2016-2017 University of Vermont Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone from UVM/Burlington know any good places to eat/grab a beer at? I want to check out the city a little after my II (hopefully somewhere by the water)

Check out Vermont Pub and Brewery. It's right on College St, 2 minute walk from the lake and 2 minute walk from the kind of main "downtown" area with shops and bars and such. It's the oldest brewery in VT and they make some interesting stuff. Good food too.

If you want more of brewery setting, Zero Gravity and Switchback are awesome.

I think Cleveland has a medical school with similar a name
Not mad. Just a mixture of amazement, disappointment, and forehead slapping. Seems like this could have been avoided.

And more than similar. Off by simply one vowel. Phonetically indistinguishable depending on your accent and if English is not your native language, too. There are so many variations on medical school naming, yet they didn't even switch it up to be Larner Vermont, (ala Cornell), to really identify and distinguish itself, just as an example. It probably doesn't matter much, as Larner College of Medicine and Lerner College of Medicine will both ultimately be referred to in 'synecdoche' as "Larner" and "Lerner". So imho, short of yet another medical school being named "Leaner college of medicine", this is maximally confusing.
why are you mad?

It can be confusing, yeah. Funny that you mention that.

But it'll be all right.

Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine

vs

The Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine at The University of Vermont

ok. yeah for sure, I could see how this might get confusing lol

For those who interviewed before 9/23, I interviewed this past Saturday, and the admissions folks told us that some people from our interview day will hear 10/17, and the rest from our interview day will hear before thanksgiving. So it sounds like first admissions decisions release for you all on 10/17!

Any advice on preparing for their MMI?

Any advice on preparing for their MMI?

I interviewed 9/24 as well. I'm sure you have heard it before, but just be yourself. The MMI was very conversational and not stressful whatsoever.

Good luck to everyone who interviewed! Still waiting in the pool since late July/ early August ish.

OK what is the pool and how do I know if I'm in it.

Assuming a legitimate question, your portal will be updated with a message along the lines of you are within a pool of applicants to which an interview may be extended if you meet their most basic prescreening requirements.

Rut roh... Thanks for the information!

Early decision applicant. Interviewed 8/27. As of today officially waitlisted. Too many mixed emotions. Let the waiting and dwelling and worrying continue.

I got placed in the pool today.... thought it was good news, but then I read this thread about everyone being pooled. Can someone provide me with some glimmer of hope here?

Just got my wet suit for those chilly nights in the pool.😉

Is it pretty cold/snowing in November? As a Floridian, winter is 50F for me.
If 50 is cold to you--yes. It will likely be less than 50 in November (think 30s-40s, may high in the 50s). Snow is possible as soon as October-but not guaranteed.

So how are people preparing for the MMI style?
Personally, I don't really think you can. Just know your app, know why you want to go to the school, be ready to think on your feet. All MMIs are different. Just go in feeling confident with an open mind.

There are a few resources where you can go over potential questions online, if you haven't had one before. I didn't use them, but I know they've helped some people just get comfortable with the style.

MMIs are way better than traditional in my opinion. They're relaxed, fun, and interesting.

Sorry to hear that.... Waiting is literally the worst. Mind if I ask your stats?
3.9 GPA and pretty awful MCAT scores if I'm honest. But I have a pretty unique resume filled with the kind of stuff I would like to think is important to UVM, and letters from some very good people. Also, my dad is an alum. I think if my MCAT had been better I would have been accepted. I plan on retaking and putting in the motions to reapply next year in case I'm not pulled in off the waitlist, and also sending them lost of letters of interest in the meantime. Its by far my #1 choice. I Wont find anything out until late April at the very least though.

Damn. Med schools admissions is a warzone. I hope you get in later down the road

Don't. I was super worried about not having done any preparation but I honestly think that made my interviews here better. Just be yourself, their questions/scenarios are meant to help you do that!

Does UVM defer any ED applicants to regular pool, or is it accept or waitlist?
Also- I thought UVM pulled from the waitlist all year?

Hey everyone, I wasn't able to land a student host for my interview date. Anybody interviewing on 10/15 want to split a hotel/motel? Ideally I'd like to check in 10/14 evening and check out 10/16 morning since that's how my flights worked out.

Hey folks. I've been chilling in the pool - what's the story with this?

To add onto this, I'd also be willing to stay with someone who lives near the campus. Will provide cookies and/or beer.

Us pool folks are pretty much just on hold, it could mean we get an interview or it could mean we stay in the pool until spring when they reject our extremely pruney selves, either way I feel like by the time I get out of this pool I will be almost as good a swimmer as Michael Phelps 😉

I am still hoping for the interview option, don't give up hope! Congrats on the acceptance though!

I have had this status for over 10 weeks: "Your supplemental application has been received. Please note that it may take 6-8 weeks for all materials to be processed. You should continue to periodically check on the status of your file through the Online Applicant Center. We appreciate your patience!"

Any thoughts on whether I should contact them or just wait it out?

Same here!

If you look through last year's thread a bunch of people had the same thing. They eventually changed. I'd give it some time. The pool isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Im still looking for a place to stay for 10/15 interviews. PM me if you want to split something.

I'll be going out for a beer and mac & cheese at that restaurant mentioned earlier in the thread after the interview is over. Mac and cheese is pretty cool...

Sorry you're not having much luck on the boarding situation. Wish I could help you out. : (

If you're really strapped for cash, then...

http://www.sleepinginairports.net/usa/burlington.htm

so if it ever comes to that, try the Couches on the 2nd floor?

Yeah I was debating sleeping in the airport but I really wanted an ironing board
have you checked out the air bnbs in the area? Those are probably the cheapest options you'll get.
