2015-2016 University of Virginia Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
AAHHHHH accepted!!! Email just now!

Really? When did you interview? Early in the week? They told us there was a death in someone's family and the decisions for this past week wouldn't come out until Tuesday.

I was being a little facetious with the paranoid line (should have used a smiley, alas), but no worries.

Thanks for the input, all. Just wanted to make sure I hadn't missed a memo somewhere. I'll just sit tight and keep procrastinating my taxes/FAFSA.

Have you looked through the financial aid application process for UVA? The information about applying, as well as the timeline, can be found here: https://med.virginia.edu/financial-aid/application-process/

FWIW several months went by before I heard again from UVA after my acceptance. Things may have changed, but I don't recall getting an email from them regarding financial aid until they received my FAFSA in March.

I actually just got waitlisted about two seconds ago. Dying inside. I think this means I'm gonna have to reapply. 😢😢😢+pity++pissed+

I know every year is different, but at interview I met a very pleasant M1 who told me he was on six waitlists until May when UVA pulled him off. Make realistic plans, but don't give up hope quite yet.

Hey all! I'm an M3 stopping by to say hello again. I just celebrated my 3rd anniversary of my UVA acceptance this week and attending UVA SOM is the most challenging yet gratifying aspects of my life thus far.

We have six weeks left of Third Year and this week we are choosing our electives for Fourth Year. This is a major advantage for UVA students because we get several more months to confirm our specialty and really solidify our application by taking courses in our chosen field.

We're expecting 12-24" of snow in Charlottesville this weekend and much of UVA Health System is shutting down starting Friday. I'm on inpatient Internal Medicine this weekend, and it looks like many residents will be camping out at the hospital. I'll hopefully be studying for my Shelf at home, but Jonas might surprise us.

Congrats to those who've been accepted and best of luck to those still waiting! Please feel free to message me with any questions 🙂

Stay warm my fellow east coasters!

LizzyM 75. No updates. I pretty much gave up on the school and it was a really pleasant surprise.

Anyone going to Second Look Weekend?

When is second look?

Also, does anyone know more about the proof of BLS certification? There are a couple different options on the AHA website so I wasn't sure which course they wanted us to take.

2nd Look is April 1-3.

As for the BLS Certification, this is what I got back when I asked about it:

As long as you end up with an American Heart Association (AHA) card, you are fine. It must be AHA. You have to do the skills part of it, which cannot be on line (Part 1 can be)

Also, if you take Part 1 on line (for $22), you must take the skills part within 30 days. The general website is:

www.onlineaha.org<http://www.onlineaha.org>
Hope that helps!

+1 accepted! Found out earlier but had some fun celebrating! Congratulations to everyone else. I love the fact that they get back to you so quickly.

To people asking about merit aid: I learned at my interview that those decisions will be made sometime around March and we should definitely know before April 30! The admissions office actually gives out merit aid without help of the financial aid office so it's not like they know you or your parents incomes, either.

Congrats to everyone who got accepted.

I was wondering if anyone has gotten anything other than their acceptance letters yet? Like should something like a packet detailing what to do for financial aid, housing, etc be sent? I just kind of feel a bit unsecure with only an acceptance letter in hand without the other things because they are pretty important too and I feel like I should be filling them out now in case I have questions later.

If there is, what would be the expected sending date we would expect?

Thanks a bunch.

Accepted in October...
I haven't really gotten anything. I think I got an email about second look but that's about it.

It wouldn't make much sense to receive any of this before April 30th, maybe even some time after that. April 30 is the day accepted applicants all finalize down to one school. Sending these important materials out before then would be quite a waste for so many schools if their applicants end up deciding to attend other schools. Even UVA sends out 300 offers or so out of 650 interviews for a class size of 156. They'd probably rather send all that stuff for 156 people over 300 and be left over with a bunch of half completed forms for some people.

I don't know if UVA does this but one of the schools I was accepted at sent me housing information/applications before I even got back to them about accepting their offer.

So I see can see where @coolgeigei is coming from because it's not totally unheard of.

So how does the finalization process happen? Do we get a survey or something or is it kind of implicit like if we don't withdraw our placeholder thing we are committed to UVA SOM past April 30?

Basically my question is do I need to do anything more other than signing the contract for placeholder and sending it back, etc (and do the heart, background check, later) to finalize UVA SOM?

Well I'm an applicant just like you but from what I have read and understand all that we need to do is follow the terms of our offer packet which pretty much states notifying UVA about any course changes, any bad stuff we might do, and sending back our technical standards form and class reservation forms from the offer packet. Independently we should do the BLS certification thing from AHA on our own and the background check whenever it is sent to us. Of course, best course of action would be to contact admissions which I'll probably do if I don't hear anything for some time after April 30... for now I'm sure things are fine.

But yeah; after April 30 it just means that we will only be holding one acceptance to one medical school only [and then schools give out offers to their waitlist or other interviewees]. It just makes sense to me that after such point it would probably be a good time for us to receive a lot of that stuff.

Hey guys, interviewing next week here 🙂 This is by and away the best school I've got a II at so I'd really love to do well at the interview.

Any tips? Anyone know if it is open or closed file? I know there's a student and faculty. Any questions that you felt were really important / unexpected?

Also, I've done a lot since submitting my AMCAS and I would like to turn in an update. Should I send it in before I interview, given the short turnaround?

I just interviewed and loved it! It two open file (30 minute each) interviews with a faculty member and another faculty member or a 4th year. I personally had chill interviews and I felt like they honestly read my application and really wanted to just get to know me as a person. I don't have any specific advice about submitting an update. I'm sure you could just talk about it in your interview. Good luck!

I would definitely submit the update beforehand. If anything, it shows continued interest.

Personally, I'd wait until after the interview. They already like you enough to invite you, and you've already agreed to travel there so they know you're interested. Waiting until after the interview will allow you to incorporate your positive impressions of the school, thank them for the opportunity, and work in all your recent accomplishments. You'll have additional insight about the school culture and clinical opportunities and can make a more convincing case as to why you're a good fit, if you feel like going the combined interest/update route.

agreed. wait until after. It will absolutely not affect you pre interview whatsoever

Post-interview, it's all about if they think you would be a good fit. Save the update if you are put on a wait list where it will matter a lot. But better plan, remain calm, be yourself, and have fun. My UVa interview day was awesome, all my interviewers really wanted to get to know who I was and what my ambitions were, and both were super nice (it probably helped that I interviewed with a pediatrician and a student going into psychiatry)

I got my acceptance letter in the mail today! Quick question: by returning the "Acknowledgement of Acceptance Form" within two weeks, am I committing to attending Penn State? Because there is one more school I am about to hear back from, and I would hate to commit before I hear from them.

I sure hope not. You get accepted at UVA and they send you off to Penn State?! 😉 Jk but congrats!!

It looks like it's under construction. I searched for it like crazy (neuroticism seems to be a trait post pre-med life as well) and found 'UVA School of Medicine Class of 2020'.

Has an admin and an alumni page as members currently. Sent a request but I guess they might take some time to start adding to people

Does anyone know if there is a Facebook group for accepted students?

the alumni association/admissions run the facebook group (to ensure that only admitted students enter the group). they usually start adding students in february/march.

Found it! Seems like the right group. I hope they add us so we can start to meet some people!

similar to what someone said previously... don't panic. admissions offices try to be on top of things, especially UVA's. you're not going to get any official paperwork until after the AMCAS matriculation deadline - as previously stated, they're not going to send masses of paperwork out to students who may end up picking another school. you don't even need to worry about the BLS stuff, some students don't do it until the week before classes begin. the only thing you need to worry about is doing your taxes and getting the FAFSA out of the way when you have time to do that. if you got into UVA, just fill out the form they sent you and send it back - it's not binding.

RELAX. if you like UVA a lot, it's a very chill/relaxed/collaborative/fun place to go to medical school. and med school is a not exactly a walk in the park so please enjoy your current non-med school time if you have it 🙂

I think I will be attending UVA SOM next year! Pretty excited! For current students, where do most of the medical students live?

med students live in the vicinity of the hospital and medical school, almost everyone is within a 20 minute walk and most live on bus routes. the closer you live, the more expensive it is, so it depends on what you're looking for and who you want to live with. some students don't like living with other medical students, while some want to do that. if you're already really sure that UVA is where you're going, i would recommend looking for housing, as this can be one of the more time-consuming things to do. however, if you want med student roommates, it's better to wait until second look weekend so that you can meet people in person. or wait until the facebook group has a lot of people because upperclassmen sometimes need roommates and you can reach more of your own classmates that way.

Any recent IIs? I expect things are winding down for all schools now, but any recent good news?

Ashtree area, Brandon area and JPA are the biggest. Married/Fams tend to live farther away with people living down 29 or on the other side of 64. Keep in mind there's no free parking aside from JPA and its assortment of side streets. JPA is also by far the cheapest.

Has anyone heard anything about second look weekend? I know there is one at UVA but I have heard nothing.

Rejected 🙁 OOS

Am I the only one?
