2016-2017 University of California - San Francisco Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
In page 2 of this thread it says 500 II 270 acceptances. So I guess not that many more. I should have looked before asking sorry guys

Although that brings acceptance rate from 64% to 54% post II which is slightly disheartening

That was from 2 cycles ago, but according to usnews from last year it was closer to 65%ish?

Also, I believe the someone commented that they felt like ucsf was giving out more secondaries than usual, and that ucla was giving fewer secondaries than usual, but that's totally just based off of what things were looking like on the sdn threads. So i feel like the interview stage should stay the same.

What's confusing is ucsf website says 512 were interviewed last year, and 149 matriculating, but msar says 437 interviewed and 165 matriculating.

so do we think # of secondaries offered has stayed the same? (or increased?)
i was under the understanding that receiving a secondary was not that special, especially in comparison to prior years.

Not entirely sure how true that is, since I was under the impression that ppl were making these conclusions off of how many people were posting on sdn that they got secondaries compared to previous years - not sure if there is a more reliable source that has this data

Has anyone actually confirmed this with UCSF? Not sure if this is something they can share over the phone, but it's worth a shot.

I feel like most schools would accept 2X their entering class size just to be safe but I'm just speculating. I feel like I'd trust the MSAR the most but I'm not sure. Either way there seems to be a 50-60% chance of acceptance post II

That's what I thought too, that interviews would probably hold stable

Just got rejected. Complete 7/14. At least the wait is over. Good luck to everyone else still in the cycle.

Maybe it's selfish, but it does make me feel a little better than applicants more qualified than me were rejected. Though it seems only OOS applicants were rejected thus far (n = small number. more samples needed to confirm assertion)

man they looped back to mid-july, maybe I'm next

Maybe we were applicants who were more on the fence than those who were rejected later, but ideally it's a good sign for you. Though at the end of the day med school admissions feels like "Who's line is it anyways?" Everything is made up and the points don't matter.........

Also one of the many rejected this morning!
Complete early-mid July, LizzyM in high 70s, out of state.
Obviously a little disappointed, but also a tiny bit relieved not to have to pay for a flight to San Francisco!

Good luck to y'all!

Well this is odd...I thought the wave before this one was all people due in mid-late August. And yet they seemed to circle all the way back to July again. I was complete at the tail end of August; I hope I hear something either way shortly.

Rejected a few days ago, complete early Aug...ah well would've liked to go back to the West Coast one more time

I called the admissions office and they said they're trying to get through secondaries as fast as they can but they are a little behind. We'll probably hear back by December!

like admissions decisions?? or IIs?

I just got a secondary yesterday after being verified in late July. What a surprise!

I'm interested in the PRIME program, but how does that work? Are there two separate admissions committees, one for PRIME and one for the normal MD program? If I get rejected from PRIME does that mean I automatically get rejected from the MD Program?

congrats everyone who got IIs!

They are separate admissions committees but there is certainly communication between them.

Although PRIME will recruit for students throughout this entire process, your actual consideration for admission into the program begins after you've been admitted through the regular MD program. Thus, applying to PRIME does not impact your MD decision in any negative way. (Since I know it's a common question, applying to PRIME also does not provide any boost or offer some back door into the MD program either)

Thank you that was very helpful!

sorry if this has been asked, but can anyone comment on what to expect on the interview day?

Hi! I interviewed mid-October and this is how my interview went.

There's breakfast first thing in the morning, then you'll have a chat with Dean Wofsy. He was so awesome, and funny, and was a super warm and welcoming person. Then, we were given our folders and our schedule for the day. Then, we were brought down to a student lounge and met a few med students who took us to their classes. After that, we went to lunch with a few more med students. Afterwards, we did our tour of the campus (led by even more med students!). Then, it was the interviews. You'll have two interviews - one with a faculty, then another with either faculty, staff or a student. Your interviews might be all over the place too, so you might need to take a shuttle to get to your interviewer's office. The admissions staff will give you maps and times for the shuttles so you shouldn't have any issues with finding the places. You're also given the contact info of your interviewers so if you're running late (shuttle came late or something) you can contact them and let them know what's up. This happened to one person in my interview group and the interviewer was very understanding. Then after that, you're done for the day!

Tip: Just enjoy the day! I loved the vibe of my interview group and everyone was really chatty and friendly and outgoing so it def set the tone for the day. And all the students, staff and faculty you'll meet are very friendly and helpful! They really just want to get to know you and see who you are as a person, so just relax and be yourself!

Rejected just now. Complete 7/21, LizzyM ~75. Not at all surprised given my zero research experience. Had to try!

Secondary invite yesterday (Nov 14th)
Primary verified on July 12th; this process does not seem linear at all.

Anyway, for what it's worth: LizzyM: ~73, International Student, Non-trad

How many of you who received the secondary provided an optional update or expansion on your activities? I'm leaning towards leaving it blank because my AMCAS was very thorough and I don't really have much new to discuss in the last few months.

I left it blank and am regretting it for what it's worth.
If they had left the prompt more open I'd probably say something else but I feel like I'm on Shark Tank and at the point where it's time to stop talking.

My other thought is that if they sent me the secondary so late in the season they must have liked what I said in my AMCAS. No need to beat a dead horse.
