2016-2017 Virginia Commonwealth University Application Thread

Has anyone here interviewed within the past few weeks (I interviewed first week of october) and still not hear anything post-interview?? My interview cohort was told by the dean we would be informed of decisions in time for the Oct 17 date, but I have yet to hear anything (no email or status update; last status update was post-interview one thanking us for interviewing and that the committee would be reviewing the application). Status in question is:
Your interview is now complete! The Committee will now do a review of your application. Once this review is complete, you will receive a status update regarding your profile.

I don't think it is a matter of not having gotten to review my interview group in time, because here's the thing: There have been multiple people in this thread that have stated they interviewed after me and still got the oct.17 update regarding acceptance/hold. I called VCU and this nice lady checked my file and said basically the same thing: no update/change yet, committee still reviewing, etc....

If they review applicants post-interview in order, shouldn't I have been either accepted, put on hold, or rejected by now? (since people that interviewed after me have already heard back). The lady on the phone was very nice and helpful, and even she had no answers either. She just kept telling me to keep an eye on the portal/email for updates. Anyone out there in the same boat as me? Would help to know that I at least am not alone in this dilemma. This is driving me crazy as VCU is my top choice 🙁
When was you're day? I interviewed Oct 5th.

I interviewed early last week so I'm still at that post-interview status but will update if I hear any update after next Monday. I remember them saying at my interview day that they have been able to get through most of their file reviews within 2 Mondays of the interview day but maybe they've fallen a bit behind??

That is probably what had happened. In that case, patience is a virtue I need to have with this. It's just hard with VCU being my top choice; the waiting game is making me quite restless!

Those of you with interviews/acceptances already, when were you complete? I was complete 7/18 and I haven't even been REVIEWED yet. I know a bunch of people seem to be in this boat, and that VCU gets a ton of applications, but other schools that get the same or more have already reviewed everyone. Super confused as to what order they seem to be reviewing applications in.

Im hoping this means that the VCU "timeline" will be jsut shifted a little compared most other schools we applied to...So instead of having most IIs sent out in Oct/Nov, maybe itll be Nov/Dec etc...since there are so many of us that have been complete since July/Aug that have yet to be reviewed

This was the same timeline as last year. Tons of people did not get reviewed until extremely late. Doubt the timeline has changed. This school gets nearly 10K+ applications.

Has anyone had luck getting a hold of admissions, that are waiting to be reviewed?
I have. I called. I was complete late July and have yet to be reviewed according to my portal status. The (very friendly) lady who answered the phone said my app had undergone some reviewing but nothing significant enough for a status change. So…at least my app wasn't lost or anything! Like everyone says, it's all about patience 😵

Just received the "file reviewed" status instead of waiting to be reviewed by sub-committee. Nice to know they've actually looked at my application, although it's a bummer to be basically placed on hold

Hello! I have a question for anyone who is in/who has interviewed for the fmstat program. I have an interview at VCU coming up in November and I'm starting to worry that I might be limiting myself by committing to a family med program. I do have an interest in it, but pretty much all the physicians I have talked to/interviewed at this point said that they all changed what they thought they wanted to specialize in once they got to med school. Has anyone else felt this way? Also, is acceptance to the program tied with acceptance to VCU, or can you still get into VCU without doing the program? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not in the fmstat program or applying to it (regular applicant) but have looked into the program in the past. I would call admissions or e-mail one of them and explain your concerns and reservations. I think something like that is best to be brought up and communicated NOT during your interview, as to not hurt your chances or take away from your time-to-shine on the big day in any way. So I would definitely reach out to someone well before your interview date. It definitely needs to be brought up at some point prior to matriculating though, as they have mentoring, projects, and internships geared towards the FM people throughout all 4 years of medical school. I would assume the school would prefer to allocate these resources to someone who has a concrete interest in FM residency.

As for if acceptance in to the school with fmstat interest on your app is contingent on being in the program, I don't know. I would assume expressing interest in to the program / family medicine helps your application. It also may or may not have played a part in them granting an interview and/or ultimately offering an acceptance. I am not an adcom though, so I honestly have no idea

Tread lightly though. It should be fairly obvious: expressing desire in to the fmstat program on your app, securing an interview, and then backing out of committing to the program looks REALLY BAD.

Anyone else with the 'interested' status trying not to obsessively check the portal for the mysterious interview tab? 😵 Seems like most people with the status have gotten IIs within 1-2 months?

I am.

My morning ritual consists of waking up, checking VCU portal, then doing whatever it is I need to do to get ready... 🙁

Same...I had one early II turn into a waitlist and now I'm just crossing my fingers that this turns into an II someday. Looking back through earlier posts in the thread, it seems like most who had the 'interested' status did get an II?! Obviously excited to have the interested status, but also getting tired of checking the portal lol

Also going on a month 😳
I've had my "very interested" status since early August... I called to ask about any update, but the admissions officer just said there hasn't been any significant update since that review... Honestly gave up on checking frequently in "anticipat[ion] of an e-mail regarding a possible interview date" lol.

My friend (not me, sadly) had the "very interested" status for over two months before being invited for an interview just last week. Don't give up!!

There will still be a lot of opportunities for you to explore family medicine at VCU even without participating at the Fmstat program. Acceptance is not tied to the program, so you can still be accepted to VCU without doing Fmstat. I would advise you go to the Fmstat interview prepared with lots of questions to see if you are a good fit. After the interview, you will have the opportunity to express continued interest for the program, or say that you no longer want to be considered.

Hi there! I recently received an II for the Fmstat program as well. In terms of the interview/admissions process for Fmstat candidates, does that mean your app is reviewed by a FM physician on AdCom (I think I read that somewhere), and would saying you're no longer interested in Fmstat have a bearing on your acceptance if you express interest/disinterest post-interview? I'm quite interested in FM, but feel similar to premed95, and don't want to limit myself!

Got an II a couple of days ago, without ever getting anything else other than the "subcommittee will review you app" status. for those of you guys waiting for an Interview, there should be a big batch given out in the near future. There are many days available in january and february.

Yes, your app will be reviewed by a family physician, but I don't remember if they are on the admissions committee for general admission to the MD class. But it wouldn't negatively affect your acceptance to VCU if you were no longer interested in fmSTAT post-interview. They just want to know so that they can offer spots to someone else. They were very clear at the interview that you should only pursue fmSTAT if you already have a strong conviction that family medicine is the only thing you want to do. I hope that helps!

Ok good to know! Just to clarify though, our application is reviewed by the regular MD AdCom as well - it's just also reviewed by a FM physician, right? I think I'm just being paranoid at this point 😕

+1

I have had the very interested status ever since the last week of July. Let's just say I only check the portal once a week instead of every day. +pissed+

Fmstat has their own admissions committee (composed of family medicine physicians and faculty). Fmstat admissions has zero contact with regular VCU admissions as the two admissions processes work entirely independent of one another.

Has anyone who has been complete since early August heard back yet? I am trying to call the Office of Admissions to see if they can give me a rough timeline of when to expect an update but every time I call I get the automated message.

I have been complete for three months now and have not been reviewed. I was thinking of calling...

Welp-went from "very interested" to rejected today.... This was the closest I had to an II FML

What is the number? I can't seem to find it.
I have been using this phone number: 804-828-9629. It's listed under "Office of the Associate Dean for Admissions
VCU School of Medicine" on their website!

I've been complete since 7/27 and have still yet to be reviewed. Still at the "your file is now complete and will be sent to subcommittee" status. I have been calling every 6 weeks and every time they just tell me that they have had 10,000 applications and that I will be reviewed eventually. It is definitely frustrating that people who were complete far after have already received decisions, but I don't really think there is much we can do.

Same exact issue. I've been complete since the second week of July. A rejection at this point would've been better than being strung along for 3 months.

Is there are particular reason VCU gets so many applicants? I applied because I liked their mission and curriculum, but I'm assuming there must be something else pretty impressive to interest so many people…

VCU SOM is one of the first secondaries I submitted and I'm sad that I haven't even heard a response from them yet. Can't imagine how long my other apps will take to be reviewed if I'm still waiting at 3 months here. Wishing for that first interview invite
