2016-2017 University of Vermont Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi guys, I'm an incoming MS1, accepted in the 2016 cycle but matriculating in 2017. I'm happy to answer any questions you guys might have, and good luck to everyone!

I'm sure the question everyone wants to know. What does being in the "pool that they may select applicants for an interview from" mean? Does it mean we are preferred or does it mean we have just not been rejected?

Thanks in advance.

Congrats on your acceptance! Would you mind giving us a few tips on the interview process? This will be my first interview and since it is MMI I am just a little more nervous than I would be for a traditional interview. I'm sure any insight you can give us would be very helpful!

Any current students or people who interviewed last year floating around? I would love to ask a few questions about the interview day. There isn't much helpful info on the site (or I just couldn't find it).

I can do my best!

do you remember how long the interview was? i know the email said it would end at 3:30 at the latest, but I am trying to book a plane ticket and i don't want to cut it too close.

I am a bit later than everyone here. MCAT scores got released on 8/9 (app was on hold until then).
LizzyM score of 74 (517 MCAT, 3.93 GPA), OOS

Vermont is one of my top choices. Love the idea of the small class size, curriculum, and being in a much more tranquil environment (living in Chicago currently)! Congratulations to everybody who has interviews. Found out that I have been "small-pooled," so will be waiting in solidarity with the rest of you. Wishing the best for all!

Are there any MS2 or MS3 that would be willing to answer a few questions for me via personal message? Thank you!

curious- is there any other status prior to being small pooled? i'm stuck at 6-8 weeks, for a couple of weeks. am i going to be the only one who never gets small pooled? 🙁 lol

6-8 weeks and it has been a couple of weeks. Don't let the process make you neurotic. Start worrying about it in October (if you are not pooled by then).

But no, it is 6-8, pool or no pool, ii or rejection (much later in the season, if the past is any indication).

so easy to fall into the trap, but you are right lol

Question for people that have been small pooled - do you receive an email regarding application updates? I just sent my secondary in and it said that it would take 6-8 weeks to process...should I continuously be checking the portal or will they send an email?

Yeah in the past they were saying 6-8 weeks for preliminary review. They must not have many secondaries completed yet. I'm trying to stay realistic about it though because I've seen everything from only 2000 applicants get in the pool to everybody does.
Did they send you an email telling you about the change in application status?

They didn't send me an email when I was small pooled. I just noticed it on the portal. I'm assuming there was an email when someone gets an II but I'd have to look through the previous pages of the thread to be sure

They do not send emails regarding status updates. The only time you'll hear from them is if you are invited for an interview.

does anyone know their multiple mcat policy? (i.e. highest, most recent, average) couldnt find any info on their website

you guys think its too late to apply here? Just found out about this school and I love it.

I submitted 8/3 and am still on the status that states "your supplemental app has been received..." Is this normal?

I'm in the pool, hopefully no one peed in it.

Interviewed today! I really loved this school. Beautiful setting, awesome students and faculty. Hope I get in!
Good to hear you had a wonderful visit! If you don't mind me asking, how was the MMI? Stressful and difficult?

Interview day was a really good time and pretty low on stress. Of course your heart starts pounding as you're about to go into that first MMI station, but overall, it's not something you can study for, and really you just have to go in and be you. I was really impressed by the facilities and people.

As for timing, they ended--like they said--by 3:30, and the airport is 5 min away with a security line that was about 5 minutes long. Good luck everyone!

Definitely not stressful! All of the interviewers were very nice and most stations were fairly conversational. The group activity was my favorite part of the day, it was quite fun!

I also walked out of the interview feeling quite impressed with the school as well as the city. I especially enjoyed the Church St. market area. It's a shame we've got to wait 7 weeks before getting any notice.

are you able to elaborate more on what the group activity was about or is that part of the nondisclosure agreement?

I haven't interviewed but there is an article in the UVM COM website about how they've done their MMIs in the past and said there that the group activity for that specific interview day was to put together a bunch of mr potato head toys! Lol So I guess it's going to be a very casual relaxed and fun group exercise and I'm excited to go through that.

How long did u guys wait from sending the supplemental to being small pooled?

my status on the portal says nothing about a small pool. it says "you are in a pool of applicants.....", do they narrow it down to a "smaller" pool later?

Great to hear you had a good time! Do you recommend staying there for a day after the interview? I've heard a lot of great things about the location and was wondering if it's worth spending an extra stay to explore. Thanks!

Edit: Also did anyone stay with a student host?

I have been to Burlington a bunch of times, so I didn't stick around too long. It's definitely a cool place though.

Pooled today after 12 ish days! Glad to see I've joined my fellow SDN brethren in this limbo

Pooled within the last couple of days, completed the app sometime around 8/17 - 8/20 - finally moving along!

Anyone else interviewing 9/14 and staying after the interview? I can't fly out until the next morning so I'm planning to do some exploring/pay a visit to a brewery or two if anyone would like to join! (I've also never gone to a restaurant/bar by myself so plz help)
