago your education is worse.

They said they sent out all correspondence yesterday. No rejection yet but I can probably expect it tomorrow.

But didn't people who got status updates earlier this week include people with rejections? Don't give up, you might be a waitlist! Or even possibly an acceptance yet!

Thank you for the kind words but I have to know when to face the music. I'm just disgusted with myself.

So just to clarify, everyone who hasn't gotten a final decision will either get "Final Decision Made" with no additional correspondence, or the waitlist status tomorrow?

To all the people waiting with me for "decision pending" to change since interviewing in September/October... its been dreadful but we'll get through it ;;

Well I guess we're getting true P/F then...

Why are you disgusted with yourself? You've still had a strong showing with 3 waitlists! It's UIC's loss, not yours!

Just saw the email as well. Does that mean no rankings?

^ this was my only interview and I apparently botched it.

it could be worse. at this point i'm going to go to a DO school. I think it fits my personality better anyway and I'll be saving 25-30K

Oops...

I had four opportunities to get this right, which many people would kill for, and I still managed to botch it completely.
I'm with you on that. To be IS and get interviewed on the first day at a school with a 70% post-interview acceptance rate makes me feel absolutely horrible. 🙁

That's just so strange. I glanced at your MDapps and your app seems pretty good...do you think it was the interview?

Just like bananafish I had 4 interviews and none of them landed an acceptance so I do suspect it's my interview skills which is frustrating because I really do not feel that I lack interpersonal skills. Granted, I am introverted so I don't do well with small talk but in a one-on-one typical interview setting I'm generally fine. The biggest thing that I can think of is that I smile and laugh a lot when talking to people (I have a super bubbly personality) so that might have come across as over eager or too childish? (the fact that I often get mistaken for a 12 year old doesn't help either...) If it is my interview skills, it sucks because that's not something I can physically show improvement on if I have to reapply. 🙁

All these kids talking about placements and here I am still in decision pending. I wanna slap people. Compassionately

While I agree with your standpoint to a certain degree, there's probably a better way to get your point across than calling others "kids".

Everyone please don't be down on yourself if you haven't been accepted yet esp if you're still in undergrad or this is your first application cycle. If I told you all my full story you'd probably think I was a fool for still trying. But look I've been accepted after the third go around. Please don't be hard on yourselves. If you received interviews they saw something in you. Please stay encouraged & don't let ANYTHING stop you from becoming a doctor. I'm rooting for you all esp @bananafish94

So I got the rejection letter today but I was invited to apply to the Post-baccalaureate Admission Program that includes guaranteed admission for 2017. I'm doing it! Whatever it takes to get there!

Best of luck everyone!! Everyone's journey is different. Have faith and be encouraged!

Thank you. Maybe someday it could happen for me. I'm really happy you got in, you clearly deserve it immensely.

I wonder what we did wrong with UIC. We both have decent apps...
Honestly, I think I'm a just a waitlist candidate by nature. I don't think any of the schools I interviewed at ever had a serious intention of accepting me. I don't have any data to back that up, it's just a hunch. Yours truly baffles me though. Especially given that you got your interview so early, I really don't know. It's a mystery.

I am curious about this too. What are they planning on putting on residency applications? I would be shocked if it was true pass/fail without internal rankings.

Well sarcasm isn't for everyone.

Anyway, cheers to us pending kids.

I use "kids" all the time in the same way you did and similarly get called out on it. Kind of like how I use "guys" to refer to a group of people of any gender. Semantics.

Anyway, in an effort to make this post constructive, I just wanted to wish everyone on the waitlist good luck in the April 30/May 2 storm on the horizon. As a reapplicant, I understand rejection and the pain of hanging in purgatory, but in the end, if the odds aren't in your favor this year, it's amazing what experiences and insight a gap year can bring. Here's hoping that I see some of you on campus (or feel your presence from another campus) in August!

Did you get a final decision update on your application status page?

Can someone please link or pm the URL of the Chicago campus accepted student FB page? Can't seem to find it

I just don't understand, from what you've said it seems like you're a good interviewer and you have a good application. None of this makes any sense. I'll be shocked if you don't at least get accepted off the waitlist.

After being decision pending for so long, I am somewhat convinced I won't even get one of these letters in the mail and will instead hang in infinite limbo
