2015-2016 University of Texas - Southwestern Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think you will see plenty of what UTSW has to offer without going to Friday rounds. They'll take you on a couple of hospital tours on the regular interview day as well. I didn't do Friday rounds so I can't speak super knowledgeably but I felt like I had seen more than enough to know that UTSW was awesome with just the regular interview day. Additionally, I would say it is always a good call to interview as early as possible unless the school is totally non-rolling admissions.

That helps make my decision easier.
Thank you!!

Anyone know how long UTSW's review process is after the interview? Not sure if I should expect to hear on the 15th if I interviewed mid-Oct.

Wondering the same for early November interview

The admissions committee meets at intervals throughout the rest of the application season to "rank" applicants based on their entire file (app+interview). Those at the top will get offers first, and they will keep going down the list until all of their 200 seats are filled. Some students will choose to go elsewhere, opening up more seats, and then more offers will go out for those seats. In the end, I believe they will have sent out ~360 offers. So basically offers go out in a rolling fashion in chunks and your position on their ranking list will dictate if/when you get an acceptance. I don't think they will actively reject anyone. They just pick from the pool.

How frequent are those meetings?

Does anyone know for sure if they are sending out pre matches tonight ? Or do we have to wait until Monday ?

Hopefully tonight! I'm going to stay up until 12:15 am or so to check.

haha yeah me too... the suspense is torture... especially because i'm not sure it will actually happen tonight

Hey guys! Current MS1 here. Tonight is the first year anniversary (cheesy right?) of when I got accepted, and I can safely say it was the best moment of my life.

Good luck to all of you. For those who are accepted, congratulations. This school is an incredible place with people who will inspire and amaze you daily (and also sometimes make you question if they have an extra brain lobe). For those who are not accepted tonight, keep the faith and believe in yourself. If it's meant to be, you will end up coming here.

This school is tougher than I could have imagined, but I love it here, and I can't wait to welcome our new class!

P.S. I got my acceptance email at like 12:24 last year, so keep refreshing that web page furiously. Or like me, pushing down on your phone.

So if I did not get an email, should I assume no pre-match, or will they continue to send out emails over the next few weeks? Interviews early October, for what its worth.

Accepted! haha same here Avocat i was definitely not expecting to prematch after my interviews i thought i blew it completeeeelllyyy. So pumped. UTSW was my number 1 choice after seeing all the schools. I just can't believe I can be done with the whole process so early. What a relief 🙂 Worth every second of the wait.

Congrats on all the acceptances!

What do you guys think it means if one did not get accepted last night? When could I hear back?

I interviewed in mid-october, OOS LizzyM 75. I felt like my interviews went really well. One of my interviewers said she wanted to know what she could do to convince me to come to UTSW because she wanted to work with me. (Way to get my hopes up haha :scared:)

UTSW is my absolute top choice, It kills me to have to keep on waiting #fwp

it's so exciting to see some people received acceptances last night! what an awesome time, congrats to you all!

for those not so lucky, i just wanted to weigh in that utsw historically has taken many people off of the waitlist. i would estimate that 1/3 of my class was accepted that way - including some who are ranked at the very tip top of the class. even though it was four years ago, i certainly remember the agonizing feeling of waiting for so long for an answer... but i just don't want those who really want to come here but didn't receive an acceptance to lose hope yet.

edit: i also know at least one OOS person in my class who was for sure accepted off the waitlist

I am in the same boat. However, I had a quick question. What if you are hoping to go UTSW, but you got a prematch acceptance at another school? Can you accept it and wait for an acceptance from UTSW? Or do I have to decline the acceptance? Also, if I do accept it, would other schools know about my acceptance?

You can accept as many pre-matches as you like.

Interviewed in late October, OOS LizzyM ~72. Haven't receive any email 🙁

I absolutely love UTSW. I thought I did okay on interviews, but now that I think back...

p.s. Congratulations to those of you who got accepted!!!

Thanks for the quick reply! Are other schools aware of where you accept?
When I applied 4 years ago: Beginning sometime in April schools that had accepted an applicant were able to see where else that applicant had been accepted. Otherwise that information was not available to them. I would scour the AAMC website to see what the current policy is. Texas schools may have an additional way of communicating amongst each other because beginning sometime in June the they have a gentleman's agreement not to accept students who are already accepted at other Texas schools.

does UTSW have half days? If not, what does a typical school day look like?
The current preclinical schedule is available online: https://utsouthwestern.mrooms3.net/course/index.php?categoryid=103. Admittedly it is difficult to read, but yes in general there are 1-2 afternoons off per week for the first 6 months. For the next 12 months there should more afternoons off because there are fewer labs (labs like anatomy, histology, pathology were usually in the afternoon).

Does UTSW do second look?
Yes, there is an official second look offered to all accepted recruits - I remember it being earlier than second looks at most other schools, in February (although I didn't go). I don't know what the mechanism for unofficial second looks but I would bet if you reached out to admissions they would hook you up with something.

Hi all,

Does anyone know if class of 2020 have a Facebook page? I searched but nothing came up.

I'm oos and didn't get accepted. Should I assume I can't hear back until the match day or whatever in February now?

I, too, am curious about how this process will work for an OOS student.

I'm pretty positive that OOS applicants can hear at any time. It is my understanding that only instate residents participate in The match/prematch .I could be wrong on that though . I would think that yall aren't even on the same timeline as in state students. That being said, I'm sure that it will take longer to find out because you are dealing with like 20ish spots. I would just relax and be patient if this is your top choice you could be in for the long haul. I would imagine there is a good amount of turn over in those oos spots since those students have their own in state options. Who knows. But I don't think the next time you'll hear is match day

Yeah I know we don't participate in match, but I wasn't sure if they accepted people only during the prematch period for OOS since the spots for the match process are for IS students only. Like if I didn't hear back on the 15th or within the next few weeks are my chances slim to none?

I am OOS and was accepted on the 15th but I don't think they are done with OOS yet. Since they made us wait till 11-15 like the IS applicants I'd imagine we are eligible to be accepted on any day that acceptances are handed out for IS applicants. Additionally, UTSW's yield for OOS is high (maybe like 75%) but that still leaves about 10 spots to be filled from the wait-list. Some old USNEWS data said they accepted 38 for 28 spots but that probably includes most of their MD/PhD acceptances so isn't entirely accurate. Good luck though, I was blown away by UTSW on my interview day so I am very sympathetic to your concerns.
