2016-2017 West Virginia University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Really like this school but not sure if it would be worth going over the state school I was already accepted to simply due to cost

The rural scholarships vary from state loans that get repaid at $10,000 per year you work in rural primary care to full tuition. I think some people get scholarships to attract them to the school, but most of us start getting scholarships after we arrive. Some scholarships become available as previous recipients graduate, so some of us get scholarships that start in our 2nd or 3rd year. There are loan repayment programs available after graduation for almost any site in the state, and there are new rural residency programs in family medicine and pediatrics that you can be accepted to while still a medical student so you don't have to waste money on interview season or the match if you know that's what you're interested in.

We've had several sessions with a financial advisor specifically about rural scholarships and programs to encourage us to stay in the state, because of the significant need for healthcare in WV.

If money is a huge issue for you, you can always go to your state school and then come to WV for a rural residency program.

When does WVU begin pulling from the waitlist typically? Towards the end of the cycle or constantly through out?

In years past it's been in late April and May with a few trickles throughout February and March.

I have an interview on Jan 4, I am OOS. Do you think that this is really late and will significantly hurt my chance of getting in? Also, do you think it's possible to get an earlier date? Thanks!

I was wondering the same, I interview Nov. 30th OOS. It's awesome that so many OOS are getting in, but I can't help but think that it means OOS chances are getting lower...

Same, interview mid-January. Bummed because I was complete at the beginning of September and it's so far out. But it's my only II so far so I have to hold out hope

If you live close by or are comfortable with sudden travel plans. You can always call in and get asked to be put in on the interview waitlist. I had a December interview and ended up interviewing early. They usually tell you of an opening a week before. It did help that I already live in Morgantown of course

Checked portal this morning. Rejected post-II

EDIT: OOS, no strong ties to WV, II was within last 2 weeks. Can't say I expected much

Waitlisted OOS. 72 LizzyM. No ties.
They waitlisted me exactly two days after my interview -- I interviewed Monday and received an email this morning.
Honestly disheartened... I really love the school, made really good friends with my Medstay host and really hope they pull me off the waitlist 🙁

Do they still waitlist most of the OOS applicants for this year?

Accepted, OOS Lizzy M 64! Interviewed on Monday.. Got sent to Charleston Campus, which was my second choice =/

There will be plenty of time to switch during first and second year. Everyone at Charleston ends up loving it if you do go there. Congrats on the acceptance!!

hi everyone,

I have an interview coming up next week which i'm very excited about. Can anyone offer any tips or advice? Thank you!

rejected post interview, which was Nov 2, OOS 3.8 GPA so shocked I wasn't even waitlisted. Both of my interviews went great and it just doesn't make any sense!!! I really wish it was a mistake :sorry:
would anyone recommend if I should email my interviewers because even they told me I was a strong applicant. Did anyone who interviewed with me on the 2nd get accepted?

Ugh, man. That really sucks and must be incredibly unsettling. I hope you get in somewhere. I don't think it could hurt at all to e-mail the admissions office and/or your interviewers and ask if they could provide you with any advice on how to better your candidacy because this is something that you really are passionate about and you would love to improve in any way you can.

You may or may not get a reply, but there is absolutely ZERO chance they can frown upon that. That's just you trying to better yourself, and I think anyone would respect that. Just avoid accusatory language like "you said I was a strong applicant", and I think you're golden.

what was your MCAT score? this stuff is very strange. seems like things go great and we never get the answers as to why things don't go our way.

Keep in mind that what you thought was an amazing interview may have no actually been an amazing interview. It definitely could have been and something else could have been working against your favor, I just don't want people to think that WVU has an unfair or corrupt application process. Stats are definitely not the most important thing at WVU, it's more about ECs + if you fit what the school is looking for. Good luck at other schools!!

hi everyone,

WVU is big on serving the state so as far as you show ties to the region and interest in future service then you should be in an advantageous position.

appalachian region or wv specifically?

503-506 that's the only thing I could think of that would have brought me down but I'm there r applicants who got accepted wz similar scores oh well

WVU is a big fit school... Your interviews may have gone well but the committee as a whole did not think you were a good fit.. Im not sure what else it could be. know it sucks, I'm sorry 🙁 keep your head up!

If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them. MS1 in WVU Med currently.

Most of the students here do have WV ties or ties to the region. There are some individuals from distant locations of the country, in my class.
A couple of people from Utah, Florida, Wisconsin, the North East. Everyone else is from Appalachia.
It is possible to get in even if you don't have ties.

I was accepted with no ties to the area or region. My interview was the first time to the state. So I would just like to second that statement. Although I would say if you don't have ties you need to find a really good answer to "Why WVU?", which will probably be the first question asked.

Yes, this 100000%. The why WVU question is key. They're good at being able to tell who is applying to WVU as a backup because the average stats aren't as high as other schools vs. those who are really interested in what the school is trying to do and will be a good fit.

What is the interview structure like on interview day?

Greeted by dean, ppt presentation for like an hour. You get told who's interviewing you before heading out to lunch with current med students. You get a tour of HSC for another hour then interviews start at 1.

thanks for the reply. are the interviews more laid back or question after question? I noticed they are only 20 minutes, which are shorter than others

Depends on who interviews you/you as a person. One person interviewed with the same person I did, and said the interviewer was extremely serious and showed no emotion. I went in there and talked to him the whole time about something that came up within the first minute and he asked me maybe 2-3 questions the whole time... He did not seem "too serious" or "emotionless" at all, I thought he was great.

Is there a priority wait list? Could anybody share how their wait list email was worded?

So there are people who got in without wearing a tie? Do they not say something about that during the interview?

Anyone know the closest hotel to the medical school?

The Residence Inn and Euro Suites are very close. Hampton is pretty close, but you probably need to drive or get a shuttle.

Waitlisted today. OOS with very strong ties to the state. Bummed but figured it would happen. Any idea if there is waitlist movement before the spring?

Waitlisted as well today, expected it since I ran into a MS2 at the end of my interview and he said most if not all his OOS students in his class were put on WL. Really hoping to get in, have some strong ties to the school.

They seem to be doing things a little different this year, but in years past there was a little movement before spring with the majority of movement in late April/early May. Good luck everybody!

Interviewed at WVU today and loved it. Hospital, school and facilities are beautiful. Curriculum is preparative and research opportunities are very promising. Happy to answer any questions and the day and the interviews!
