2015-2016 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
VCU = very confused university = very cautious university = vaguely crawling university

Lol, I kid. I just think they need to switch over to a more efficient method of review (with the help of new admissions analytics software) given the ever increasing number of applications every year.
This sums up the admissions administration, they seem totally overwhelmed with over 9K of applications. While I enjoyed the actual interview day, and liked the academic medical center, the process was very disorganized. Because I have another option that I like better, I have withdrawn my application, and declined the acceptance. Good luck to all still in the mix.

:/ what chance do you think people have if they interviewed earlier but didn't get in the first wave?
Sigh

15 weeks and 6 days.........

Your M.D. file is now complete. The Sub-Committee will now do a review of your application. Once this review is complete, you will receive a status update regarding your profile.

and VCU still hasn't read my application.

Right there with you... coming up on 14 weeks for me, though. That's the first and only status I've gotten hah.

Finally an update after 4 long months...not an II but I suppose it's better than nothing.

II just now!! got the MAY status earlier this week and was pleasantly surprised to see an II when I logged into the portal tonight (I've been checking daily since I haven't been getting emails).

I know this process is soo long and so frustrating but keep your heads up everyone! You'll all end up somewhere amazing!

I didn't expect for it to take over 12 weeks to get a secondary. I still don't have it. This is sort of ridiculous

Although I have been accepted elsewhere, the fact that VCU has dragged me along for so long... I will stay in this game because this is one of my top choices

Rejected. OOS, like four days after the "sub committee" status. Apparently it didn't take long to ponder. Complete early August,

Can you share stats please and if you're is or oos?

Just received post interview hold! Sucks I gotta wait around a month now to "maybe" hear yes or no

+1 This is VCU's SOP, fingers crossed for the December acceptance date! We have to embrace the fun. Resistance is futile....

Do you guys think I have a chance of hearing back on the December acceptance date (if I'm fortunate enough to get accepted, that is) if I'm interviewing in a week? Based on the above comments, I'm thinking no 🙁

Yeah, I would be surprised if you didnt. 12/16 is a month away. They said at my interview that they were discussing my app the week after my interview

Same. But this means we definitely haven't been rejected post-II yet, right?
Thats correct, since our priority scores were below the rejection cut off we are now on hold until either we are accepted or wait listed.

IIRC, applicants who aren't rejected post-interview are put on "hold" until one of VCU's acceptance dates (Oct 16, Dec 15, Feb 1, Mar 16). On those dates, you could be accepted, rejected, or kept on hold until the next date, rinse and repeat. At the end of March, if you still haven't received a final decision on any of those four dates, you are added to a formal alternate list (waitlist). My understanding of the process gets a little more fuzzy after that. I assume they accept people off the waitlist in a similar fashion to most other schools.

Edit: If I said something incorrectly, please feel free to correct me haha.
Yep, that's exactly how it works. The admissions office, like most schools, keeps a pretty tight lid on how exactly the waitlist works- but there is some kind of ranking process for everyone that accepts a spot on the waitlist. A pretty big proportion (I've heard up to ~50%) of each class is admitted from the waitlist.

So sorry to hear about how frustrating this admissions cycle has been...and I thought it was bad when I applied. Yikes. It sucks, and I definitely feel for you.

Do you know what day you were complete? I have been waiting since 10 August....

To add to that: There is a separate OOS and IS waitlist because they want to keep the class 1/2 OOS and half IS. There is more movement in the OOS waitlist

Just got "may" status. Love how the VCU emails keep you guessing until you check the portal...

i've heard that this school is known for looking beyond grades...how true is this? i'm not URM and my gpa is a 3.4 cumulative and 3.5 science but i went through some serious challenges. gotten only rejections so far which is starting to make me feel like my challenges don't matter, only the numbers do.

I interviewed about 3-4 weeks ago and still haven't been put on hold. Does that mean anything?

Dont think anyone can answer that. I'm imagining it as you get put on hold once you are bumped. Like you start out in the acceptance range, once enough people score above you, you are put on the waitlist and get a hold. So in my imaginary system, there aren't enough people with higher scores than your's so you are still in the acceptance/waitlist zone and you can't be given a solid status yet. Whereas I was bumped into the definitive waitlist bracket

This is 100% my speculation and I don't think anyone will be able to verify it

I guess the sub-committee wasn't sure how they felt about my app and decided to send it to another sub-committee to determine if it should undergo file review.

Makes sense.

+pissed+

Have you consulted the VCU subcommittee on public relations to see if you're allowed to make such a post referencing them on SDN? It's a multistep approval process. Infact, I started the process of getting approval for this message 5 months ago.

I was taken off hold 3 days (roughly a month after my interview) before I was accepted on October 16th.
