2015-2016 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
More like
"we got your app, we might look at your app, OK, we will definitely look at it at some point, we're looking at it, we'll look at it some more at some point, we're looking at it, we're looking at it, we're looking at it, we might look at your app." And then all of a sudden you finally get a status, lol.

I was just quoting my own statuses 🙂

I really wanted to believe that it wouldn't take more than 12 weeks to get a secondary.

I WAS WRONG.

@Amyyy & @mehc012

It's very laid back and conversational. You'll have a few presentations- on the school, financial aid, the INOVA campus, etc. Tours are given by M2 students. The tour guides have absolutely nothing to do with the admissions process. Your interview (singular) will be with a faculty member or M4 on the adcom. They normally last 60-75 minutes. Again, they keep it very relaxed and conversational. The interview questions will be simple and straightforward. They'll ask about what you do for fun, clinical experience, research experience, blemishes on your application, etc. I wasn't asked about anything related to ethics or the ACA. If your interview is in the morning, you should be done around 1pm. Afternoon interviews normally finish up around 5-6pm, I believe.

Getting an II means that you've got the general qualifications they're looking for on paper. The interview is really just test of how well you handle sitting down with a total stranger and chatting for an hour-ish. Just be yourself and remember that all of the interviewers have well-trained BS detectors.

After your interview, you'll be ranked on a scale (I believe it's something like 1-5). The interviewee rankings are compared after the all of the interviews for that round of offers have completed, and then their decisions are sent out. You'll either be accepted, rejected, or placed on hold. If you're placed on hold, you'll be compared with the next round of interviewees and could potentially be offered a seat during the next set of decisions. After all of the initial admissions offers are sent out, all of the applicants that are "on hold" are reviewed again and either rejected or offered a spot on the alternate list.

I hope this answers some of your questions. Let me know if you have any more. Good luck!!
There was no financial aid presentation on my day... Or it was super rushed, by the previous speaker ran over

I really thought this post was going to be about you finally receiving a secondary 🙁

Edit: I'll be 12 weeks on Tuesday 🙁

We had the financial aid presentation, but the "shortened version". No one talked to us about the INOVA campus though, our M2 guides explained it after randomly bringing it up during the tour and realizing no one had mentioned it.

So for those that have not yet received secondary, are we just silently rejected?

When I called last Friday or whenever it was.. the lady said that "no negative action had been taken on my file" and that I was still sitting in the "applicants to be screened pool"

Ah I see. My mcat score wasn't released till late sept so this doesn't really apply to me, but i find it unfair how some people are way behind than others depending on the reviewer they're assigned to.

Seriously. I've heard of people receiving secondaries and IIs only two weeks after being verified or complete, yet I've been waiting over 12 weeks for my secondary. I don't mind waiting several months for an invitation to interview, but I find it very frustrating that it's taken so long just to SCREEN an application.

Finally got a status update after being complete since mid July.

How long after the interview will your portal remain on the post-interview survey status? I remember hearing that students would get some sort of information from admissions 10 days after interviewing but I could be misremembering or misunderstanding something here

They did say that and I'm past the point where they said I should have gotten a post-II status update. They said that basically it would only tell us if we were rejected post-II, so I'm going to hope the fact that it didn't update means we're safe

yeah, same here! interviewed over 3 weeks ago, so i was expecting my portal to update to something other than the survey status by now considering what they told us during our interview day. but oh, so the case is that if you have been rejected post-II, you should get that information before December 15th but other than that, you wont be hearing anything?

that does give us some hope!!!!

Can anyone give a rough timeline of how long it took to be reviewed after submitting your secondary?

I can't imagine why you wouldn't want to read 40+ pages to hazard a guess. 😱 Mileage may vary - I was reviewed within 2 weeks, others have waited over 6-8 weeks or more.

I am in the same boat as you two. Interviewed here about 2 weeks ago and no change.

Good luck trying to predict your own course based on the results...it's totally inconsistent. Yeah, some people hear back in a couple of weeks, but if you bank on that you'll go insane. It doesn't seem to predict the outcome, either...took me almost 4mo after submission to hear back, and then I got an II very quickly once they reviewed me.

I went from under review by the subcommittee back to subcommittee will review... Has that happened to anyone else?

yea! same thing happened to me. I think the status just changes when someone accesses your application, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Hopefully we'll hear good news soon!

So I know this question has probably been asked before, but is VCU responsive to ITA requests? I'd hate to have to take two flights to Virginia if I could consolidate the trip into one.

After an invite, not before.

I looked at some threads from the past and it does look like they send rejections a few days after the interview. So it's good news for us that we haven't heard back yet.

So I just logged onto this thread since I got a "status change email" to see what that might mean. What a cluster #$&%! I think I'll just go back to drinking my beer and pretend I never saw anything.

OOS, LizzyM 66, complete 8/13

Has anybody else had the issue of not receiving any emails? I never got an email for the secondary request, I just happened to log in and check. Never got an email about my app being reviewed...though I just logged on it and it looks like I have one the post review statuses that everyone's been talking about. Anyone else having this problem and know what I should do about it? (I've checked my spam so I don't think they're going there)

Welcome to the club! I never got any email communications from VCU, even when I was granted an II. So check your VCU portal regularly folks!

+1

Has anyone heard back post-interview on the Committee vote about their app? I interviewed 11/2, and they made it sound like our app would be reviewed the very next Monday - but my status page is still on the "Congrats you have an II" stuff. Has anyone's status portal changed? Anyone gotten a ranking # or been rejected??

I interviewed three weeks ago with only the post interview survey status change still. There are others who interviewed around that time without update as well. They have rejected post interview very quickly before, so it's probably a good sign you have no news yet.

Your M.D. file is now complete. The Sub-Committee will now do a review of your application. Once this review is complete, you will receive a status update regarding your profile.

and VCU still hasn't read my application.

Just got the same update last night as well :oldman:

VCU = very confused university = very cautious university = vaguely crawling university

Lol, I kid. I just think they need to switch over to a more efficient method of review (with the help of new admissions analytics software) given the ever increasing number of applications every year.
