2015-2016 University of Pennsylvania (Perelman) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
II received last week and still giddy with excitement whenever I think about it. Looking forward to meeting some of you!

If you interview for MSTP, but are not accepted, are you still eligible for MD-only?

If I remember correctly from scheduling, interviews start next week! Good luck to you all!

Dumb question time. I'm Canadian and I'm pretty sure Canada is outside of the US. Do I answer 'No' for activities outside the US, even though technically all my activities are outside the US? What do you guys think?

Sorry, its been exam time for the first and second years. To be honest, there isn't anything that I have disliked specifically about Penn so far. The only gripes I have are about medical school in general.

For example: I'm not a fan of the touchy, feely classes that we have. But every medical school has them, and I would dislike them everywhere. At most they are once a week, but nearing clinics they are about once every month. They don't take up too much time. Some people love these classes, but to each their own.

Sorry if it seems like a cop out answer, but its completely true. Any problem I have at Penn, I would have at any medical school in the country. Penn does really well at the things that matter the most.

First year here. Want to echo what Trino said. It's really difficult to find any glaring problems, at least so far. This is partly due to the way Penn gives a reasonable amount of flexibility in what you do. Don't like lectures? Perfect, just watch them online. Don't like touchy-feely stuff? Great, it's only once a week. You do like diving into the touchy feely stuff? There are extra opportunities to talk about these issues with faculty or your classmates.

Ok...back to the studying. Oh and congrats to all those with II, it'll be great to see all those dark suits parading through shortly :welcome:!

And to those still waiting, :luck: and keep those chins up, the cycle is young yet!

I think you will be automatically considered for MD admission if you are rejected from the MSTP.

II @2:32 pm today EST. Complete on... not positive. But I got their secondary on 7/2 and completed it that day, my Recs, MCAT, etc were all done well before this date. Stats, 3.99 gpa @ ~100 ranked state school, 99+%ile MCAT and kind of Eh ECs, but lots of research. Best of luck to everyone

Nah Penn's one of the few MSTPs that doesn't do that. If you're rejected, it's over for both.

Misread what he asked. Ya if you're interviewed and rejected you're rejected. But I think if you're rejected pre-interview, you are considered for MD-only admission.

You're rejected for both pre-interview too:

"can i be considered for both the md-phd and md?
No. AMCAS requires applicants to indicate a program choice of MD or MD-PhD, and this is also true for Penn."

Does anyone know how many applicants Penn accepts?

Guess I need to learn a little more about the school I attend haha. Thanks for the info. Sorry for spreading misinformation!

Thanks- source?
I have not been able to find the information

They keep this info on lock down. But I went to a recruiting event once and they shared some of this info to current students last year. These stats are just from what I remember, so take it with a grain of salt. I suspect their yield will be quite high this year given the new medical school space. But this shouldn't discourage you from applying; stats help but aren't everything - Penn loves other things more than stats like unique backgrounds and those that care about social justice.

Got an II yesterday! 3.7/36. Wow. I have no idea why a school like this would be interested in me. I thought I was throwing my money away by applying here.

Congrats 🙂 Be confident in yourself and trust that you have something special that Penn is looking for; the admissions committee doesn't make mistakes! Look forward to seeing you soon at your interview!

According to US News (Paid subscription)

Applied: 4865
Interviewed: 908
Accepted: 239
Enrolled: 157

Might be too much info, but I figured I would once again put this subscription to good use. 🙂

Does USNWR have this for every school?

FYI you're not supposed to divulge privileged information (i.e., behind a firewall) publicly like this, so be careful. I wouldn't go so far to say it's "illegal," but it's definitely not allowed by most forum rules.

To answer the other question, USNWR has the accepted number for every school that reports to USNWR for rankings. So some of the state schools who don't care to be ranked (e.g., SUNY Downstate) don't send in their info and nothing will appear even if you have the subscription.

Hello folks...... I'm Dr. Dachshund.... a current Penn Med student. Have any questions, let me know...... Just remember, if you apply to Pitt, and you have really good MCAT and grades, they won't invite you to an interview as they figure you'll get accepted to better schools....

This seems odd to me. I was under the impression that Pitt is a top 20 school. According to MSAR, their median stats are 3.9/36. Am I missing something here?

Is he saying Penn wouldn't invite you if you apply to Pitt?...

1) I find it hard to believe this person goes to Penn
2) He/she is saying that Pitt won't invite you to interview if you've been accepted to "better schools" aka Penn or if you're just "too good" an applicant.

Okay DoctorDachshund, is this jab at another school really necessary? First of all, it's about time to get down off your high horse. Just because Penn is ranked higher does not make it a "better school". It's a different school with different interests, but neither school superior to the other. Both schools are accredited and Pitt is a top 20 school; it doesn't get much better than that. Also, I'm sure Pitt invites whomever they see would fit into their school and are definitely not as petty as you make it sound. I would bet you weren't invited to interview there for different reasons.

Edit: corrected my assumptions about gender of poster

Yeah, I was pretty confused about this as well. I didn't apply to Pitt, but I have a few friends that did, and I know that both of them got/have interviews at both schools, so I'm gonna call BS on this as well.

Edit: If you look through this person's posting history (I super don't want to do my work), it's full of anti-Pitt posts. I don't understand why this person hasn't been banned for literally attacking a medical school. Like lolwut roflcopter.

Did anyone who spent a significant part of their childhood/teenage years overseas include that under "global activities"? Not sure if it is appropriate...

I did. However I prefaced it with "I grew up in a different country so it isn't really a global experience for me" or something like that.

Anyone know if UPenn is receptive to ITA emails?

Give it a shot. Can't hurt you if you word it properly. On another note: how has everyone liked their interviews so far?
