2016-2017 East Carolina University (Brody) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
+1 anyone know?
Judging by last year's thread, it looks like they accepted 10 applicants between 12/15 and 1/15. However, nobody posted during the second half of December, so I'd say they continue their deliberation in January.

I interviewed in late November and they told us the earliest we would go before the committee was January.

I'd actually argue that they are most likely on break from meeting until after the new year. So don't expect much until mid-January

Some info from stalking last year's thread that we can keep in mind:

IIs went out on 1/5 and 1/6.
Post-II acceptance on 1/8.
Post-II rejection on 1/15.

II today at 5pm! Been on hold until I sent in my fall grades.

Are all applicants required to submit fall grades?

Not unless the specifically tell you. I was complete first week of August but they told me they would wait on an interview decision based on my fall grades.

Brody is all about the mission of eastern NC. they want to churn out primary care physicians. if your application does not appear to fit the "mission of the school" then your chances are not as good

Do you think an applicant's chances would be reduced if they we interested in primary care, but in the western part of the state?

Nah, they are looking for people who are interested in serving all across the state. I explicitly said in my interviews I was interested in practicing in the western part of the state, and I was accepted. I wouldn't worry. 🙂

I am certain that I do not want to be in primary care. Should I BS in my upcoming interview, or just emphasize that I'm undecided on what specialty I wish to pursue (which is true) and just hope they don't question more than that
I wouldn't BS. More than half their class doesn't go into primary care. They know not everyone is going to be a primary care doc in rural NC! I have a friend who is a first year there and he told his interviewer he wants to specialize for sure. My interviewer told me that even though primary care is the mission of the school, they know interests change and it's nbd.

How do y'all feel about sending in fall grades if they're just going to drop your GPA? I want to send an update letter that includes a recent publication and work experience but I don't know if I should attach an updated transcript...

I agree with the rest of this thread. Usually interviewers can tell when someone is BSing, so I'd just tell them the truth: you're open to just about anything.

Has anyone been accepted recently? If so, what day did you interview?

Well, they updated their website yesterday saying as of January 18th they've made 63 offers. All I know is...it wasn't me! lol 🤣

So here's to another Friday of obsessively checking email and stalking this thread!:xf:

FWIW, current student here. I interviewed early fall and had complete radio silence for over 6 months before finally getting a waitlist on a Friday in late spring. Accepted off the waitlist the following Monday, 3 days later. Go figure.

Brody does things at its own pace, don't read into it to much and try not to let it get in your head, especially with the admissions update numbers. It will do you no good.

Sorry to butt in (not an applicant, well not yet anyways!), but what is ECU's attitude towards students who are NC residents but left the state to go to college in another state and/or spent a year outside of the state for their gap year? I have heard that ECU tends to look down upon such applicants and very few are accepted (though I'm sure part of that is because very few applicants are in such a position in the first place).

Obviously, any such applicant to Brody or UNC has to convince admissions that they plan on coming back to the state permanently and serving the needs of the state in the future.

Not sure what anyone else has experienced, but I'm a life-long NC resident who went to undergrad out of state and interviewed at Brody. 2 others in my interview group were NC residents who went to undergrad out of state too! They seem to care more about where your intentions lie as far as practicing in NC after graduation. The mission of Brody is to educate primary care physicians to serve the people in the Eastern part of the state, so while it's not a requirement to want to practice in NC, having ties to NC does line up with their mission.

Hi sumfreshaer. It definitely will be terrific to send in an update with a publication and work experience! I doubt your GPA going down a little will kill your application. (Granted, I'm not an adcom member, so what do I know).

Best wishes! Fingers crossed we'll be classmates in the fall! :xf:🙂

To add to this, I only had state residency for one year before applying/being accepted. It's not a black and white policy, more of a guiding principle really from what I've seen.

It looks like last year Brody did 500 interviews, but this year even though they had about the same number of applications they did about 70 fewer interviews. I guess they just decided to weed out a little more for II's this year.

As of February 1, 2017 we have .....
  • Received 1008 AMCAS applications (final count)
  • Received 930 Supplementary applications (final count)
  • Interviewed 429 applicants (final count)
  • Made 72 offers
(Generally it takes 120-135 offers to fill a class)

This avi haunts me.

Hey y'all, just wondering- Have your application status portals been updated at all? Mine hasn't been updated since September and still says "We have scheduled your interview."

I seem to remember from last year's thread that there were updates along the way, but mine has been sitting on interview scheduled for three months now.

Well at least I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. Thanks!
