2015-2016 University of Tennessee Health Science Center Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Would you care to elaborate on the whole first time applicants having two interviews? I haven't heard of that.
First time you interview will be with two different people. One is open file grades wise and the other is closed. For me, I went to Memphis interviewed there open file and then a few days later interviewed in Chattanooga where I lived. Others I met in Memphis that day did both there interviews that same day.
I have heard that re-applicants chosen to interview only interview once and usually for a longer time. We had a re-applicant in our group and that's the process he told us he went through that day.

Oh. Well that's interesting. Are they pretty receptive to a choice as in if both interviews are that day? I'll be coming all the way from Baltimore so I would hope they would let me do that.

I think the only reason I did it on two different days was because I lived in Chattanooga, where the second interview could be. I think that wanted to accommodate all the OOS students and students that would need to drive a lot, so only chose the ones to do the different day interviews if it was easy on them.

Great. Thanks for that!

Just got an II! Two interviews, one in Memphis and one a few days later in my home city. Really excited, UTHSC is my top choice right now.

Though now starts the constant refreshing of my email in hopes of getting one tonight. Haha

Complete Aug 27, submitted my primary in early July. Completely caught me off guard getting an II on a Sunday night, guess someone in admissions is burning the midnight oil.

Is your interview next week?

Week after next. More notice would've been nice but it's hard to complain too much about an II.

Got my invite as well! Sunday night at 8pm... how odd.

IS LizzyM 75
Complete 8/26
Interviews on the 12th in Memphis

Got mine too! I'm interviewing oct 5 (1week!!) in Memphis then the 8th in my town. So scrambling to shuffle my schedule around so I can go, but excited none the less! Congrats to talk who got an interview and keep being patient to those waiting to hear!

II on my end as well! Complete 08/25. Who else will be in on the 13th?

Do they send II's to re-apps and military/non-trads first?

Everyone with this first batch of IIs..... care to share your stats?

I am OOS but applied for IS for tuition/fees purposes. Does anyone know if this results in being considered IS for application purposes as well? Did anyone else on here do that application?

MCAT (new): 517 (96%)
cGPA: 3.78
sGPA: 3.82 (but I'm post-bacc, so my post grad gpas for both are 4.0)

Lots of med exposure, volunteering, shadowing, research, etc.

There's PLENTY of time to receive a II though, it's still so early in the season!

Has anyone received a rejection letter yet? And if so about how long did it take to come?

Hey guys, current M1 here. I may not be able to answer all your questions, but I'm definitely willing to give it a shot! Congrats on those that just received II's! UTHSC is amazing!

I'll start with the curious generalities... What led you to choose UTHSC? How do you perceive the camaraderie between the students in your class? And would you say the faculty is involved and supportive?

I'm gonna tag with AspiringDoc on this board too. UTHSC has one of the best clinical experiences in the country and I'm not just saying that. We have no other medical school competition in Memphis , which means we are spread out through several hospitals such as St. Jude and have clinical rotations in Knoxville and Chattanooga also ( you can choose to do your whole 3rd year in knoxville, memphis or chattanooga). The list of opportunities in the area are endless for medical students and the great clinical exposure is one of the best. The volume of cases (especially for trauma) are great for your medical training.

I would say that our class is very well knit together already and I was surprised of how close we all know each other in a couple of months. Activities are consistently happening every weekend and we get flooded with like 5 emails per day on volunteer groups and interest groups to do on the side. A major difference with the faculty compared to other medical schools is that the professors are paid to teach and get incentives to teach. So not only are they very very supportive, but they want to make sure that you are learning the material. I believe when you interview, you will see how awesome the faculty is to students.

Last question for all the current students out there, roughly how many in each class are at least a year out from college?

From my experience so far, it's been very hit or miss from meeting people. I've met a lot of people that have been a year out of college. If I was to estimate based upon who I've talked to....maybe 40%?

What kind of student-led clinics are available to volunteer at at UTHSC?

What kind of opportunities for clinical rotations are at St. Jude? The website mentions Methodist, La Bonheur, Regional One, and the VA, but I can't find as much for St. Jude.

There are a couple of student led clinics with one being spanish speaking (but really fun to volunteer as you have full reign). There are too many other volunteer things going on that it would be really hard to list them all. Like I said, we get emails upon emails per day on things to do around here.

St. Jude, I'm not too sure as I'm just a 1st year and I have no interest in peds. From what I was told by others it was a choice to do research and rotations, but obviously limited and hard to get into.

How many days after you sent in your secondary are you supposed to get a complete email? I sent mine in like friday last week and still no reply.

They took a week for mine. My form had to be mailed from Maryland. So not sure how much time that added.

I received confirmation that I was complete was 5 days after I submitted, but I also did it the morning after they sent them--and I got one in the first batch, so they might have had less of a volume by then--now i suspect it may take a little longer?

I received a complete email the next day, but I emailed mine back to them, as per their instructions...

Hmm.. I live only 4 hours away so I'm kinda worried now. I think I might give them a call on Friday if I'm still not complete yet by then

Complete last Thursday, and nothing here yet either.
Also, I'm glad I found these forums  I've been flying solo for a couple months now on everything

I really wish I'd get an II from UTHSC so I can stop traveling/spending money/missing work for other schools
Right? I have my ETSU interview at the end of the month and really hope that UT will send me an interview to be close to that date. I have to drive from Maryland, so if I have to do that twice, it'll be rough.

Edit: and especially since I submitted my secondary the first day they went out.
