2016-2017 University of Arizona - Tucson Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
After looking at last years thread, it doesn't appear that anyone gets off post-interview hold. I guess I'll call it unsubbed for this school and thank goodness I'm already accepted somewhere else.

I just quickly browsed onto last year's thread and there are definitely people that get accepted off the "post-interview hold" email (Ex: pg. 20 of 2015-2016 thread, "Green 113" interviewed 10/9/15 and was accepted 3/25/16)... Don't give up people, just b/c you aren't accepted this round there are still months ahead of us to get the acceptance email!

Do you mean the "not rejected" email?

Awesome thanks!

From talking with people who currently go to UA Tucson, a lot of the class is made up of people accepted after the hold. It's cool guys, it sucks now but you gotta keep the faith.

Does anyone that interviewed remember what they told us about the post-interview "not rejected, but not accepted" email? Are we on the waitlist or are they still reviewing us for each upcoming wave of acceptances?

Still reviewing us

You get reviewed each round, supposedly. Final decisions are in March, where you are told whether or not you are accepted if you haven't been told already. At that point, waitlists and rejections are sent out.

thanks guys appreciate the update that sounds right from what I remember they told us, does that mean they don't send out rejections until March? I was under the impression they still sent out rejections per acceptance wave.

As far as I remember, they implied that there were very few cases in which you would be rejected prior to March post Interview.

A lot of people in my class come from the post interview hold so don't give up. Also, this past year, they overfilled the class so I expect the adcom to be more conservative in acceptances.

ugh. Thanks for keeping us positive. Been through this process before so I'm biased towards what I think the outcome will be. Statistically the odds just aren't in our favor for us holds but I'll still be frantically checking my email and neurotically posting in the thread every 2 weeks until March.

What do you mean by "statistically" odds aren't in our favor? I respectfully disagree. Post interview holds are exactly what they are, there's no sugar coating it, but there is no downplaying it either. I've been through this process before too (albeit as a late applicant) but at this point in the cycle, anything can happen and if one had received an interview than one has a chance at matriculating.

I remember reading from another thread to remember that outright acceptances aren't ALL of acceptances. Waitlist, holds, and stuff are a good amount of the acceptances and we are so CLOSE!

Stay strong guys - it's tough for me but we all gotta do it.

They said they were going to interview 500 applicants at my interview date. Current first year class size is 132 (more than they wanted) and according to the data sheet they handed out at the interview day, they accepted 197. <50% of acceptance post II. Based off MSAR data from 2015, they interviewed 636 with 117 matriculants that year. I embarrassingly still have the data sheet from 2015 which says they accepted 194 students that cycle. I think it's safe to assume they're going to accept around 190 or less this year since they don't want to over accept again which leaves us with less than a coin flip chance of acceptance post interview. Statistically that qualifies as "not in our favor".

Waitlist is different than post II hold but still interesting information so thank you for posting.
Oh cool didn't know that!

Also, it sucks that AZ residents have better odds at a lot of out of state schools over in state ones. Like a 38% here versus like 55% at Keck.

Thank you all so much! I'm still in disbelief. I feel I have to pinch myself every 2 minutes lol. It was my top choice school because of its Integrative Medicine initiative.

I interviewed 10/8. Were there any other acceptances from that date yet?

I interviewed in mid September and didn't get anything last round or this round. Apparently it happens but isn't something to necessarily worry about. No news is good news right?

For anyone that has received post-interview "on-hold" emails from Arizona, do you have a red exclamation or a green check-mark under the "File Under Review" status in your portal?

Got this lovely email on 10/21: "We welcome your continued interest in the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson. Your application has completed the primary screening phase for an interview invitation. Our medical school is currently unable to invite you to interview. However, we have determined that you are a competitive candidate and you will continue to be considered during this application cycle."

So I guess I'll be waiting in purgatory for a while.

Anyone get an II 2 months after getting placed on hold?

Not supposedly - your name and data remain in the queue for each round of invites. I regularly send out invites to those on Interview Hold.

Thank you for this reply! I had only heard from friends, which was I made that qualifying statement. I appreciate the clarification.
