2015-2016 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Complete on 9/9 and I have not heard a word. No secondary or change in online status. Does anyone recommend applying to another school to take the spot of VCU? I can't imagine there being a lot of spots left by the time another 12 weeks goes by IF I ever receive a secondary.

And if you don't get a hold?

That i'm not as sure of. During the interview they made it seem like you'll either get a hold or a rejection once they decide

I interviewed on 10/21 and still have not got a hold. I called yesterday and the lady told me that it's because my interviewer hasn't presented my file to the committee yet. So no news is good news people!

I'm going on 15 weeks sans secondary.

Every time I call, I'm assured that I'm still in the running and that there will still be interviews available by the time I'm complete (assuming I send my secondary in ASAP). It's not like people are being granted interviews at a faster pace than they primary apps, anyway; many have waited 3-4 months for an II.

Post interview survey today - does this mean our app just got scored 1-5 or have the 4&5s been rejected by this point? (Interviewed on 11/2)

Nope; after survey you should either be rejected or placed on post interview hold. I interviewed 11/5 and was updated today although I was told during my interview that I should expect an update to post interview hold/rejection the following Monday or the Monday after. That didn't happen and I was updated today, so it may take longer than you expect.

Sorry-I think I'm misunderstanding these two statements. I interviewed this week and got the post-interview survey the day of my interview (my portal changed later that night). Is this how the post-interview process goes:
1. portal asks you to fill out the survey
2. committee reviews your file (next monday or monday after as they said at the interview day, but possibly later)
3. committee scores you
4. scores 1-3 get placed on hold until Dec. 15, some of those holds accepted on that day, rest of holds get pushed to February admit date and so on. Scores 4-5 are rejected.
I assumed everyone got the survey immediately after the interview, is that not the case? Sorry, I'm probably reading way too much into all of this!

Happy thanksgiving everyone!

Got a message saying "the committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further...we are unable to predict when or if we will be able to schedule you this year." Anyone else receive this message? Any idea if this is similar to a pre-interview hold? Really like this school and I'm concerned this isn't good news.

II!!
Lizzy 63, OOS, mcat 510, gpa 3.2. I was on hold for a month or so, so it is possible to get through!

Are the interviews just normal one on one interviews?

Is anyone's status still : "Your profile is currently being reviewed by the Sub-Committee. This review will determine whether or not your profile will be forwarded for File Review."
What's the difference between being reviewed by the sub committee vs file review?
I'm getting worried because I sent them a copy of my green card via email but never received a confirmation email from them. When I initially sent them an email, I received an error message back so I called them and sent to the email address that they gave me. This was back in August...
And on the online portal, it says that my file is complete...

Nope it took mine 3 weeks post interview!

Well happy thanksgiving folks, maybe VCU adcoms will give me something to thank them for after they eat a bit of turkey and decide to hurry up with reviewing folk's apps.

Are we interviewing for wait list spots of our interviews are scheduled for January? Seems pretty late...idk maybe I'm just naive and neurotic lol

No you're not. 40-50 % of my class was from waitlist. Therefore, even if you were interviewing for wait list, it wouldn't matter. Good luck!

Most people get the post interview survey eventually. Takes some people a few days over the weekend considering someone has to be there to update that stuff. I'm not sure if their scoring system is the same as interviews (people placed 1-3 are accepted/WL and 4/5 are rejected) but yeah you are correct.

Interview -> Survey -> Hold/Rejection -> Rejection/Accepted/WL after hold

From what was said at the interview, it seems that ~50 are accepted at each acceptance day. You are in no way disadvantaged by a late interview.

And this interview is 100% the most relaxed interview I've had. At other relaxing interviews I've been on, you still get asked a bunch of questions and you have to worry about your responses. Here, it was all conversational. It was great. Good luck!

Man.... if I am still complete since August 10, then it is obvious I have been forgotten....

I had so much hope this school

:arghh:

Who still hasn't been reviewed!!!???

Same here. But I was complete after you (August 18th). Hopefully, we'll hear back soon.

OOS. complete late aug. "May be unable to interview everyone at your priority score" about 1.5 months ago and II on wed... do not give up hope! haha

Anyone receive the "reviewed by a sub-committee" status and then have it switch back to just "file under review"? I got the sub-committee status change about two weeks ago and today it went back to the original "file under review" status. Wondering if that means I actually got reviewed and put back in the pile or..? Would love an II at this school!

Wait.... is this the "will be reviewed by a sub-committee" message? If so, then yes. You can multiple statuses that sound the same because it's moving from sub-committee to sub-committee. I did get statuses that sound the same couples times already.

can anyone who has attended an interview speak to availability of scholarships?

Yeah I think that might be the case. Well, time to just wait for another sub-committee to check out my app and hopefully it amounts to something more 🙂

Man, at least people here have gotten reviewed VCU still has yet to open my file!! 3.8 months on "COMPLETE."

I honestly feel that the adcom at VCU is giving me false hope, and I have been silently rejected.

I don't know if I should call them...

Considering that they only send secondaries to 1/3 people, it might be possible that you may not be getting one

That was my feeling as well (also submitted about 15 weeks ago) but after @mcatjelly and I called the office we were both told no negative action has been taken and that we simply just haven't been reviewed yet

^ Yep, I just called again and the woman said I'm still in the prescreen and will be in this stage until the end of December at the latest.

Same boat. Is this less promising or more promising than getting a MAY or FURTHER status?

FWIW I was complete in July and just received one of the four statuses a week or so ago, keep the faith friends!

It's not even at that point yet, lol. Like, they haven't scored it yet basically.
I don't know, did you get any of the following messages?
---
Application Statuses:

1) "The Committee's file review indicates that they are very interested in your candidacy. There is another increase in the applicant pool this year, but we are trying to get all candidates at your priority score interviewed as soon as possible. Please watch for an e-mail from us regarding a possible interview date."

2) "The committee's file review indicates that they are interested in your candidacy. However, due to the increase in the applicant pool this year, it is clear we MAY be unable to interview all the candidates at your priority score. If we do find that we are able to grant an interview you will be notified by e-mail."

3) "The committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further. We are now in the process of scheduling interviews and will continue to do so through February. Unfortunately, the committee indicates interest in far more candidates than we are able to interview. Since we are dependent on the Committee member's schedules for interview spaces, we are unable to predict when or if we will be able to schedule you this year. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken."

4) "The committee's file review indicates that they wish to consider your file over the next several weeks before making a decision about interview. Since they have some reservations about granting an interview, your file will be reviewed again by a small sub-committee before making a final decision. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken."

5) "REJECTED"

If you didn't get any of the above statuses, they haven't scored your app yet.

For anyone still waiting for a secondary, check your portal!!! I never got an email about a secondary invite, but it was there when I checked the portal.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE END OF DECEMBER?

If that's true that is absolutely absurd

What day are you interviewing? I got my II on Wednesday and will be there this week! 🙂
I was just there! I gotta say, I really liked this school.

To answer others' questions. I believe they said they are giving out 900 interviews? and they have 400 left. 400 for sure.

They also said that, for the last acceptance of the cycle, the person who gets in last, there's a large scholarship. Essentially, I think, they want you to know that they want to get needed money into EVERYONE's hands, not just the first interviewees. They emphasized that they put in a lot of energy to getting people scholarships, and average OOS indebtedness is around $150k? Which, granted, is a common but never encouraging number to us poor people who rely on loans completely, but the other thing they said is that ALL of their scholarships are need-based. Merit matters too, but need is ALWAYS considered. You don't need your parents' financials to file a FAFSA, but you do to file for scholarships.

The interview day itself was very chill. I really liked my whole interview group. All of us reported good, friendly interviews--although I do know at least one person from a different day who said she got in an argument with her VCU interviewer. She was accepted anyway. 🙂

One thing I really liked was that I felt that the student tour guides seemed very straightforward and down to earth. Nobody was freakishly enthusiastic or weirdly morose; they just seemed to be legitimately proud of their school. After hearing about the curriculum and seeing the facilities, I could see why.

Also, of the many wrap sandwiches I have had at interviews, this one was by far the tastiest.

And Richmond felt like a great place to be.

Financials will almost certainly dictate where I end up, but I can't help but be a little in love VCU right now. I hope everyone who really wants this school gets a shot!

EDIT: Oh, and they told us today that we would get our decisions on the mid-December date (it is so late and I am so tired. 15th?) So whoever was asking about that before, time to start panicking! or drinking, or whatever your thing is...

Did it take anyone who already interviewed more than one month to receive the post interview hold status? I am beginning to get worried....

I'm in the same boat. Interviewed on 10/21 and still haven't got any post-II hold like I was told. When I called, the lady at the admission office told me it's bc my interviewer hasn't presented my file to the committee yet?!!!
