2015-2016 University of Michigan Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can anyone who interview talk a little about the process. seems MMI plus the 30 minute interview is gonna be overwhelming. How to prepare?

I didn't think it was overwhelming at all, my 1 on 1 interviews were very conversational and laid back. Just know your application and why you want to go to Michigan and you'll be fine. As for the MMI, there isn't really a good way to prepare since you won't know what they're going to give you but I didn't think it was too scary. The two minute prep time was enough for all of the stations for me.

Anyone know generally what a person's chances of acceptance are if they are deferred?

Are they wait listing people? It seems like maybe they're just accepting and deferring.

Accepted! Very cool notification (I accidentally ignored it for the whole day lol). Thought I bombed MMI, so pleasantly surprised!

Accepted MSTP and we didn't get any cool notification 🙁 (Well, not that an acceptance email isn't already cool in and of itself. Certainly not complaining!)

That's weird... why would they not give it to everyone? Granted there was a short personalized portion, but still

Thanks! I am kinda freaking...3 weeks left :\

So all I've received is that email with the link...is there supposed to be something where we say "I'll take the acceptance"? Maybe there will be something in the mail?

You'll get an official snail mail acceptance letter within a couple of weeks, but you don't need to do anything to officially accept the offer. They say they assume you want to hold onto it unless you tell them otherwise, and there is no deposit (yay!).

Thank you! It's just that without something concrete, like a letter, I sometimes feel like I'm dreaming and made up the acceptance email in my head. I go back and watch it occasionally to make sure it's real...

Just got my interview invite and I'm literally dancing right now.

Stats for the interested: ~66 LizzyM, OOS, non-trad with lots of various EC.

I love you Michigan!!
Are you URM? if you don't mind me asking. Thanks

Any deferred applicants sending in a letter of intent with updates? Would it help at this point?

Am I the only one who thinks these types of questions are incredibly rude? Ha probably not the right place to hop on a pedestal...

A lot of schools actively recruit URM and send out those kinds of emails, so it was a legitimate question.

Admission Tracker updated today. 171/350 offers already! Also, I would say they're pretty much done offering IIs.

why do you think that? I have a friend there now who says she didn't get an interview offer until january

i am URM and don't find that question rude...there are somewhat different 'paths' in evaluating different demographics, especially now that schools are leaning towards a more holistic approach where being URM makes you more relatable to underserved populations and provides one with those specific experiences...so I understand why people wonder. Stats, EC's, personal history, they are all things that Admissions will consider before they say yes.

I seem to notice offense taken more often when the person wasn't a URM and was asked if they were....woops

I'm basing my assessment on their latest tracker. 383/387 OOS and 132/142 IS interviews already offered. I suspect that the later IIs come from those who withdraw their IIs thus opening up interview slots which would likely occur in the later part of the cycle.

Sure, I absolutely respect/understand/agree with what you're saying. I also completely agree with the perspective of the admissions committees. That being said, it seems like the only time that question is asked is when someone with a below average LizzyM is invited to interview at a fabulous school like UM...But again this probably isn't the place to have this conversation and I doubt the subscribers to this thread want to be spammed with updates that include nothing more than my personal opinion...hah sorry everyone!

Looks like the deferrals are real deferrals after all. 61 IS kids interviewed until the end of October and only 33 were accepted.

Is it odd that Michigan is giving out so many more OOS offers than IS offers?
55% of the OOS offers have been given and only 33% of the IS offers. Only 20% of the total acceptances were to IS. Also, only 25% of IS who interviewed got in while 36% of OOS who interviewed got in.

Or am I just reading too much into this haha

I think that state schools in general need to give out a lot more offers to OOS students than IS students if they want the mix to be 50/50 b/c OOS students are a lot less likely to attend. So they might be holding off on giving out IS offers in order to prevent IS overenrollment

THis is correct. On twitter a few years ago, they stated they interviewed 200 IS, offered 100 acceptances to get 80 to matriculate. Getting into a top 10 school at IS rates for Michigan residents is hard to beat. Out of State is more competitive for U of M to fill the class, as the tuition is about the same for all the top 20 schools, even the privates.

FWIW, my brother's class from 2 years ago was over enrolled (they have 177 students). That was the second year of over enrollment. Probably why they now only interview 530 instead of 600+.

You have to take into account that not all those that hold II's have interviewed yet. I know that 61 IS people interviewed by October 30, of which 33 have been accepted, making it around 55%. For the reference, this is much smaller than the 75% to 80% of applications that we usually see in the first and second batches in past years. Makes me hopeful that those of us that are still deferred, are in fact deferred for later decision (in past years, a deferral basically meant a rejection).

Also, the number of actual interviewees for OOS is much smaller than the number you see on the tracker. Many OOS people have been canceling their interviews and they do count them twice on the tracker. I know at least three people got pushed into my interview date alone because of cancellations. I know that happened to @Rainbow Zebra as well.

Last thing: the number of acceptances for IS is likely to rise, like it did last year. They enrolled 95 IS students last year with 120 acceptances. They usually aim for 85 and I imagine them accepting around 110 this year.

Edit:
Acceptance Statistics for September IS interviewees: 62.5%
Acceptance Statistics for October IS Interviewees: 48.6%

If you all couldn't tell already, I'm really trying to gauge my chances in getting off this deferral list lol.

I'm in the same boat! At this point I just really hope to have a decision in December, waiting until March would be torturous.

Me Too! I missed the email while I was at work. Didn't see it till the next morning. Then I understandably got excited.

This might seem dumb to ask, but just want the feedback first:

I got accepted into my number one choice. I don't think I want to spend the money to go to the UMich interview or take someone's potential interview spot at UMich. Should I call admissions or is it a requirement to go to the interview once scheduled?

I don't want to step on any toes, and though this was a dream school/far reach/top choices, my #1 is my in-state. Just wondering if passing on the interview would be viewed as rude/bad. I just don't want to interview and risk taking a spot I will most likely turn down.

Congratulations on the acceptance. I don't think that calling and declining your spot is considered rude. Just the reverse - taking up an interview spot when you know you won't be attending seems wrong (IMHO). Of course, I could just be praying to get that spot!!!

I cancelled quite a few interviews once I was accepted to a place I really liked, and the admissions offices were very understanding!

Please turn it down so some other worthy candidate can take your place. Congrats on getting your dream school.

Interesting thing I noted, the tracker changed substantially from 10/16 to 11/17 for interviews:

October Tracker Interviews offered 465/528: IS 121/176, OOS 344/352 (10 left for OOS)

November Tracker Interviews offered 498/528: IS 132/142, OOS 366/387 (21 left for OOS)

Substantial shift to more interviews for OOS.

Trend for last 3 years from tracker data I kept a copy of shows fewer interviews needed to fill the class of 170:

for 2016 142 IS interviews for 100 IS acceptances, 387 OOS interviews for 250 OOS acceptances
In 2015 160 IS interviews for 115 IS acceptances, 381 OOS interviews for 255 OOS acceptances
In 2014 171 IS interviews for 107 IS acceptances, 413 OOS interviews for 272 OOS acceptances

They might be controlling it more tightly due to excessive acceptances in the previous years. Didn't Michigan ask some people to defer last year?

Last couple of years had overenrollment, and with the new curriculum, there are more folks moving into clinical earlier, so more folks on the floors/clinics.

If we're in-state, then chances for II are slim to none by now since they've practically run out of slots, right?

Down to 10 available as of a week or so ago. Per Twitter 14 II went out on 11/23 (didn't distinguish between IS/OOS).
Not many IS folks would turn down an II, so the pickins' are pretty slim now for Michiganders, much better for the OOS still waiting.

Please turn it down so some other worthy candidate can take your place. My brother got an interview 2 years ago with only 2 days notice to take the place of a declined interview slot. This was his dream school. No harm, no foul, it won't reflect badly on you (not showing up with no notice would reflect badly though). Congrats on getting your dream school.

Thanks for all the replies y'all! I will be calling sometime today to pass on my interview slot and hopefully an SDNer will end up with it 🙂 Best of luck to everyone!!

They actually accepted 120 IS students last year. Though the tracker says it anticipates 100 IS acceptances, this number could rise (especially after all financial aid offers are given out in March) as IS students withdraw their applications for other schools. They updated last year's tracker to accept 120 IS students in December. I am hoping that will be the case this year as well since that would give us ISers really high chances of acceptances (if they were accepting 120 out of 142 interviewees total for example).

The odds for us ISers hasn't been too good so far....48.6% for October interviewees is unprecedented (18 acceptances for 37 IS interviewees). Usually its around 70-80 percent for first and second batch people.

Go Blue!! Beat OSU!!! 🙂
Or not. I'm happy as a Spartan, but living in A2 was hard on Saturday. Hopefully U of M will have a better defense next year. It was just plain ugly to watch it.
