2015-2016 University of Texas - Southwestern Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Will applicants who do not attend the Friday sessions be disadvantaged in any way. Not sure if I can take two days off work, but I don't want to seem uninterested in the school if the interviewers ask me how was my experience on Friday.

Never attended the Friday session. Hopefully I'll be able to graduate this year before they discover my secret and kick me out.

Hi all, II (received it today, Saturday) scheduled 10/10! I was complete July 13th.

Dang, luck must've been in my favor on this one. Everyone's stats above blow mine away lol, so grateful for this chance!

Problem: The Oct. 17 date is currently available but the Rounds the day before are not and are only available for the 24th weekend. I really wanted to do the Rounds but I don't know if it would be more beneficial to skip it and have an earlier interview. Any thoughts?

From what I gather, earlier interviews don't really offer much of an advantage until late November. I would think any difference between Oct 17th and 24th would be negligible.

I don't think one week makes any difference, so if you are interested in doing the Friday program, just do it!

My interview date is Nov 7th. Do yall think its worth moving it up to Oct. 17th? Will there be an advantage for that?

I am in a similar situation. Any input would be highly appreciated. Thank you!

Hey everyone,
So I just spoke to one of my family friends who used to work as an interviewer for UT Southwestern a few years back and she told me that it makes no difference when you interview because UTSW adds up the interview scores and puts them into the system by the end of the day.
The system then picks the top scores and then the admission committee meets after a period of every SIX weeks (so Oct 17 and Nov 7 would be in the same set- the second one) to make a decision. However, the scores are not the only basis for the decision because the interviewer also has the right to pull a candidate back into the running if they feel the candidate was worthy but didn't make the cut.
Other tips she gave me: be relaxed, bold and clear with your answers, emphasize what is unique about you and the Friday session is more for you- you are not being evaluated for your attendance or interactions there.

Received an interview invite Saturday too! OOS with no real ties to Texas. Hope to see some of you interview day haha

I would suggest completing early enough to create a time gap before Nov 15th. No one knows the process clearly to say someone interviewing on 7th will be considered in the decisions on 15th.

Sorry for the newb question, but for the life of me I can't find a hard date written for the secondary deadline. Is it Oct 1? Or is that just for getting TMDSAS finished?

I agree, I can't find a hard date when I tried looking up the info for you. All other schools on TMDSAS have a listed secondary deadline, except UTSW. UTSW does list October 1st on their website as the application deadline with all supporting documents. I would call them to be safe, because you might just have today.

Which totally sucks since I'm gonna be like out of the house all day tomorrow. UGH. Guess I'll give them a call and see whats up.

It does just say "things into TMDSAS", and secondaries aren't handled by TMDSAS, but best to be safe and call.

Interviewees, don't forget to do your HIPAA course if you plan on going to the Friday rotations.
And good news, if you've done a HIPAA course in the past it will be way faster than half an hour.

Anybody else going next week?

I'll be at the Saturday interview program, but I can't make any of the Friday events unfortunately. Driving across the country with class doesn't leave me much wiggle room unfortunately.

Does anyone know if the texas schools still internally rank even with a pass/fail system? I'm speaking strictly in terms of the pre-clinical years.

UTSW does not internally rank for pre-clinical years under the new curriculum. Your class rank will be wholly determined by your clinical years.

I believe that Baylor internally ranks for preclinicals, although it's been a few years since I've done any reading on the grading system for other Texas schools. Not sure what the grading system is for other schools nowadays.

Baylor also said that they don't rank pre-clinical years. Only clinical years.

Does anyone know about the other TX schools?

Baylor students told me they ranked preclinically internally and it is a small part of AOA (10-20%). I don't believe it is part of the dean's letter though so for most students it probably won't make a difference. UTSW does not rank internally from what the students told me. They are new at P/F though so who knows what they will eventually settle on. I recently interviewed at UTSW and it was phenomenal. Their new TBL facility is crazy, I have never seen anything like that, I hope they use it to the fullest. They have two brand new hospitals and based on appearances no expense was spared. I could almost see the oil money sloshing down the hall in the new Parkland hospital. They also have the largest model train set in the United States in their children's hospital (I know most of us are probably going to make our attendance choice based on that haha). The students were cool and seemed to be very chill. They have dedicated studying space for every student in their class and it is with a group of 6 students who you will work with throughout med school. They also video-capture lectures and the students said that although there were some technical hiccoughs when it started a few years ago that they have it working really well now. It works so well in fact that by the end of preclinicals <20% of the class is still attending any given lecture in person. Parking is cheap and fairly easy at UTSW. As far as the interviews, one was open file and one was closed, both were conversational and they are 25 minutes long with no real possibility of going over as interviews are scheduled back to back.

Hey guys! I am flying from out of state for an interview here and wondering if you guys have any kind of recommendations on the hotels. The list of hotels the admissions office sent out is very long and I don't think I can sort through it. Thanks in advance!

Does anyone know if they accept pre interview updates?

Does anyone know if they accept pre interview updates?

Yes they accepted mine! They said they would "add it to my file" about a week after I sent the update

Awesome do you know what other Texas schools do too @KKT1992 ?

A&M, Lubbock, El Paso accept them too. Unsure about Galveston and San Antonio because i interviewed there by the time I sent my update. Houston and Austin do not.

Who do I email to get contact info for our interviewers? Trying to send a thank you note

Sending it to Dr. Interviewer, c/o Office of Admissions, [admissions office address] is fine for most schools.

@texaspremed1 I looked everywhere and could not find my interviewers contact info!
I typically send an email, but could not do that with UTSW faculty.

Anyone received an interview invite recently? Application processed by 8/18 and starting to worry...
