2016-2017 Wayne State University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congratulations!! Does this mean they're sending out acceptances still?! Did you just find out? When did you interview?

Sorry for all the questions, but congratulations for real 🙂

I mean I think they'll continue to interview and send acceptances into next year like most med schools! Yeah I just found out ha. Interviewed August 19th. Thanks! Good luck to you.

Will they send an email if you get an interview
Not always. A lot of people on here got an email, but I didnt. I saw other posting one night that they got II's and decided to check my portal, and I had one too.
You should check daily.

Yes! I also didn't get an email at all. I'd say to check your spam folders often too as well as your portals.

Wayne doesn't take update letters?

Has anyone sent a letter of intent post-interview?

Probably a little earlier lol... yupp I interviewed that afternoon! I haven't heard anything yet. I called the admissions office last week and they said we would hear mid-November

Nice thanks for calling!

About the letter of intent, maybe i have it wrong but I thought people only sent those towards the end of the cycle because they're supposed to be kind of binding? Idk though. And then letters of interest are usually if you've been waitlisted?

Still MR since July 29.... :/
IS, 3.96, 511
+1 MR since July 27. I submitted so many apps in July that are still under review and see others getting IIs when submitting at later dates. I'd love to be able to go back and tell myself there was no rush, LOL.

Congratulations to those accepted and interviewed! I'd like to ask a couple of questions about Wayne's curriculum. I'd be grateful if someone can answer them.
(1) According to its web page, Wayne still has traditional (subject based) curriculum and focus on lectures. Is it still true for this year?
(2) Is the lecture attendance mandatory?
(3) Are lecture and lecture notes available online for review/preview?
(4) Are there any new learning approach in the curriculum such as small group/team based/problem based hours?
Thanks.

You interviewed yesterday right? Did they not tell you when to expect a decision?
No, there was no discussion about the process or what to expect after the interview. I was really surprised

Can any of the people with II's and/or acceptances let us know what their stats are?

There are several changes coming for the incoming class.

1. You guys will have a systems based class. Our class is the last to have traditional curriculum. They are trying to incorporate more independent study too.

2. Unless it specifically says required (IHI, US training, mandatory lectures), you don't have to go. Every lecture is recorded in HD, and is usually available an hour after class ends. You can fast forward it or slow it down.

3. Yes. You get a hard black and white copy, and an electronic copy.

4. That is the direction they are heading.

Do you have any idea how often the adcom meets? My interview is in a couple days, so i was just wondering....

Unfortunately I don't. I interviewed 12/8, and was told I would know the results later that month (I believe 12/23). When a couple of days passed, I called them and asked about my situation. They told me they didn't review my packet, which would be reviewed the next month. I found out 1/27.

So it is entirely possibly they review your file the following month and inform you later than originally suggested...

Every school has internal rankings whether they advertise it or not. It may not always be individual rankings and instead be on a quartile system, etc., but they need some way to compare students for when they are applying to residency programs. As of now you can't honor in a class (only pass/fail with a percentage grade) but can honor overall over your first two years of coursework (the basic sciences) if you average a 92% in all coursework.

AdCom supposedly meets every month, but whether or not you hear back also depends on whether your interviewer comes to the meeting and presents your file. Otherwise you may be further delayed, but when they're only meeting once a month (unlike many schools that meet every other week) it seems unlikely that someone would miss that meeting.

Is there a FB page yet for accepted students? Would love to get in contact with you all

But, is it not true that for residency, your USMLE and clerkship exams and reference letters are what they look for and they weigh heavy on those rather than ur grades in med school?

at Wayne, we would get graded on by %, right?

How do you think the letter of recs are differentiated ? Class rank is important. I am unsure if the grades have an honor component or not.

Wayne has honors but apparently you need to honor the entire year for it to matter. Like if you miss honoring in one course, it wont show. Thats how my friends described it to me.

Yeah , that sounds stress inducing.

Why are we talking about residency already haha?! Let's get through M1 first 🙂 also, the students seemed pretty excited about the new honor-based system, I guess because barely anyone can honor, no one does, and no one is stressed about honoring? That's what I got from it!

Gunners gotta gun!!! Jk. I am excited about watching lectures in my underwear at 2X!!!

I just got the interview invite via e-mail. For each available date, does anyone know why the two sessions you can choose from are different in length? One of them is 3.5 hours long and the other is 5 hours long. Why is there such a difference? I assumed you'd be getting the same type of interview regardless of which session you choose. Maybe the interview doesn't take up that entire period of time? Sorry for the newbie questions, this is my first ever in-person medical school interview.

I was told from current students on my tour that you need a certain percentage (90%? 92%?) overall at the end of the year to honor the year. You can't honor individual classes anymore.

I'm pretty sure they both are the same length, about 4 hours, whether you do the morning or afternoon. I think one starts around 8 and the other at 11:30.

You'll get out around 3pm for the afternoon interview. Not sure why it says 4:30. They're the same length for both.

So the interview is really 3 hours long? I figured they'd be interviewing more than one applicant during that time.
