2016-2017 Texas A&M Health Science Center Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats!!! Yeah summer school& interviews don't go well, esp when you have to plan flights! But it's still exciting!

May I ask when you submitted and what dates you got offered(or were you only offered one for next wk? It seems odd that they notify you a week prior)

I think I submitted my primary somewhere between 6/7-6/9, submitted the secondary on 6/24, and was "under review" somewhere around 6/27 or 6/28. And yes, I just got scheduled for an interview a week from now rather than offered a few dates. I've heard they're usually fairly accommodating for flying in from out of state, so I may try to reschedule to the next interview date as it would save me a few hundred dollars!

Update: They are very accommodating and kind about rescheduling interviews! I was able to get mine changed to mid-August

Does anybody know how an II is determined to be at the Temple vs Bryan campus? Is there a difference?

I think I scoured previous threads and it's basically random. Depends on which campus ends up reading your app. I could be wrong though.

It is supposed to be random but I have seen Temple invites having to go to more than one location for an interview. Not sure if that happens if you get a II from Bryan.

What do you mean by having to go to more than one location for an interview?

In Temple they will do presentations for half a day. However, for the interviews, some people have both their interviews at Temple while others may be asked to do one at Temple and/or drive to Round Rock and a second location (I forgot the name) for those two interviews.

Will they be accommodating for coming from OOS?

Accommodating in what way? If you are going to an interview at Temple, you can call and talk to them and ask questions. Other than change the interview from Thursdays (they only have one day a week) they are quite responsive in listening to you.

For any OOS applicants who have received II, what were your stats and when were you transmitted?

does anyone know whether student hosts are offered for interviews and if so, how to find one? I'm scheduled for an interview at the temple campus in august.

...nevermind i found it. lol thanks for your help

For those that got the interview invite, did the "Under Review" statement in the secondary portal change to something else? And if it did, did you notice it b4 you got the email?

Nah. I got 2 emails. One saying congrats you got an II, and then another saying a new form came up on my portal. It still says "Under Review" but there was a new form under the "outstanding assignments."

I woke up to the email, but I had checked the portal as early as 6 hours before, but I think it all changes simultaneously.

transmitted 6/27 and no word from any texas schools. im IS with good stats tho? bad sign?

For the mixer, what should the attire be? Should we be decked out in interview gear that we'll wear the next day?

I would not do that whatsoever. It would be horrible if you got your interview gear dirty with Mexican food

Does it look bad if you get your own hotel and just do the interview day? so no mixer or staying w/ a student?

Many locals just show up for interview on interview day. The mixer, staying with a student etc are mainly for you to learn more about the school.

Does anyone know if TAMUHSC tends to favor Texas A&M Alumni?
I wouldn't say that they favor A&M students (although I would guess maybe 20-25% of my class are Aggies), but rather that A&M students are more familiar with the school's dedication to selfless service, and as a result, have participated in activities that align with this mission and are able to articulate those experiences well. There are significant portions of my class from UT, Baylor, etc., so applicants from other schools are not at a disadvantage, and I know plenty of A&M undergrads (currently attending other med schools) that didn't get any love from TAMHSC during interview season, so it goes both ways. My best advice is to familiarize yourself with the school's goals and values, and tailor you secondaries to highlight aspects of your application that really fit with with them.

This report from TAMU shows where medical and dental applicants ended up in 2014 (more recent stats not published yet). In 2014 there were 41 Aggies in the TAMUHSC class of 200 students. TAMU is one of the biggest public colleges in Texas so I'm not sure this indicates a bias. Other stats on this report too such as GPA and MCAT scores. http://opsa.tamu.edu/OPSA/media/library/Documents/PDFs/Med-2014-report.pdf

So for any of you who interviewed yesterday, any advice?

Congrats!! When were you complete? And stats if you don't mind (URM/ORM, IS/OOS, MCAT/GPA, etc)? Good luck!
Of course! Anything to help out-- I was complete 6/29, ORM, OOS, 514/4.0! Pretty unique EC's with a lot of leadership and health justice work.
