2016-2017 University Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Regicide. Or, more commonly, failure to meet the minimum course requirements.

I haven't received my secondary application yet either. I'm a Nevada resident, have met all of the course requirements, and am above the minimum cutoffs. Should I continue waiting for the secondary or call the admissions office? I'm concerned that there may be a problem which will prevent me from receiving a secondary.

You should be able to submit your secondary with FAP documentation.
I have the same exact question. I qualified for FAP but do not see it demonstrated on the portal or can see anywhere where it says that payment has been waived

We are meeting with the College Net folks this afternoon to make sure this problem is addressed. Sorry for any difficulty.

Is it too late to apply for this medical school? I submitted my application last night since I thought UNLV was available on AMCAS starting yesterda, but I saw that people are already yreceiving secondaries... I'm very worried now!

It did just barely start they are just fast in sending secondaries .

To what address should we send our official transcripts for courses taken after AMCAS submission?

The transcripts that have to be submitted by the secondary application due date, is that referring to the courses taken after AMCAS submissions? Or is it referring to all official transcripts?

A friend of mine recently called UNLVsom about this. My friend was told that later down the admissions process, you will be emailed/asked to send the transcripts and how you can send them. Right after AMCAS primary submission, there is no additional action you need to do.

Anyone OOS get a secondary yet? still waiting on mine and from an adjacent state

I did but I had to send an email to admissions to let them know that I met the IS requirements even though I'm OOS (and not adjacent OOS).

All I've gotten is the email saying they received my primary.
Same here. I just got a reply from an e-mail to the ad com and I was told that out of state applicants are reviewed by the committee before being sent a secondary.

I'm OOS from Utah currently living in Florida so I sent them an email and then I received the secondary.

So, let me just make sure I did this right. I went in to AMCAS and updated the application to include UNLV and paid the fee. It's officially been sent to UNLV right? Nothing else I'm missing here?

Secondly, I have quite a few updates since completing my AMCAS (which cannot be edited). Will an update letter be accepted for consideration along with my secondary?

Edit: I guess I should chill out a bit. My secondary came within about 2 minutes, so we're good! Still wondering about the updates though...

I know a few schools will interview OOS earlier (Michigan, for example) because the winter months make travel from farther away a nightmare. Rescheduling doesn't seem too fun either.

I'm assuming they're gonna gout out soonish if they start interview on the 13th and 14th. I've been checking my email religiously haha
Some schools only give you a small margin of time though if you're an in-state or local. :/ The online timeline suggests the 6th. I'm a local to Vegas.

I also wish the portal would tell us if our app was in review, review cmplete, or very interested like some other colleges, but this is their first year. Premed neurotocism at its finest

Does anyone know if there is a GPA/MCAT cutoff for secondaries for OOS applicants? Seems like some people got the secondary immediately and I'm just sitting over here waiting for one.

I'm from Vegas as well. I know that'd be nice. I actually only have one school that sends any kind of updates via portal and its said decision pending since August

Is it a DO or an MD? I've only applied MD this cycle to 10 schools and all of them have updates when I log in! 🙂

Are you an adjacent state? When did you submit? Maybe because of the volume they haven't been able to get to yours yet. I think it's still a 3.2/499+

Thanks for the reply. I'm from Utah and submitted Monday morning. I should have checked Saturday to see if UNLV was live on AMCAS. Live and learn.

That's a very long time. Did you not fulfill the prerequisite courses listed on their website
3 courses in biology: one with lab
1 course in behavioral science
1 course in biochem

I have all the prerequisites covered. One of my bio courses was cross listed as an engineering course though, maybe they didn't process it correctly. I'll email them to see if that's it. Thanks for the help.

That's the only reason why some people didn't get it so shoot them an email.

No, I asked them. They go through and the comittee reviews all OOS applications before sending them a secondary.

If you look earlier on this thread most people get it automatically as long as they meet the course requirements, gpa, mcat, or meet adjacency. There were two people from CA and UTwho got it after 1 minute of submission. It does take time if you aren't from an adjacent state and then may have primary relatives or some other times born in Nevada or other htings that wouldn't be evident??? Unless they've changed it now.

I emailed them earlier, made it clear that I was from an adjacent state and asked if I had any missing requirements and just got a response that they were still reviewing applications. So this is clearly not the case.

Interesting... I wonder why the earlier people received the secondaries after a couple of minutes then?

I got mine almost immediately after submitting my primary.
Yeah and I had a friend from a different adjacent state that got his late Monday morning and I submitted not too long after him on Sunday evening. Somewhat frustrating considering the inconsistency, especially with II's going out so soon. Completely understandable, though, as they have a lot to consider with it being their first go around. I suppose that this, like the rest of this process, just requires a lot of patience.

There must be a huge number of apps! Hope you get yours soon enough 🙂

When the school went live in AMCAS and began receiving applications, the data was transmitted to CollegeNET, a third party software vendor. CollegeNET has been programmed to automatically send secondaries based on what it identifies in certain data fields. That process has been good but not perfect. The admissions staff has been going through all applications manually to determine appropriate disposition, and this will take some time. I am not privy to every idiosyncrasy of the OOS screening process, but suffice to say that this is a public, mission-driven school, and the admissions office sees no virtue in collecting secondary fees from individuals who have no realistic chance of being accepted.

Love your straightforward answers to these questions!

I just got an email about the UNLV vs Nevada football game and all I saw was UNLV. I just had a heart attack

Submitted my secondary last night! hoping to hear back for a II soon! Would LOVE to go here 🙂

Out of curiosity, what does the "Priority Secondary Deadline" for 11/06/16 listed here mean? I'm confused as it lies after the projected earliest date to by extended an interview invitation. I appreciate your assistance to everyone in this thread!

Did you guys receive a confirmation email or anything about the payment/secondary submission?

Applicants who get their secondaries in by 11/06 are more likely to get interviewed earlier in the cycle. The admissions process will be paced such that interviewing early or late should not impact the ultimate outcome.
