Waitlisted IS. Are IS and OOS waitlist treated the same or does one have a better chance at getting off than the other?

In years past, it's definitely IS. I don't think they have a "quota" of IS to reach, but they definitely want a healthy number of West Virginians in the class so they'll pull from the WL often.

That being said, with all of these OOS acceptances on day 1 it looks like this year is quite a bit different so take that with a grain of salt.

Good luck everyone on the WL and congrats to those accepted! It's the first year I can't guarantee that I'll meet you in August! Haha

It seems like they are wait listing more people than they are rejecting. Toying with people's emotions, WVU

Yeah, please start a Facebook group!

(My MS4 roommate is selling the house and I need somewhere to live next year...)

Waitlisted yesterday, OOS. Interviewed in September. Kind of surprised there are so many OOS acceptances, they made it sound like as an OOS applicant the best we can hope for this early is waitlist. A bit confused since I thought the interviews couldn't have gone better but at least the waitlist here is still very promising.

Rejected IS. Very confused. Interviews went great, etc, etc....
Sorry to hear that 🙁
I suggest you contact the admissions office and ask what went wrong. They usually tell you what led to their decision and it'll be something you can learn from.

I agree with this sentiment to contact admissions. They accept the majority of IS applicants so if I were in that position I would be trying to figure out any possible red flags.

Has anybody reached out to admissions to find out where you sit on the wait list?

Alright, hopefully it's not weird for an existing student to make the new class's Facebook group, but I made it and messaged those who asked.

How is that ouch? 50 people is ALOT to pull off of the waitlist..

True, but it's also one of the biggest waitlists of any school. We'll probably see 50 people waitlist just on SDN by the end of the month

It seems like they waitlist hundreds of OOS for around 50 acceptances or less. I am taking my WL as a rejection. Holding out very minimal hope for WVU.

You also have to consider how many people on the waitlist get acceptances to other schools and attend. My friend was OOS interviewed in December and WL then ultimately accepted in the spring and is a student there now. Not all hope is lost!

rejected, this one definitely stings, thought everything went really great on the interview day. Good luck to everyone else!!

Rejected just now :/

OOS, LizzyM 73. Thought my interviews went well. I really liked the school and city but both interviewers seemed curious as to why I wanted to move there from a big urban city when I had no ties to the state. Hurts, but life goes on. Good luck to everyone else!

why I wanted to move there from a big urban city when I had no ties to the state.

The problem is that there is a huge adjustment for people from big urban cities who come to Morgantown. None of my classmates (that I know of) from large cities plan on staying after 4th year. They really miss city life, and as soon as they finish school they move away. West Virginia has a huge problem attracting physicians willing to stay and work with the underserved population here.

Don't take the rejection personally. There are so many outstanding candidates that it comes down to things like this.

Does anyone know how the interview waitlist works? I would like an earlier date but not having much luck switching to earlier ones I can see are available

Call the admissions office ((304) 293 - 2059). They are really helpful and if there's an earlier available date that you'd like to interview on then they'll do their best to make that happen.

OOS, 3.97 GPA, Waitlisted..... Does WVU SOM even consider extracurriculars?
I know this is more of a rhetorical question, but I'll comment anyways. I would say they definitely consider extracurriculars, considering they are pretty much all we talked about in both of my interviews. I don't think they would waste their time if those things weren't to be considered.

Yeah it was both rhetorical and actually a question...When I asked for feedback it seemed they are more focused on the statistical aspects of the applicant.....even though I was above average in those fields it seemed they were looking for exceptional statistics. I guess such as life....

Don't be surprised by getting waitlisted. As many have said here, most OOS applicants get waitlisted initially. Having a high GPA doesn't necessarily grant you admission anywhere. Anectodally, I think MCAT is weighed more heavily since it somewhat controls for how rigorous your undergrad institution is. Even then, it's all about the interview. Stats just get you in the front door.

I'm also waitlisted though, so welcome to the club! Don't let this get you down 🙂

Honestly, thank you! I guess I just got pretty PO'ed when I first heard about it. But I appreciate the comment.

Did you call them for feedback? Can you do that. Thank you for the help.

Just got my decision from interviewing last friday: waitlisted. I'll take it, better than a rejection anyday. Oos btw

Can anybody comment on what kind of scholarship opportunities they have for out of staters? Especially if they are interested in rural medicine. Really like this school but not sure if it would be worth going over the state school I was already accepted to simply due to cost

When does WVU begin pulling from the waitlist typically? Towards the end of the cycle or constantly through out?

Would also like to know.
They said this year was different from the past. So that may be a good sign for a constant flow of pulling people off the list.
As in the past most people heard back in April (I think at least).
