2016-2017 Temple University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I submitted on 7/1 and still don't have a check mark next to the fourth criteria for Supplemental Material and LORs. I assigned my LORs on AMCAS (they were all received) the day I submitted my secondary.
Exact same boat. I submitted last week and sent my letters two weeks ago still no check box :/

How should I be addressing the school in the secondary? I started with the full, lengthy name and then started referring to it as Temple. Frowned upon? Should I use LKSOM instead? Or just write the whole darn thing out every time...

For most school's I write it out the first time and then use the abbreviation. I highly doubt adcoms really give a **** as long as you don't put the wrong school's name.

Why are there upload links for LORs on the "Supplemental Items Listing"? I just sent mine through AMCAS

Can anymore tell me about the Crozer-Keystone Medical Center Campus ? I am interested in working with the elderly and this seems to be the only campus that even has a geriatrics program (even though it's a fellowship)... can anyone weigh in? Thanks!

Does anyone know if it is just optional whether or not we upload our SAT scores and we have to self-report? Or is self-reporting your scores also optional? Because it asks "Did you take any of the following standardized tests (select one)?" then you have to self report...thanks

I interpreted it as both being optional. I indicated that I took both, but I left the score report sections blank and didn't upload anything as I took both exams 7-8 years ago lol.

Really struggling with #1 and #3, and how to make them different, considering I want TUH campus. I am thinking I will focus more on Why Philadelphia for #3 and the specific programs offered within Katz SOM for #1...but I'm not sure if this is what they're looking for. I wish the third was still optional for Philly students!
That's exactly what I did for my application!

I used the first prompt to talk about some specific opportunities I want to take advantage of at Temple, and then the third prompt to discuss Philadelphia and my goals of being a physician for urban underserved populations.

Did you guys take "How do you plan on contributing to the Lewis Katz School of Medicine Community?" as a diversity essay?

I submitted my letters to LKSOM on 6/30, completed the secondary and turned it in on 7/6, yet checking the portal today it says my letters still haven't been sent. Should I be worried at this point, being rolling admissions and all?

Did anyone upload a screenshot of their unofficial ACT scores? I self-reported on the secondary but didn't upload a screenshot yet. I'm wondering if it is necessary.

I uploaded a photo of my official score. I doubt it's necessary.

For the 1st choice clinical campus prompt, one of my top reasons for staying in Philadelphia is because I don't want to get uprooted and have my daily living impact my performance. Do you guys think this is too shallow? I'm also interested in the nearby research facilities, but as far as clinical education goes, I feel that St. Luke's great faculty-student ratio cannot be beat. I'm not sure how I can give a good reason to get my clinical education in Philadelphia.

Anybody else in a similar situation?

What exactly do you mean by "get uprooted"? As in having to move to another campus after the first/second year? Because you should also be aware that if you stay in Philly you might be moving around quite a bit for your rotations (I'm not 100% sure this would be the case, but the Danville campus's site highlighted that their students do their rotations all in one place/system, which was one of the selling points that led me to choose that one). But if you're adamant about Philly and you're interested in the research facilities, then I think it would be good to talk about those. If you want, mention one or two other aspects of why you like the Philly campus specifically, maybe you really like urban medicine or want to stay involved in a certain EC pursuit there. Just trying to throw ideas out.

I don't know the actual setup of the clinical programs and if that entails moving away from the main campus that we do Year 1 at. I just used google maps to gauge the distance between LKSOM and the other clinical sites. I was under the impression that I would need to move out of Philly if I wanted to do my rotations at St. Luke's or Geisinger. That's what I mean by "uprooted." I don't want to have to get reacquainted with another location with a different "feel" because I'm the kind that likes stability, since med school is stressful. I mean realistically my primary reason is that I'd probably get started in research really early like during 1st year and don't want to interrupt my connections/research progress. Also chose Philly because the Temple Healthcare System seemed to emphasis cutting-edge technology and treatment options which goes hand-in-hand with my interests in academic medicine.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure choosing one of the non-Philly campuses requires that you resettle at them. Anyway, everything you just wrote about your interest in research/academic medicine seems fairly substantial for your reasons to stay in Philly. 🙂 If I were you I'd focus on that, and how remaining on the same campus will give you the stability you need to carry out your research project/focus well on your education.

Anyone else have advice? (like someone higher on the totem pole than me ・_・; )

Did anyone get a completion email? I submitted my secondary on 7/10, and all of my letters are in.

Did anybody send more than 3 LORs to Temple? I know on their website that they say they will consider 3 LORs and welcome other letters anytime during the application process, but the portal seems only say 3.

I sent 6

I anyone else having trouble being marked complete? I submitted on 7/10 and my letters were finally marked as received yesterday, but it still doesn't say I'm complete.

It probably takes time to process the letters.

I interpreted that as you completed your secondary July 5, not necessarily that your entire application was complete. Maybe we're both getting caught up in the wording, though.

Yes. Not sure about the exact date, but I was marked complete about 2 weeks after submitting.

Maybe I am just not looking hard enough but where do you see the status on the portal?

Maybe a dumb question, but are you guys including spaces in your character count? Some schools do and some don't, so I was wondering the consensus.

Nvm, I'm an idiot. It informs you only if you've gone over.

For me, it just shows the four boxes all checked off, which I assume means that we're complete. It doesn't actually show the date of completion on my portal. All that I can see is my secondary submission date.

hey all, had a quick question. Can someone explain the difference amongst the three different clinical sites. If you can direct me to some sites, that'd be great! thanks!

Really interested in the MA in Urban Bioethics here. Anyone else know more about it? I looked through their website and it looks like you apply after being admitted? What happens if you get placed at a different campus? Any current students a part of the program? Thanks.

I went to Temple for my undergrad, and did ethics research with the current director of the Bioethics program. PM me and I can send you his email, he's always happy to talk to prospective students. Temple's bioethics program is one of its kind in the country, and the environment that Temple is in is the best classroom you can ask for!

Temple gets a ton of applicants. How harsh are they in weeding out people who don't have a huge connection to the school or Philadelphia?

I interviewed here last year and I'm from California. On that day, I met a great amount of OOS applicants (a bunch were also from Cali, which I thought was hilarious lol) and others that were IS with no connection to Philly. I don't think it's something to be overly concerned about. Temple's great, I'm hoping for another chance this year. Best of luck!

Okay, that's nice to know. Sorry it didn't work out for ya last time, good luck to you this time!

Not at all. Temple likes diversity. Don't let your location stop you!

For the preference of campus, is a couple sentences enough? Don't really know how long I should talk about a "preference." I chose their main campus but stated I would be open to the other two as well. Hopefully that's not too huge of a cookie cutter answer

The Secondary Application says that you will not be reviewed until you COMPLETE all the pre-req courses? Is that right? I was planning on taking a bio class with a lab in the spring if need be for med schools, so should I not bother applying to Temple?

Ummm, I highly doubt that is the case. Most medical schools just require it to be in your planned future coursework (on AMCAS and on their secondary if they ask for it). I would give them a call, but I really really doubt it.

Keep getting a 'Server Error' message after trying to save my essays. Is this happening to anyone else?

I was verified over a week ago and still haven't gotten a secondary. Anyone else have this happen? Do they screen? Should I call/email?

Has anyone not received the secondary? Primary verified 6/27

I was verified on 6/30 & received a secondary like two days later. Did you check your spam folder/did you provide the correct email address on your AMCAS app?

If you've done both of those and still can't find your secondary, I would contact the Admissions Office.

Me! Verified 7/22, still no secondary over a week later. Your case is even more shocking than mine–verified in June, and you still don't have it? We should probably contact them.
