2015-2016 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
MD. Honestly, I'm a pretty middle of the road student so I'm kind of surprised! But I do have two years of nursing under my belt and it seems like they're changing their approach to look for more "well-rounded" applicants. 3.7/3.8sGPA, 513 MCAT.

Any thoughts on using the optional "extra info" space as a "why Michigan" essay? I have some compelling reasons that are not addressed elsewhere on the application. Thanks!
I think Michigan has enough essay prompts to get a feel for me, so I wrote one sentence about my SO attending UM Law currently.

From U of M staff communication:

More facts about this year’s 2015 incoming class:

•5,726 people applied for a spot in this year’s class. Only 538 made it to the interview stage – which was an even more selective round than last year.
•Nearly 56 percent of the 170 students starting medical school at U-M this month come from Michigan, with the rest coming from 24 other states
•55 of them attended U-M as undergraduates, with the rest graduating from 12 other Michigan institutions and 57 out-of-state institutions.
•Nearly 56 percent are women, and 15.3 percent are members of groups underrepresented in medicine.
•Nearly 60% of incoming students have biological, natural or physical science backgrounds. But the rest come from many diverse fields including engineering, business, economics, humanities, policy and the arts.
•More than 55 percent received some form of financial aid.
•9 students will pursue both an M.D. and Ph.D. degree through the Medical Scientist Training Program. Three who already hold dental degrees will train in oral & maxillofacial surgery. Many others may choose to pursue a second degree at other U-M schools, through any one of the eight dual-degree programs open to medical students.
•The students range in age from 20 to 36, with the average at 24.3 years.

Ahh congrats!! So excited for you. And thanks for keeping us all in the loop! 🙂

Hmmm maybe they meant that Mondays will be the day that the committee sits down and decides who gets interviews? Not the day that they actually send them out..?! Either way I'm glad to see some MD-only movement! Congrats @lizzylee

Thanks! I'm nervous and stoked and...now trying to figure out logistics of travel.

Detroit (DTW) airport is only 1/2 hour from Ann Arbor (lots of shuttles that go back and forth). Also, if you are on the Megabus route, there is a dropoff in Ann Arbor. PM if you need further assistance (live in Ann ARbor).

Amtrak also goes through AA as well

I noticed that the essays for this school are not capped on the secondary essay, although they say do not exceed 1500 characters. Is it really bad to do 1600? I'm finding it impossible to get another 100 characters out... I already cut my essay in half.

Keep working, you should stay under the maximum. It will make your essay stronger and your reviewers less annoyed.

Does anyone's applicant portal have two sections for University of Michigan School of Medicine that show up? My first one says complete but my second one says not submitted and I'm wondering what the deal there is...

Yep, it's a glitch in the system, no need to worry.

Yes. I have the same thing. Earlier in this thread, though, someone addressed this issue and said as long as one of them is complete you are fine.

Thanks folks...I had skimmed the thread but I guess I missed that part. Appreciate the info, though! Fewer things to worry about 🙂

Congratulations to all the II recipients! The wait might not be long for the rest of us, UMich Admissions just tweeted about #UMichMedMonday - more IIs will be sent out on 8/3 at 1pm.
Hopefully, haha

Congrats everyone who got an II!! How exciting!

Embarrassing confession: I'm still sitting on that passion essay.

I just submitted this last night. I'm a michigan resident. My stats are kinda low for here (LizzyM ~70) but I have heavy research a few other unique (I think) ECs that will hopefully get me some love. :nailbiting:

Mine was 250 words but went over 1500 characters (spaces included). Hopefully it's not a big deal.

For the additional uploads, what type of stuff can be uploaded? I'm assuming that if we can upload another lor, but what other information is alright?

If you have an additional LOR that you want to send, send it through the appropriate avenues. It won't carry much weight if you're uploading it yourself.

I think I uploaded my updated transcript.

It says I'm complete, but none of my recs are in yet (still waiting for 1 last one). They won't review my app w/o any recs right? I think they are a pretty strong part of my application.

technically you're the one who followed the instructions lol
I got concerned after seeing you post and double checked >_> I am technically correct but since they didn't or a hard cap on it I'll doubt they'll be upset with your way either.

Secondary Submitted! Hope you show me some love Michigan, you're my top choice!

Can you receive an II without all LORs being submitted?
