2015-2016 University of Tennessee Health Science Center Application Thread

Hi all, FYI- I received the secondary today after it had to be sent from someone in the admissions office's personal school email address (never went through when sent from the adcom address), apparently all the applicants with Vanderbilt email addresses did not receive it because of some IT problem but enough of them had called that they grabbed our names and sent us an email. So if you are waiting on one, it may not be a bad idea to check and call because some kinds of email addresses, and it looks like more so with school email addresses, ARE having problems with getting things through! good luck!

I second this! And the Vanderbilt IT department said it had something to do with our emails being sent to the quarantine? They gave me a method for checking this, so PM me and I'll help anyone out who needs it!

Wondering if you guys are currently reading or can recommend any good books, novels on the subject of medicine, hospital, medical ethics, alternate medicine etc., that I can read? I read "Doctor's" by Erich Segal when I was a kid and liked it.

I've been reading quite a few books on health care reform in order to "prepare" for some interview questions that I'm sure will be coming. Health Care Reform and American Politics is a good one, as well as Innovator's Prescription. I was iffy on Ben Carson's book but I've been told he presents some pretty interesting arguments and has some unique perspective.

Thanks, I will check those out. Appreciate your response.

Any OOS received a secondary yet? I was verified July 29, but I've only received the we've received your application email.

Is receiving a secondary from UT a good sign of likely receiving an interview invite since they actually review somewhat thoroughly your application before sending them?

I don't know anyone who got a secondary that didn't get an interview last year.

I got mine about a week ago and sent it Friday. I just got an 'application complete' today.

If you don't mind me asking, what are your stats? And when were you verified? I'm starting to get worried about not hearing anything by this point.

I'm not who you were asking, but I am an OOS and have not received a secondary yet. I contacted Diane Harris in Admissions and have sent in updates to UTHSC to help my application. They constantly review applications, so they may just be looking at yours a little more closely. If you haven't received any news yet, I'm sure it should be coming soon.

Chillax everyone, interviews don't even start until the first week of October. I know the app process is stressful but people that get their secondaries early may not be sent an interview until later in the process or vice versa.

cGPA 3.40 and sGPA 3.30 with a 512 MCAT score (definite upward trend after personal issues one year, all A's in my upper bio/psych classes such as Biochemistry and Endocrinology). Over 100 hours volunteering at a hospice and a lot of shadowing multiple doctors. I work in a bio land and a psychology lab and I'm currently completing experiments in both (no papers yet). I also do side stuff with international students. I'm kind of an average candidate.

September 25th looks like their standard start date for IIs.

It's weird I've been to 4 interviews so far and UTHSC hasn't even begun to send out IIs yet. But they do seem to have lots of interview dates so they don't seem crunched for time.

Any reapplicants here that interviewed last year? Is it a small group, typically? I've been to some that had 4 or 5 applicants and some that had dozens.

Mine was a fairly small group, less than 10 people

My interview day had 8 people. They said that the number of people increases as they get further into the interview season though.

Hey guys. First time applicant. Just got my mcat score back yesterday, August 22nd test taker. My app was already verified in the beginning of august. Does anyone know when I should expect to receive a secondary if they like me? IS btw

No, from what I've heard they usually send out IIs and secondaries later in the afternoon. Fingers crossed for y'all (and myself of course 😉)! But if you got a secondary you should get an II, just a matter of when!

Got it at noon of the first day! Fingers crossed!

Oh nice! I feel like everyone I've known has gotten stuff from them around 3 or 4.

Been hammering F5 on this thread and my email all day. Heart jumps every time campus dining emails me another reminder that they still serve food.

The first interview is a week from Monday! they have to send out invites today!

So no ones gotten one yet?? Nelson Strother came to our school about a week ago and he said they were running a little late in the process this year so just keep being patient!

Just received an email with UT school of medicine in the subject. I know that's not the name but I still jumped. Ended up being UT Houston finally acknowledging my application.

I have a question is it true that re-applicants are usually pushed to later II dates? despite turning the re-application earlier?

So I gave them an in the area notification early this week and they confirmed I got the interview for that date. They said they would send the confirmation email "later in the week" when they start sending the first invites, but I never got it so I guess that means they didn't actually send any II's this week.

Congrats! Maybe they'll send some this weekend. That'd be good.

Maybe so! I used to think adcoms never sent anything on weekends, but I have been proven wrong by a couple of them.

Eh, somewhat. Re-apps will only have one interview while first time applicants will have two.

Edit: By the way for everyone banking on the first interview invites, they send them within a week notice so stop looking at your email and just try to relax as much as possible.

5/8 interviewees at my interview date in November last year were re-applicants, so re-applicants aren't always put last.

Would you care to elaborate on the whole first time applicants having two interviews? I haven't heard of that.
