2016-2017 University Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So, I submitted on AMCAS 10/29 and then received 2 of the same emails saying UNLV received my app on both 10/29 and 10/31. Wondering if this was an error? Also wondering if I should have received a secondary by now since I meet the requirements and am OSS adjacent...

Same thing has happened to me. Hoping to get the secondary back soon so I can submit by the priority deadline!

Will the in state preference of UNLV be similar to that of Reno? Cuz if it is, then there would be about only 10 spots for us OOS people meaning that I should immediately marry someone from Nevada to be considered in state.

Didn't you get into Davis your own state school lmao

I emailed them about receiving a secondary and got a very terse one-liner about how they are still going through primary applications. By terse I mean no greeting, no signature, simply one sentence. I think some people got lucky and were automatically sent one by UNLV's system but they've since fixed it. Either that or they have someone who can review an app in 2 minutes and make a decision. I may be overthinking it, but that is the impression I get from all of the above posts and my personal experience.

Lol, truly.

I think it's hard to not go to these presentations and read the accompanying material and think that the admissions is literally screaming at us "WE WANT YOU TO STAY HERE."

That's true. Guess they liked our residence 😉 we most certainly won't be going anywhere if we already live here lol

On the application form, if you click checklist after you confirm your II, it has the questions nested in there already too.
Oh awesome! Didn't even notice that haha. And definitely more relaxed than MMIs. Those are too stressful.

yep we're all going to do great 🙂 I'm glad they took into account our ties and dedication to the Vegas community. We're most likely to stay and help serve

Super stoked!!! THANK YOU UNLV

What's everyone's stats that got an II looking like?

Are they mostly going off of stats or IS vs OOS??

Almost the same as cantelope's. Close to 4.0, ~90th MCAT, UNLV student, and Vegas resident for 20 years. Also nontraditional.

Whelp. Looks like the IS-bias is going to be strong.
Amen to that.. :yeahright:

I hope it works out for you, guys. I'm sure you both are very qualified. But, if you notice, the three of us are not just IS, we actually live in the city (I volunteer at the hospital adjacent to the proposed campus).

Like they said:

The UNLV School of Medicine's core mission is to increase the physician workforce in Nevada, and we felt the best candidates to fulfill that mission will be either local, regional, or have some other ties to the area.

Whelp. Looks like the IS-bias is going to be strong.

I mean, we knew that from the beginning since their biggest mission is to educate and retain physicians in Nevada, from Nevada.

Plus, from what people who have gotten IIs have posted about their stats, they're also more competitive. At least more than I am in any case with my 507 MCAT and 3.53 GPA.

So... I think the best thing to do is be patient and see how it plays out.

they are also going in order of geographic location but as is the case with many public schools, there is an IS bias and a mission-based fit. Interviews go until April.

Reading the admissions tea leaves: always tempting, rarely productive.

The first batch of interview offers has obviously been sent out, many more will follow. Please bear in mind that the first interview day is a mere nine days from now, and it was considered prudent to focus on individuals whose travel plans involve a drive across town rather than a flight across country.

Cali res, happy to drive over tonight and meet y'all tomorrow 😉😛

We're trying to be mindful of the time and expense of travel, and made the decision to interview applicants from Las Vegas for the first two dates due to the short turn around. We felt that was a reasonable way to start. We've reviewed the completed secondary applications from the majority of in state students and are working our way through out of state secondaries as I write. We're committed to reading each secondary application and being as fair as possible to all applicants, so please bear with us.

Woah, didn't mean to incite anything. Apologies.

Thank you, we all really appreciate it! It's incredible you guys are moving as fast as you are. Please disregard my anxiousness, just excited for this school 🙂

As far as secondaries go, I don't completely understand why UNLV doesn't let everyone access the secondary all at once. How is UNLV supposed to determine if an OOS resident should get a secondary or not right away? I have lots of family members still living in Las Vegas (I spent most of my childhood in this city), however my current residency is OOS and non-adjacent. The only metrics/algorithm to receive an automatic secondary should be if you have a GPA above their stated minimum and if you've taken all of the necessary pre-requisites (This could be easily done be simply stating it on their website/email, sending out a secondary to everyone, and having applicants decide if they qualify or not before they commit to paying the secondary fee).

If you feel that your connection to Nevada might be missed, drop an email to: [email protected] . We'll pull the primary information and check.
