2015-2016 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ouch is right! Hope is quickly dwindling for one of those OOS offers. Sad, because I really love the curriculum and vision of this school, easily in my top 3!

Edit: while the rough % (based on tracker #apps, so probably slightly lower #of secondaries submitted) of OOS applicants extended interview offers is about 7.3%, with the remaining ~54 it's about 1.2%... Yikes.

Yea, it'd be pretty odd to update the tracker today and then send out more IIs after. Looks like we're settled in for another 2-3 weeks.

Wow. I didn't know Michigan was going to be done with sending out interview invites possibly before November ends..

Sorry if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere on SDN that Michigan automatically interviews those above a certain stats--I recall it was like MCAT over 36 or something. I know I saw this somewhere on SDN but didn't know if it was true..maybe it was just a rumor?

I indeed got my interview before even submitting my secondary. It wasn't immediate though - I think about a week or two after receiving the secondary (and before my letters were sent in). I assume that in this time they read my personal statement, so not quite just MCAT/GPA, though I'm sure that also played a big role.

I was complete July 3rd, so I know the odds of them coming back to me are decreasing with each passing Monday
+1

I've read the same about other top schools, no one knows for sure. To me it seems more like a rumor that people keep spreading about schools with high averages.

They stopped giving automatic interviews a few years back. The admissions department has actually moved away from relying heavily on stats.

Ah f*ck. I was looking through my secondary today (because I'm neurotic) and noticed that I somehow checked that I had received a Fulbright. I definitely have never received a Fulbright, and I don't remember checking that box at all! I would never lie about that kind of thing. I call them to clarify, because I don't want them thinking I have a Fulbright when I don't, but now I'm just afraid they're going to think I'm a fraud. I really don't know how that got on there. F*ck. I loved this school at the interview and I really hope this doesn't screw me! They were really nice about it and said they'd just make a note, but I'm so afraid they're going to think I lied or something. @Goro is this really bad?

I got an II with a MCAT of a 34 (and a prior score of a 26). They do look at more than stats, but OOS have a higher stat threshold per their tracker from the last few years (at the end of the cycle, IS MCAT average was a 34.5, OOS average was a 36). Brother got an IS interview 2 years ago with a 33 MCAT. THey like to have a class of about 50/50 IS to OOS. That I think plays a larger role in their II selections.

Want to add that I know a handful of students that have sub-30 MCAT scores. They do focus more on compiling a class of talented/unique individuals vs. stats.

I can attest to this. I'm a Sub-30, completed sometime mid July and ii first week of Sept for Dec 4th. I felt very lucky and grateful to hear back. URM/disadv. applicant though. Also, substantial research. I was blown away that in Sept. I got a Dec 4th date. So I assume by now they've filled up til Jan/Feb if not even March because the tracker has gone up much faster since.

As long as you haven't gotten a rejection though...there's still hope!!

They interview through Jan, and only 1 date I see at the beginning of Feb. They finish up pretty early.

Definitely a rumor.

Source: 522 on MCAT, no II

Oh wow that's an early cycle. What's the timeline to hear acceptances? do they come out biweekly or at random times? Would you happen to know?

They seem to have Adcom meetings semi-monthly. My brother interviewed in Dec, and they released all Dec decisions Jan 15, probably due to the holidays.

Question: If we are to get an II, they will both email us and update that page where it says "checklist," right? Or am I not looking in the right place?

There's not much love for Texas applicants. Texas didn't even make the top 10 states under "Interview Offers by State", so there are definitely less than 8 out of 186 TX apps that got an interview from here.

That is probably because they know Texas folks have such a cheap and sweet deal as IS. Would take a superstar that is looking for a full ride somewhere else to get their attention. That is a theory that is bandied about here on SDN, and makes total sense.

Were we supposed to complete the interview completion form right away? Just got a "friendly reminder" that they're waiting on it....I put it off thinking that I had until four weeks before my interview to complete it.

The II said it was due 1 month before interview date (mine isn't until Dec). Whoa, I guess I better get cracking on it, don't want to be seen as not responsive, but geez, why give a due date, then nag about it before hand?? Those of us working fulltime, and traveling for interviews are not just sitting around, watching TV or playing video games. Wish we could nag schools about their time frames, ha ha ha

No, please don't do the same mistake I did and just get it over done with. The email said something about it being in our best interest to complete it promptly and that completing it later might put me at a disadvantage. I'm at the 6th week mark for the reference....

Why would submitting it now versus 4 weeks before hurt us? Don't they review our applications again after our interview and then make their decision? We already got II's, don't see how earlier essays will change our chances.

Well ****, I grew up in TX but I don't have the prereqs for any TX school other than Baylor. I'm a WA resident now though... I really hope that isn't playing against me.

If you're currently a WA resident...you're a WA resident.

lol I got the same email, although my interview is in 2 weeks...

Someone I know who got in to the MSTP last year just wrote a few sentences rather than getting close to the 250 word limits, so I'm just gonna do that and get this thing over with.

If you're currently a WA resident...you're a WA resident.
Since I graduated from a Texas high school, some schools there consider that similar to a current resident candidate for the ties to the area.

They make you go through a series of questions to determine residency when they give you a II at Baylor. You are either a resident or not but you can't be a resident of WA now but also be considered a TX resident at the same time because of high school. People can lose it once they start college under some conditions.

Does anyone know what time we're supposed to hear on the 15th?

Pretty sure midnight after the 14th. They'll tweet out the time though.

If you are a U of M undergrad, they lure you to some place on campus, and give it to you in person!! The perks of being a U of M undergrad.

True story: My brother was out of the country for 2 months when he got an email from the admissions director to come to his office the next to discuss an issue with his U of M application 2 years ago. Our Mom was monitoring his email, and contacted the director about him being out of the country, and unable to address whatever issue arose.
Needless to say, our Mom found out he was accepted a day before it was announced (probably helped that she was staff at U of M hospital).
Ha! I've seen your brother's story on here before. I'm just wondering for those of us not in Ann Arbor, should we be waiting till midnight?

11 more invites just went out according to the twitter. Any idea about when they generally give out the last IIs?

Usually folks report getting the last II in Jan for the last Feb dates, but I think Dec is pretty much the wrap up for the Jan dates and the last one in Feb.

How many do they accept to fill a class of 176? They tweeted that 170 admits will be notified in 3 days!

Not 170 admits. It is admission for the 170th class at UM medical school.
