2015-2016 University of Tennessee Health Science Center Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
from all the schools I've been reading about on here, interview dates and secondary complete dates have been scattered allllllllll over the place haha. But hey Thpinky, keep your fingers crossed that we do get interviews together :cigar: you too medhopeful82

any information for acceptance rate of II from previous years?

Any advice on what kinds of questions to expect in the interview (if I get one)?

You'll have two interviews, one is more personal and the other is more academic in nature. The personal interview may have an ethical question, how you handle school, personal activities, etc. The academic interview is open file I believe and pertains more to your application.

So Tri is correct about all of that but the Academic (at least in my interview) had a ton of ethical questions ... infact my interviewer spent the majority of it asking ethical questions in senario form. So the personal might have one or two but the Academic might have more ethical questions.

Best of luck

As you can see, it'll vary based on who you interview with. My personal had one long ethical question and a few sundry personal questions. My academic interviewer was mainly interested in my research so we chatted about that for a while. All in all, they were both very conversational.

If you don't mind, what were the ethical questions like? Was there the typical "Who would you choose to save..."?

Mine was like a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book where he kept adding a new element to the story to see how I would react. Essentially, it was a question as to how to address potential cases of racism in the hospital. I had to "play" a doctor dealing with a racist/homophobic nurse.

I had one about what I would do if I found my friend cheating on an exam in medical school. That one has been very common on my interview journey... I think 4 of my interviews asked me that question.

I also think I had a question or two on active euthanasia.

I have yet to get a "who would you save" question in any of my interviews thankfully; never have been fond of those.

+1 to the cheating friend question

I did not get asked that question and I actually had that happen in an exam I was in. I did not witness the cheating, because the student was sitting many rows behind me. Other students did, and reported the culprit. He did not get an IA because the school thought eyewitness testimony was an insufficient burden of proof, but it was something of a minor scandal in the class.

I emailed them to ask for an update (because I was dying) and they were very nice! They said they plan to interview me but do not have an exact date yet.... Let's hope they send out a big wave of IIs soon

Once you get a secondary, you are guaranteed an II. Sadly when you get the secondary doesn't seem to correlate with when your interview will be

someone who was completed after me got an interview invite today too. Still no invite here 🙁

Has anyone heard back with a decision yet? When I interviewed they mentioned that the committee met at the end of October but I haven't heard anything.

Did they ask questions about reading any medical journal at the interview?

In my experience, no. But every interviewer is different. I don't know why they would ask that question though. I guess you could always offer up that information if you think it makes you look better or something.

No lol. I was wondering because I was gonna start reading it if they ask lol

Any new II's this afternoon??
None that I have heard. I'm sure they're constantly sending out interviews, but it doesn't seem that way because the majority of their applicants aren't on this thread.

Ohh okay. Is there another general Tennessee thread on here?

I'm sure there have been some that we don't hear of but also UTHSC is known to send out IIs for only a couple days or a week before the interview date

I got an II very late last night, kind of as a surprise to me. It's for Nov. 11, next week 🙂 So yeah, they can give you less than a week's notice. No complaints here!
Congrats!! Do you mind sharing your stats?

Anyone receive the survey email? She did mention they could be sent as late as Monday..

I too was also told the letters should be coming around this time. Haven't gotten the survey or a letter either.

On my interview day, Diane said she would email us to let us know the survey/letter was on its way. She said that would probably go out today, but I haven't gotten anything.

forgot to mention that I got an II last week. I was wondering how they choose the order of who to interview because me and someone I know were both completed mid-October (which is pretty late already) and the other person got an II one week before me. And goodluck to whoever is interviewing soon!

Most schools interview the candidates that they want the most first so congrats on getting an II! I'm still waiting...

Nelson told me they tend to front load their acceptances, so they probably interview people they want the most, earlier.

Just got the email from Diane saying my survey (and thus decision) was on the way!

Saw that. Did she say how quickly the actual acceptance would come after the survey?
